killed it and the other spam fics

hey mouse, The offer of help is much appreciated. What we've been looking at as a stop gap is a way to incorporate recaptcha into the archive. It was the primary reason for this last forum upgrade, which as I'm sure you've seen, stopped the automated spam bots. That will at least stop the review bombs. One of the nice things about this program, is that for the new stuff in progress, it can easily be incorporated to where the autohidden emails can be seen, if the user is logged in, and proves they're human by using it. The problem is how to incorporate it without crashing the pre-existing stuff. That we do not want to do. It looks like it should be fairly straightforward. At least I'm hoping so. Of course, we will test it out first, before actually deploying it archive wide. The biggest sticking point though is code variance, as the archive is written mostly in php3, and a good part php2, with SOME php4 (those are later additions to improve the useability). The query structure is very very different, hence the time in reworking and just overall writing it new. We're pretty much starting from scratch on the code, with a pre exisiting dataset.

Okay, first of all, IF I can track a user via IP to his/her personal ISP login, then I do have tools to be able to block that person from ever accessing any of the subdomains here. Unfortunately for me, the archive does not have the ability to track by IP. So, not only can I not trace it out and see if it's a proxy, or an actual traceable IP, unless I happen to be home and not working, I won't be able to look into the access logs for the data as well. As it stands, when most of this happened yesterday I was asleep for the first part, and working for the second. As to not DOING something about the code, would you like us to unleash half written SHIT that won't work because it's not tested? And have the real PROBABILITY of losing the entire database? I certainly would not. There are a whole two of us doing all this. We both work full time plus hours. So, somewhere in between work, sleep, and other things having to do with normal living (not to mention all the OTHER crap I'm supposed to do for the forum and other things as well), we also fit in the coding. You're talking about in most for instances, thousands of lines of code for just ONE of the scripts. All of which has to be debugged, and all of which we have to make sure will work with the database and the current data itself. I don't see you devoting hours every damn day of your life to do things to maintain, stabilize, and fix things for this fiction portal. Sound cranky, do I? You bet I am. Ya think I should just give up my job and not pay my bills so I can devote 24/7 to this perhaps? Should I also ignore my family in favor of the archive? They'd really LOVE that. Aside from that, I just spent the last 2 1/2 hours deleting all that crap. So ya know, of anyone, I would love to have the ability to block someone like that instantly. I don't, so I make do and suffer with the rest of you.

Okay, I just finished deleting 2543 spam stories, and 417 spam reviews. I will eyeball the archives and make sure I didn't miss anything.
-
<---is still cleaning up review spam, just finished through hp subdomain.
-
Okay, it may take me awhile to sort all this out, so where you have links to the spammer, that will certainly make it quicker. Have several of those already.

I'll get to this in the next couple days or so. In future, if you would, new category requests go as replies to the pinned topic in this forum.
-
it depends on what software you use, really, to create the file in the first place.

Sub-Category Renaming Request
DemonGoddess replied to WotanAnubis's topic in Archive Category requests
Probably because it's a pre existing sub cat (from before when I started helping out with this), and a game I'm unfamiliar with. So, sure, can be done. -
they make it a jpg, and alter the compression rate of it, so it's not as high quality, for example, as it would be if the file was bigger. Due to bandwidth concerns, I don't honestly see the file size limitation increasing.

Nope, no way to privatize avatar usage

This user, because she apparently can't write certain kinds of scenes, thought it was perfectly alright to lift, without hardly changing a thing, scenes from three different books. This is just ONE of the passages that was stolen Interestingly enough, this "author" has also posted her work on ff.net (which still has it up last we checked) Here's a "snap" of the reviews, which point out the plagiarism there as well. What was found initially by us, was that this user had plagiarised portions of "Narcissus in Chains" and "Micah". Word for word. Naturally, this user is not welcome here, not ever again.

Double Post (2 authors?)
DemonGoddess replied to thenighting-gale's topic in Duplicate Stories Addressed
It's very likely not only a duplicate story, but as you pointed out, a duplicate membership. I'll check in the db and take care of it. -
I could always make it its own, as if memory serves, it's for the formatting that the file types are mentioned

Added/not added through 3/11/09
DemonGoddess replied to DarkKennith's topic in Archive Category requests
Do you have stories ready for these categories? -
for bands/groups of people/celebs, individual people You'll notice there are THREE elements which must be present. The work is fiction Affiliation/knowledge of the person(s), individually THIS MEANS the band/group/person(s) MUST be named No making any profit in any form for this fiction.

-GASP- My own story glitched?!
DemonGoddess replied to Ezriee's topic in Orphan Stories/Chapters Addressed
ahhh, not a glitch an orphan chapter. I'll get it fixed shortly. Am going through duplicates and stuff now. -
Archive Not Accessible to the Sight Impaired or Screenreaders
DemonGoddess replied to a topic in Fiction Archive
There is NO captcha option in the archive. Never has been. That's been strictly a forum feature. I'll have to check and see if the audio option is turned on for that, or even available for the forum. We're already looking at setting up a captcha/recaptcha system for the new stuff as it is. It's much more secure, and will allow things such as anonymous reviews, where the user must be a person to leave the review. Cuts way down on the spam activity. As to reworking the scripts and how they draw in the archive, we are actually in the middle of rewriting the whole thing anyway. So, we (manta2g and I) can see what is possible and what is not possible for this as well. It seems to me that what we may end up having to do is something similar to the lofi function for the forum. What that does, is make it all text based. It's there for a number of reasons of course, access speed being one, compatibility to other software being another, as well as making it friendlier in special circumstances. You have to understand that not only is the archive software old and out of date, the company that originally made it no longer exists. So, anything we do to it, whether new scripts, updates and improvements, are all something that we have to code up from scratch. Oh, looked up the interpreter software that you use (JAWS) and found that it has a new update where using Firefox will make it so you can browse more easily. Until we've got everything else done, that may be the way to go for you. Not just for here, but elsewhere as well. In any case, yes, Jaxxy told me to expect to hear from you. I'd actually like the email and/or IM, because that will help me for the notes and whatnot I'll need to have set up insofar as needs go for sight impaired. The more details I have at hand, the better it is for us when we get to the programming. -
Virtua Fighter "challenge" posted in archive
DemonGoddess replied to The Pairing Guy's topic in UnStories Addressed
Well, the old ones, where we've not sorted, done final recategorization and etc, when we get there will go the way of the dodo anyway..... -
