What women (and men) want...in their fiction
GeorgeGlass replied to GeorgeGlass's topic in Personal Rants & Journals
Never one moment of fluff in your life? Surely that's impossible. You've probably had such moments while on this site. (Unless "fluff" has a more specific meaning than I think it does.) I think you're right on the money with that. It occurred to me the other day that almost every story I've written has involved some sort of taboo--incest, rape, prostitution, bestiality, or what have you. Breaking the rules of society is hot. I guess I'm not really trying to cater to a particular audience--the stuff I write is probably too varied for all of it to be to any given person's taste, anyway (other than mine, that is). I just find reader behavior extremely counterintuitive, especially when it comes to what men and women like. I sometimes wish I could connect with the audience a bit more. I have a few readers who regularly leave me reviews, and I write responses to them in the forums, but I have no idea whether they are reading those responses. But I do see your overall point. -
It's actually a real weapon called a chakram--a weapon made famous (for better or worse) by Xena: Warrior Princess. There was an episode of Deadliest Warrior on which a couple of experts threw chakrams at pig carcasses. I thought, "Yeah, like you're going to hurt anything with your killer Frisbee," but the chakrams sliced through the carcasses rather neatly.

What if an angel's "halo" were actually a circular throwing weapon ala Tron? Some of the Hindu gods have weapons like that.

Review responses for "Danville, We Have a Problem"

No spoilers. Perry may or may not save Ferb. You may or may not forgive me. As noted above, if Stacy doesn't get some in this story, she'll get a bunch in one of my upcoming ones. And Japanese girls must be awesome, because Japanese guys like them, and they like a lot of stuff that's cool. I think I used up all my Ferbnessa mojo in "Sweet Dreams." I kind of feel like I've already told the best story about them that I'm ever going to tell. In fact, after this, I think I really only have two P&F stories left in me: "Tri-Date Area," which will be about a 3-way relationship among Candace, Jeremy, and Stacy, and an as-yet untitled, rather dark rape-revenge fic involving Candace and little Suzy Johnson (whom I have long considered to be the most evil P&F character there is. Sorry, Doctor D). -

Glad you enjoyed the chapter, minus the implicit death threat. As for Stacy, if she doesn't get any in this story, she's going to get lots in my upcoming one, "Tri-Date Area." -
What women (and men) want...in their fiction

I don't understand that attitude. It sounds like those authors want to deceive readers into reading something they won't like. What's the point of that? If I put a bunch of kale in a casserole and don't tell the people I serve it to, I have only myself to blame if they spit it out and call me a lousy cook--or have a violent allergic reaction. I'm all for that. I'd rather readers be able to make an informed decision about what they read. Besides, I consider tags to be as much ads as warning labels. They're a way of saying, "If you're into [insert fetish here], you might like this story." Getting back to the subject of the thread, the tagging is part of what makes readers' selection patterns so interesting, because their choices are deliberate and informed. -
I'm so sorry. Like those ads on TV used to say, "A mind is a terrible thing." Or something like that.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. Most of what you all are saying jibes completely with what I initially expected when I first started posting stories--which makes the actual behavior of readers (as I have observed it, anyway) all the more puzzling. My plot-heaviest story is actually my least popular one by a wide margin in terms of hits and reviews, and the only reviewer thus far has been a man (or used a male name, anyway). Muhabba makes an interesting point about all the formerly taboo material that has is mainstream these days. Maybe the people who read that sort of thing are more representative of the internet-erotica readership in general. -
Horrible fic-title idea: "Skrullfucked."

What women (and men) want...in their fiction
GeorgeGlass posted a topic in Personal Rants & Journals
In the time that I've been posting (mostly erotic) fiction on various sites (AFF, Hentai Foundry, and Inkbunny), my experience with male and female readers has been, to me, extremely counterintuitive: --I've written several stories that, at the time I wrote them, I considered "woman-friendly." That is, the female characters have strong roles and are equal partners in sexual activity. Female readers never review these. --Of the first dozen stories I posted on AFF, the only one that any openly female reader (ie, a reader whose username or profile makes her gender obvious) has reviewed was one in which the female protagonist is repeatedly gang-raped. Her comment was "Very good fic." --Only male readers express dislike for my non-con stories. A male reader who reviewed one such story yesterday told me that it was well written but made him want to vomit. --In contrast, the only stories I've written on which women seem interested enough to comment (always positively) are stories that involve rape, incest, or both. Now, I generally don't talk to my female friends about their tastes in erotica, so my only RL source of info about what women want to read is my wife. So when I think "woman-friendly," I'm thinking "something that won't make my wife smash the computer screen and run away screaming." But then, I can't imagine my wife visiting AFF, so maybe she's not a good representative of what women who like erotic fiction enjoy. Anyway, I've blathered long enough. I'd love to hear what other AFF users--male and female--have to say on this subject. -
George Glass' Review Responses -- Original Fiction

Re: "Wild Side" Well, this story IS pretty much straight-up porn (although I tried to put a twist or two on it), so I think "guilty pleasure" is a highly appropriate assessment. One thing I learned while writing this story is that dialogue can sometimes be hotter than action. I kept finding myself, um, rereading the part where Daddy tells Angie what he's going to do when they go back home. Thanks for reviewing! -

In my ongoing quest to figure out what sort of stories AFF members like, I recently posted my original father-daughter incest story "Wild Side" here, and I'll soon post its sequel, "Everything She Needs." And, of course, I'll respond to reviews in this thread. -
There are lots of great ways to organize your thoughts, both on and off the computer. Here are a few that I've tried that have worked well for me: --Writing ideas down on scraps of paper or index cards so that I can lay them out later and move them around until I like the order they're in. --Using a smartphone app called Notebooks. I use it to write down ideas or pieces of dialogue or whatnot and then email them to myself so that, later, I can organize them on my computer. --Using a freeware program called Freemind. It's basically an outlining program that lets you type text into boxes, shuffle them around, put them in hierarchies, etc.

No, but I hope the readers were. No biggie. Balancing comedy, drama, and sex has been one of the great challenges of this story. I don't expect the mix to be perfect for everyone. But I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. The last line was not intended as a reference to GRAVITY (although I have now seen it and thought it was really good)--just as a bit of comedy at poor Stacy's expense. -

Thanks! I've started finding these sex scenes harder to write, because I've done enough stories with these same characters that I've become concerned about not just writing the same scene over and over again. So I'm glad if they're doing it for you. -

I have no plans to continue this particular story, but I will definitely post more furry stories here. -

I'm a little unclear on what your issue is. Is it that this chapter took me an unusually long time to write (I'd been going for about 1 a week, but this one took 10 days), or that the content of the chapter was not sufficiently gratifying? If it's the first issue, the main reason I got a bit slow with this chapter was that I kept writing bits that I realized were more appropriate for subsequent chapters. Hopefully, this means that the NEXT chapter will come sooner. If it's the second issue, well, Phineas DID get blown to completion in this chapter, so that's something. (I even got auto-chastised for not putting "oral" in the list of tags. I fixed that just now.) Anyhow, more excitement to come in the next chapter. -
I knew a mom who actually forbade her kids from watching Spongebob for fear that it induces stupidity. I like Phineas and Ferb because the creators are from my generation and throw in a lot of in-jokes about the 80s (and other stuff that kids aren't likely to get).

What people here generally do is create a review response thread in the appropriate "Fan Fiction" forum (ie, whichever forum fits the category your story is in). You can then insert a link to your thread into the text of the story, or put it in a "review" of your own story.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you/get bent. Next chapter should go up at the end of the week. -
BTW, you inspired me to post one of my furry stories here on AFF: "Firelight," about a cow who visits a stud service.

Thanks! I've been managing about a chapter a week so far; I expect the writing will continue at that pace.
