  2. she's in the process of removing all her fanfiction, as she's now a published author.
  3. text chapter
  4. You know, there are several different things being addressed here. For example, when one writer inspires another's work, and the readers can CLEARLY see the similarity, it wouldn't hurt that person to contact the other writer and tell them, and then ask for permission would it? Particularly where it's close enough that you KNOW that someone will accuse you of plagiarism. Then you have the instance cited above for copy/pasting. Let's take the LotR fandom as an example. There is a wealth of written material for that fandom that authors do indeed take from, and then cite the source with footnotes. A third example is translated work. If the user has permission to translate and then post it, then it's NOT plagiarism. Keith answered this very well from an author's standpoint you know. Opensource software and writing are comparing APPLES and ORANGES. Opensource is out there FOR coders to use to help enhance their own code. Aside from that, where something is open source, there is always a licensing statement included in the source code which shows where it came from and that it is indeed OPEN SOURCE and covered by the GNU General License. Java, for example is free to use, but trademarked by Sun Microsystems. So is not technically opensource. Then you have Python and PHP, which ARE opensource and also free to use. (all are languages, not opensource coding that's written with the languages). This board (Invisionboard) for example, is NOT opensource. Whereas phpBB IS. The thing to remember with coding, is that regardless of the software, there is a HUGE modding community. The software writers of the original programs know this. Most of them encourage it. Finally, I'm going to say my opinion as an artist, where someone has indeed taken my own work and passed it off as their own. I have no problems sharing my work files if asked, so that the person asking to USE my stuff has the core file to work from. Never have. As long as I'm ASKED. Where it steams me, and where it steams you fanfic writers who've been plagiarized is where permission to use it is not asked. I don't really CARE if I'm credited so much (although that's always nice ), when it comes to the graphics as long as the other person asks to use my work. Obviously, if that person has been given my .psd files and other core files, they HAVE my permission and have been in extensive contact with me as that is where the files would come from.
  5. First of all, XP Pro has been discontinued by Microshit, so the likelihood of finding a registerable version any more isn't so good. As far as the components, depends on how new they must be. In other words, if you're willing to buy something that's a version or two behind the current release, you'll STILL get good hardware, but save loads of money.
  6. When I crashed the Vista machine (a dualcore), I had 5 tabs open in firefox, and 5 in IE, 2 documents, 1 spreadsheet, a Corel drawing open and 5 chat windows (3 different messengers). I went to open up a pdf....and it LOCKED UP. That's not much, really. My desktop, for example (2.8ghz Celeron, plenty of RAM), at any given time, I'll have Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop open, browser tabs open, several chat windows, a document or three of any given kind, a text editor open for script editing, generally a db program and a 3d graphics progam as well..sometimes one of my puzzle games when I run into something I need to step AWAY from. No problems, no crashes. XP Pro is the OS. The funny thing here is, with XP on the other machine, I'm sure I could easily do what I do on my desktop. But never, ever with Vista. The sad part of all this is the laptop outpowers my desktop in hardware. I SHOULD ideally be able to USE that to my advantage. But can't because of the OS. The only benefit, to me, of having Vista installed is for testing purposes for programming (has a few machines set up with different OS and OS versions for that very reason). Totally agree with DarkInuLord by the way...I've yet to run in to a laptop that can be made a gaming machine the way a desktop can. You want a gaming system, you go with a good solid desktop, preferably by a company like Alienware, if you gotta buy a pre built. Or if you know how to build one, the best possible components, of course. . The laptop is the first machine we've had in YEARS that we haven't built ourselves.
  7. Our big test at home to test the stability of an operating system is to see how long it takes me to crash it. It took me 2 minutes to crash Vista. That's it. I wasn't even DOING much. Just my normal stuff without getting into any extensive stuff (multiple tabs in the browser, several programs open and working). In Vista, I can have a whole TWO programs open besides my damn browser, before it starts getting wiggy. On my XP machine, I'll sometimes have 3 to 4 graphics programs open, be chatting in a few different windows, maybe have a spreadsheet, or document, or both open, as well as my ftp program and some database stuff (virtual servers and whatnot). With NO problems. EVER. I don't dare do that with Vista.
  8. First of all, if you have ANY browser toolbars (i.e. google, yahoo) uninstall them. The things are trojan and other virus attractors. Secondly, there is a shareware utility which works very well on rogues. Malwarebytes.org In fact, this particular utility is the only which actually worked in removing Antivirus2009 (a rogue malware which masquerades as an antivirus program). Those of you who are online a lot, should be running this utility DAILY. Antivirus programs- There are several GOOD free antivirus programs. Avira has less false positives, and is very good about finding rogueware as well. If one uses the two together, shouldn't have too much in the way of issues with the nasties anymore. download page There's a couple options for download, paid and free. I use the free version. It works very well.
  9. You'll have to start over again. Do a complet full format, not a quick format. Then reinstall windows.
  10. Looking at the specs you have up for your gaming system, you'd probably get no more than $200. It's that planned obsolescence thing ya know... regarding your virus problem, how comfortable are you working in the registry? If you're not, your best bet would be to reformat the machine. When you reinstall your browsers, stay far FAR away from browser toolbars. Those things are trojan magnets.
  11. This is anime, belongs in books Mens Rea (Guilty Mind)
  12. In process of deleting the ass yet again.
  13. What I can tell you all for certain is that Whoever is doing this, it's all automated I'm almost positive it's the same one or a few people this one is spoofing an IP range which is totally unrelated to this user (ICANN) *sighs*
  14. I'm almost certain this is the same one or two people doing this.
  15. Already working on it
  16. 'Tis the season I guess... This one plagiarised two different stories, from two separate authors. First story... original- plagiarised version- Second story... original - plagiarised version- Let's hope this one doesn't make a return appearance...
  17. Theft the third... original - plagiarised copy- Needless to say, we don't like plagiarism. But this one was really, really bad. 3 stories, 3 separate authors. SHEESH.
  18. Well, we only have proof of three of 'em (because I deleted the other two stories before one of the other mods could finish researching 'em...oops). Anyway... This user signed up in mid December, and in two days put up 5 stories. As I said, 3 of those 5 we have proof of plagiarism. It's LIKELY the other 2 that were up were also plagiarised. Theft the first... Original - plagiarised copy - Theft the second... original - plagiarised copy-
  19. This one decided to plagiarize one of our users who goes by Booknerd_Miss She changed the title, added a few things, but otherwise copied the first story exactly. original story-- plagiarized version-- These people never learn do they??
  20. It's also possible that the database server was rather busy at the time you got the error. The arcade IS working, more or less. There are some things which may not, until I fix the skins.
  21. Enter Sandman
  22. Wouldn't this be per sub domain?
  23. This particular troll has been deleted EIGHT TIMES now from the archive. Archive profile Has a bad habit of posting "story" upon "story" of nothingness....which does nothing but take up database space.
  24. It wasn't just all the youtube access which caused your slowdown, I'm sure. I would be checking their systems for downloaded stuff as well. Because that's the reason they gave you for bottlenecking, basically, was that you exceeded what they (your ISP) considered fair bandwidth usage. Depending on the ISP, that usage doesn't have to be a whole lot, in reality. It's why I have to pay extra to ensure I ALWAYS have good connection and don't get bottlenecked. With the ftp stuff I do, and various other things, were I on a normal connection, that would happen to me too.
  25. The ONLY subdomains that were not spambombed were books, cartoons, comics, celebrities, tv, original, non english, yugioh, and yuyu. Everything else was nailed to some degree or another. It also tends to coincide even more frequently with major holidays.
