Different penames for different stories.

Has the benefit that there’s unlikely to be someone else with the same name think it’s theirs!

My RL first name is sufficiently common that I can relate!  (More technically, my legal first name is the common “short”, so people assume it’s the long version, an assumption that is true 85% of the time, but I’m in that 15% minority where it’s wrong.  And that 15% includes it being a short version for other common names too.)

I dunno, I feel like the entire neighbourhood can claim the coffee is theirs with reasonable doubt.  My name in real life is hard to spell and been said to be painful to pronounce, so that won’t do.  I had another name for regular diet off brand FanFiction.net but have since forgotten what it was since I never used it.  I’ll likely have a more real sounding pen name by the time I become a real published author [weeps in dark corner].  For this sight, I was logging in a guest at the time and happened to be playing Rome Total War 2 in the background at the time and chose a Roman title at random.  I just kind of stuck with it.

I grabbed Sinfulwolf way back when I was 18 to join some kind of porn forum, and kinda stuck with it since (30 now). I always get annoyed when I get to a website and find out there’s already a Sinfulwolf there… that’s my internet wide Username! In those cases I go with TheSinfulwolf. :P

If I wanted to maximize my readership, and if AFF allowed it, I would probably have multiple user names that I would use as “brands” for different types of stories – fanfics, Minor1 stuff, offbeat adult originals, etc. I think readers like it when they can count on authors to be consistent about the subject matter, sort of the way they can count on getting something foamy and vanilla-flavored at any Starbucks. Conversely, I’m certain there are readers who loved a couple of my stories and then never read my stuff again after seeing some completely different kind of story that I posted – not just fans of my Frozen fanfic who then ran screaming from a Minor1 story but also the other way around.

I was thinking about that.  I feel like I typecasted myself and the good name of Praetor is now well associated with hyper proportioned harem fics of varying quality, and possibly old men in togas.  It just feels weird writing anything else now and when I work on Overwatch one shots and bleaker projects like Mad Love, I almost feel like I am betraying my core constituents.  But it’d be too much work to invent a whole new personality and brand name for the internet, again.

Whenever I got an email – or review somwhere you could direct reply to reviews – on one of my much less extreme stories eg Just a Cat with a “I liked this story, and will read more of your stories!” review, I’d always panic a little and respond to be really careful with the codes because going from cheerful consensual oral/anal to flaying or shit eating or twincest (I guess my first twincest was probably Luke/Leia way back when...) is a bit of a genre leap for a reader. There’s a few things I’ve done as JayDee I’d have absolutely thought fit my retired pen name better – stuff like You!, and the related stories, and a few others.

You know how it goes, try one code, and next you know, you’re wanting them all (except for NoSex….)
