All you can truly do is ignore this sort of thing. When it happens offsite like this, there is very little any of us can do about it. Whether as users, mods here, or whatever. The most that I would be able to do, for example, as a moderator, is to voice my objections to the moderators of the other site on your behalf, and hope that they did something about it. Now, I CAN do something about it here.

offsite linking is actually something that's going to happen. Rather than the upload thing now.

Actually depends on what that bank amount IS. And, if you remember, the store (which is what the bank is part of) has yet to be ported back in after the forum upgrade.

First of all, manta2g did a WONDERFUL job with the new coding additions. And a bit more in the way of cleaning it up more as well. reCAPTCHA- What this does, is prevent spamming. It was a major part of the last forum upgrade, in point of fact. Functions it has been added to, are: Add new story Leave a review By adding it to those two functions, a couple things are accomplished. First and very important, spam bomb attacks like we recently suffered, should not happen any more. Secondly, if an author opts to allow anonymous reviews, they can do so without fear of having their review boards spam bombed. Paginated review boards This is very handy, especially for the authors with 50 or more reviews. I'm sure you've all noticed the closer you get to 100 reviews, the more sluggish the review board behaves. Until it reaches a point to where it won't load at all. By paginating the boards, this makes it so that is no longer an issue. Yes, we are aware the sort is currently oldest to newest. Not to worry though, that will be changed to newest to oldest. Report links/buttons Now, if any of you find something or someone you know to be a clear TOS violation, and wish to report it, it's a simple click. This will launch the user's email handler, and get the email report sent off to the correct address. New registering users This one will eventually affect all users in the archive. At this point in time, this new function ONLY affects new users, just now registering. Although that is a very long time away (several months at minimum), as this change for ALL user names will not go into effect until the new software is tested and ready for deployment. For registration, the user name must be 8 or more characters in length. The only special characters allowed for this will be underscore and hyphen. The pen name has to be a minimum of 4 characters in length. Special characters allowed for this are hyphen, underscore and space. Password must be 8 or more characters an email address must be entered. There are more updates besides these, please click this link and read the news. It's ALL covered there.

The rewards of little girls
DemonGoddess replied to Keith Inc.'s topic in Duplicate Stories Addressed
I'll look in to whether or not it's the same person, with multiple ID's. If it's not, then it's a form of plagiarism -
heh It's more time consuming the back and forth stuff, I think. Than the actual mechanics of hiding/unhiding. THAT'S quick. 'sokay though, it's part of my job after all....so not ever a bother

Archive 'LATEST' Function Doesn't Work
DemonGoddess replied to madlodger's topic in Archive Tech Support
It was changed to where it showed a maximum of 30, to reduce query load drastically (for each review which is displayed, a query is executed). Stories where you have many, many reviews, tend to have their review boards load slowly, or not at all. This FIXES that, so it's no longer a problem. In fact, by giving one the option of showing up to 30 at a time, that's pretty much the limit of where we should ever be for query execution per page displayed. We noticed late last night that the sort order was reverse of what we wanted, so that'll be addressed I'd expect within the next few days. (Was intended to sort newest to oldest, it currently sorts oldest to newest, but as I said, this is temporary). -

Archive 'LATEST' Function Doesn't Work
DemonGoddess replied to madlodger's topic in Archive Tech Support
The update is complete from books through hp subdomains, and anime through inu so far. It's almost done. -
That's exactly why we insist on the fandom, rather than characters. Because by disclaiming it, you disclaim the characters, the world, and whatever else is involved WITH it. It's all inclusive. This helps to compensate for the inconvenience of the teeny tiny field we have to work with. Once we have that field resized, what I'm hoping to see is more creativity with 'em. I've seen some very, very FUNNY disclaimers in checking. In fact, it sparked an idea for further down the road, to see who can come up with the most original/funny/etc disclaimer while STILL covering the requirements. I bet with all the creative people we have here, we'll see stuff ranging from real groaner type stuff (puns and such) to some that are just so outright funny we'll all read 'em and laugh ALOT.

Archive 'LATEST' Function Doesn't Work
DemonGoddess replied to madlodger's topic in Archive Tech Support
Latest, if I'm remembering right, will display in the center block, so that there is also access to the main menu for each subdomain. Same thing with "next" and "previous" click points, just a bit of different placement. -
what do you do when you've fixed a TOS violation?
DemonGoddess replied to janusmaxwell's topic in All Other TOS Violations
First, it should be available to you in your user panel, the story. What email address did you send to? I take care of this, and do check for corrections upon notification, and then the story is notated in our working document, and unhidden. I don't recall seeing an email from anyone with a user name resembling your forum name. I need the story title, and the subdomain it's in. Normally, you would indeed email that this has been corrected, but only if it's been hidden first. If a disclaimer is corrected before a story is hidden, we simply make note of it and that's the end of it for that story. In general, yes, if it's a minor TOS violation, once corrected, if mail notification is needed, that's how you would do that. Mail to this address: TOS_team@adult-fanfiction.org. Generally speaking, if a user is approached by a moderator via email in the first place, the response would be the using the same method. For the disclaimers, we tell you all, that once you've fixed it, delete the warn. In that for instance, no mail notification is needed. -
Archive 'LATEST' Function Doesn't Work
DemonGoddess replied to madlodger's topic in Archive Tech Support
Yep, there are some minor coding changes being done at the moment. Some nice upgrades included with that as well, which you'll see once it's done. -
Heh. You'd be surprised how many "don't own, don't sue" we see each and every day. Consistently. Now, for the increase in the field size for reviews. Which, as I said is not something that'll happen YET. It's certainly something that will indeed happen. 240 characters is NOT ENOUGH space to be able to do what many of you would like to with the space. However, I don't anticipate the field change to be made until after the new stuff is ready for deployment. Having said that, it certainly wouldn't hurt to look at revisiting that as a minor change prior to finishing up the software in development. So, I will put that on our to do list, and next time manta2g and I are talking, we'll take a quick look at it as well.
-
nah this is fine...I'll get it taken care of for ya

As far as I know, we don't have a specific rule in place regarding holding a story hostage for reviews. However, the best action I can think of for it, is to ignore the user ENTIRELY. I mean, after all, they're after attention, yes? Don't give it to 'em. Now, in the past, I've gone off on users for exactly that sort of thing. Let 'em know just how immature I thought the behavior WAS (not here, elsewhere). Because it really is. I can think of nothing that will spoil a story for me faster than the writer doing that.

Something to keep in mind with the disclaimers, is that by October 21st of last year, I'd gone through and corrected, subdomain by subdomain, with the exception of crossover stories, all stories in the archive, using a query per category. So, anything dated from 10/21/08 and before, SHOULD have been addressed and not be a problem (except crossovers, no time to individually edit each and every one of those). That was a rather time consuming task, as we have several subdomains with MULTIPLE fandoms in them as subcategories and/or top level categories. So each time the query was executed, it had to be modified to fit that particular subcategory, for wording. That was a one time thing when I did it. Just a few days ago, manta2g and I re-explored putting BACK the auto-disclaimer, which had been removed MONTHS before either one of us got into the code here. There's a very good reason as to why. The query structure involved is actually 2 versions ahead of what the archive is written in, so by doing that (it's not just a simple dropdown menu), it causes problems with the rest of the old code, which is just that. OLD and obsolete. So, we tinkered around for a bit, and sorry to say, we cannot reinstate that function in THIS version of the software. Wish we could, it sure would save alot of headaches for everyone. However, if we tried to, it would in all probability crash the current software. NOT an option. This function will be put in place in the new software. We'd already planned for it. Now, as far as looking at disclaimers every day, that's not the only thing we're looking at and for. That's just the start of it, actually. We also look for minors, trolls, plagiarists (sometimes one of us recognizes a story, and remember it belonging it to someone else) and other things like that. As to the size of the disclaimer field, yes, it will be increased, but not in this version of the software.
-
Ah ok. I looked it up in our worksheet for this, and it's listed as not having a profit statement added to the disclaimer. That would be why it was hidden.
-
What are the titles? What it LOOKS like to me, is that they were likely hidden because the disclaimers were not quite right. You can still access them from your user panel, yes?

Well... let's see Links articles as to what she did elsewhere... tvtropes.com Fan History Wiki yep, she matches all that exactly.

Sub-Category Renaming Request
DemonGoddess replied to WotanAnubis's topic in Archive Category requests
I was thinking something even more specific... Depending upon the amount of stories per category that belongs to series. If they're not overly populated, I can create what you asked as subcategory, and move the pre-existing subcategories into it as sub sub categories. Dunno, gotta think about that a bit more, and I will probably end up applying that to other game series as well once we get there for sorting. -
