I think wasting public funding is a bad idea no matter WHO it is that does it, and regardless of party and/or political affiliation. There IS no defending that kind of waste.

haha, see ya like my shark there.... Really, I do need more for the clean up. If you're interested, IM me in Yahell or AIM. With that thing, it's gotten so slow because for a long time I had 2 who had pressing real life matters, still have 2 with limited machine access, and 1 has shifted to archive moderation and helps where she can in the clean up. As far as the 2 with pressing real life matters, one is still under a heavy college schedule, the other has gotten some free time within the last few days. Which was a great relief to me. And of course then there's what I look at daily.... On a work day, for example, first thing I do is check email (5 different accounts) take care of it. Then, I attend to matters within the mail such as unhiding something, giving a user tech support, or just answering questions we get occasionally about some stuff. From there, I go to the admin queue in forum and check the validating members (admin queue) for linkage to their archive profile. If that's not provided (very common) I search the db both in the archive, and in a utility I have using email address if the user name provided gives me no hits. Then I go on to approve/delete from that queue. Where the user hasn't provided a link, I'll edit the profile to include it. After that, it's check in with the moderator staff and take care of things as needed there, that are my responsibility to deal with. Then from THERE, I start eyeballing the stories for sort, looking for glitches and etc. Of course, then there's the days I come home to the spam bomber from hell....and that always takes priority so it can be made to GO AWAY as quickly as possible. Mind you, somewhere in that mess I gotta make sure I get my housework done, spend time with my family, and other assorted daily rl things that everyone does. Needless to say, the sooner this damn clean up is done, the happier I will be. I haven't drawn a thing in over a YEAR because of other things that take time. ugh. Anyway, enough of my ranting, but if you seriously want to give a hand, your help will be much appreciated.

Cool! If it works out the way you're anticipating, show us what she looks like

I actually have something in mind for that for the entire subdomain. It's going to take a fair bit of time to implement. So, I'd rather do it all at one time, rather than piecemeal. Been thinking about how to do this where it work best not only for the database, but easier for the users as well. The database is always, always, always my primary concern, as it should be. Non functional db means no archive, period. It's going to be a bit of a wait, because I still have other subdomains to get through before I get to hp. As I am currently the ONLY one doing the sort/catalog for the most part, on top of everything else I do, you can see WHY the slow going. In any case, before any one even thinks to ask, this is the ONLY subdomain where I will implement what I have in mind for OC pairings. It's kind of a quirk of the subdomain. What will happen, once I get there, is that there will be a top level category created then the standard schema for story/pair type. I could actually do that now, and have you guys move 'em yourselves. Realistically, I know this won't happen (users moving the files). So instead I will concentrate my efforts in the sequence I originally stated.

Why God Why 'Bad Fanfiction' discussion forum
DemonGoddess replied to JayDee's topic in Great wall of ...
Took a quick lookie at it...gotta say, it's my kinda forum. -
Still thinking on the plot bunny farm too. The plot bunny thread being in this forum? not open to all.
-
Okay, what you'll want to do is break this up into multiple request type posts. As in you're looking for someone to request a story from you for certain worlds. Reason being for that, is that those are one of the parts of the forum actually open to everyone. This one is not. Also, somewhere around here is a plot bunny thread. Speaking of plot bunnies, I could actually make a subforum for that in the challenges/requests forums as well. Dunno, never really THOUGHT about it.

And have yet to sort slash and threesomes. Not to mention before MOVING anything from the tv subdomain for Angel, that has to be sorted as well before we move it. So, expect to see more sub sub categories, and you may even see some of the above disappear. Won't know for certain until we're completely done with the sort.

Captain Forehead was never a fave character of mine....

Needless to say, loads of other things have kept me from maintaining certain things in forum. DAMMIT.

Post a reply to this topic. As you've already got a story for it, it'd be done.

sexymermaid's Xander's beast

she's in the process of removing all her fanfiction, as she's now a published author. -
You know, there are several different things being addressed here. For example, when one writer inspires another's work, and the readers can CLEARLY see the similarity, it wouldn't hurt that person to contact the other writer and tell them, and then ask for permission would it? Particularly where it's close enough that you KNOW that someone will accuse you of plagiarism. Then you have the instance cited above for copy/pasting. Let's take the LotR fandom as an example. There is a wealth of written material for that fandom that authors do indeed take from, and then cite the source with footnotes. A third example is translated work. If the user has permission to translate and then post it, then it's NOT plagiarism. Keith answered this very well from an author's standpoint you know. Opensource software and writing are comparing APPLES and ORANGES. Opensource is out there FOR coders to use to help enhance their own code. Aside from that, where something is open source, there is always a licensing statement included in the source code which shows where it came from and that it is indeed OPEN SOURCE and covered by the GNU General License. Java, for example is free to use, but trademarked by Sun Microsystems. So is not technically opensource. Then you have Python and PHP, which ARE opensource and also free to use. (all are languages, not opensource coding that's written with the languages). This board (Invisionboard) for example, is NOT opensource. Whereas phpBB IS. The thing to remember with coding, is that regardless of the software, there is a HUGE modding community. The software writers of the original programs know this. Most of them encourage it. Finally, I'm going to say my opinion as an artist, where someone has indeed taken my own work and passed it off as their own. I have no problems sharing my work files if asked, so that the person asking to USE my stuff has the core file to work from. Never have. As long as I'm ASKED. Where it steams me, and where it steams you fanfic writers who've been plagiarized is where permission to use it is not asked. I don't really CARE if I'm credited so much (although that's always nice ), when it comes to the graphics as long as the other person asks to use my work. Obviously, if that person has been given my .psd files and other core files, they HAVE my permission and have been in extensive contact with me as that is where the files would come from.

First of all, XP Pro has been discontinued by Microshit, so the likelihood of finding a registerable version any more isn't so good. As far as the components, depends on how new they must be. In other words, if you're willing to buy something that's a version or two behind the current release, you'll STILL get good hardware, but save loads of money.

When I crashed the Vista machine (a dualcore), I had 5 tabs open in firefox, and 5 in IE, 2 documents, 1 spreadsheet, a Corel drawing open and 5 chat windows (3 different messengers). I went to open up a pdf....and it LOCKED UP. That's not much, really. My desktop, for example (2.8ghz Celeron, plenty of RAM), at any given time, I'll have Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop open, browser tabs open, several chat windows, a document or three of any given kind, a text editor open for script editing, generally a db program and a 3d graphics progam as well..sometimes one of my puzzle games when I run into something I need to step AWAY from. No problems, no crashes. XP Pro is the OS. The funny thing here is, with XP on the other machine, I'm sure I could easily do what I do on my desktop. But never, ever with Vista. The sad part of all this is the laptop outpowers my desktop in hardware. I SHOULD ideally be able to USE that to my advantage. But can't because of the OS. The only benefit, to me, of having Vista installed is for testing purposes for programming (has a few machines set up with different OS and OS versions for that very reason). Totally agree with DarkInuLord by the way...I've yet to run in to a laptop that can be made a gaming machine the way a desktop can. You want a gaming system, you go with a good solid desktop, preferably by a company like Alienware, if you gotta buy a pre built. Or if you know how to build one, the best possible components, of course. . The laptop is the first machine we've had in YEARS that we haven't built ourselves.

Our big test at home to test the stability of an operating system is to see how long it takes me to crash it. It took me 2 minutes to crash Vista. That's it. I wasn't even DOING much. Just my normal stuff without getting into any extensive stuff (multiple tabs in the browser, several programs open and working). In Vista, I can have a whole TWO programs open besides my damn browser, before it starts getting wiggy. On my XP machine, I'll sometimes have 3 to 4 graphics programs open, be chatting in a few different windows, maybe have a spreadsheet, or document, or both open, as well as my ftp program and some database stuff (virtual servers and whatnot). With NO problems. EVER. I don't dare do that with Vista.

First of all, if you have ANY browser toolbars (i.e. google, yahoo) uninstall them. The things are trojan and other virus attractors. Secondly, there is a shareware utility which works very well on rogues. Malwarebytes.org In fact, this particular utility is the only which actually worked in removing Antivirus2009 (a rogue malware which masquerades as an antivirus program). Those of you who are online a lot, should be running this utility DAILY. Antivirus programs- There are several GOOD free antivirus programs. Avira has less false positives, and is very good about finding rogueware as well. If one uses the two together, shouldn't have too much in the way of issues with the nasties anymore. download page There's a couple options for download, paid and free. I use the free version. It works very well.

You'll have to start over again. Do a complet full format, not a quick format. Then reinstall windows.
-
Looking at the specs you have up for your gaming system, you'd probably get no more than $200. It's that planned obsolescence thing ya know... regarding your virus problem, how comfortable are you working in the registry? If you're not, your best bet would be to reformat the machine. When you reinstall your browsers, stay far FAR away from browser toolbars. Those things are trojan magnets.
