In The Lord of the Rings, they had a crystal ball like thing in which Sauron and Sarumon communicated with. I don't know why this popped in my mind, but I thought that maybe the angels could have scattered something similar about, but they worked as transceivers instead of direct communication. Not sure if this is plausible, but maybe phones are the results of humans improving on the original means of communication? I hated those lightning beetles. They killed me more than anything in the game other than the bosses. However, I can see them being used as a source of energy. Maybe they are confined, and computers at least, can be charged by placing it on the cage, for lack of a better word.

Possible to have them as artifacts, but with such isolation and desolation, they may not work very far outside those little areas of gathered people, because upkeeping the cell towers would just be too damn dangerous. Hell, getting signal could be such a relief because you knew you were close to a pocket of civilization.

  4. Shame they didn’t take down all the copied and pasted stories when the first few were raised with ‘em though! “Oh, yes, genuine misunderstanding. It wasn’t nailed down so we figured ‘public domain,’ could happen to anyone, look at Melania with that speech... By the way there’s another baker’s dozen we did the same with, so we’ll delete ourselves...” Would have saved the guest and yourself a ton of work and time identifying and deleting the rest. That’s time you could have spent writing a new work of literature, wandering lazily through beautiful scenery, interacting with family or friends, or even reading fanfic about cute elves wearing each other’s assholes out! Honestly, I do respect the time and effort the staff put in here (and that anonymous guest too, for this case!). I’d always been far, far too lazy.

Diablo 2 had those fucking lightning beetles in the desert. A way to harvest them as cruelly as possible would be fine by me.

I can’t remember if Diablo has the equivalent of the D&D mephits—wee demons that use various elemental attacks like fire, acid, electricity… I know Diablo 3 has those desert serpents that possess an electrical attack. Maybe they could be harvested to recharge things? Phones are just damned puzzling, though. I can’t really thing of an equivalent method of long-distance communication that works in a Diablo-like setting.

  7. If we believe the plagiarism was a deliberate act of theft, we would delete the account entirely and ban the user. We take it quite seriously here, since it is theft of intellectual property, and illegal. In this case, I do believe there was a genuine confusion as to the definition of what constitutes a work in the public domain, which is why I’m not calling for account deletion and a ban. The member profile has been edited by me to remove any mention of sending in stories to be posted here on AFF. Other sites may allow members to post work written by other people, but we do not, as we clearly state in our Terms of Service. While we do allow stories based on works in the public domain, I rely on the standards discussed more in depth here to determine whether or not a work is indeed in that category.

  8. One possible answer might be that having a story on the most recent page improves the chances for getting attention to your own writing and build a fanbase. Ifthe stolen story at the same time pushes another author from the most recent page then you get double benefit. I would not say AFF suffers much from this, other story sites with rating systems to promote top content are much more vulnerable to manipulation. A random idea would be that some kind of penalty so that discovered plagiarism gets the rest of the stories of the author penalized so they end further down on the recent page could be effective to make plagiarism less attractive to authors with low morale. I does of course not know if your technical platform support this so this is just a random idea about how you could lessen the workload for moderation.

  9. Exactly. I’ll need to fix that as well, but not today!

“Oh god, We’re gonna die.” Said Pam bleedingly heavily. The pack of Wendigo had been a nasty surprise. The sun was setting and somewhere in that dark forest those things waited. “But look on the bright side. We have full bars.” Jon stated morbidly content as he showed her his phone screen though cracked to hell in back the bars were fully visible “Nobody’s dying tonight ya dipstick.” Came a third voice. “Thank god your phone still has those third-party apps installed.” They both turned to see a group emerge looking wary but unbowed. The End had come and gone and they remained. “Jon, You owe me a keg even at the end of the fricking world your bad taste in apps saved us.”
