  1. Head, meet desk.  Desk, meet head.  Repeat.  Again.  Again.  Again.

  2. Saw someone complain that women characters only ever get written to the Virgin, Mother or Whore archtypes. It’s a fair point about poor characterisation and representation in a lot of media. I am glad to see I avoided that by managing Virgin, Mother, Whore and Lupa.

  9. So I’m working on Part Nine of The Woman in the Statue (the goal is to be done around the 18th), and I wanted to describe the lobby of the Van Dijk building, but how big is it?

Now I could just bullshit this...but you all know I won’t.

So the building is about 300 meters tall and is a regular octagon in cross section (meaning all eight sides are the same length).  If the lobby in which Chloe, Luzurial and the assault team fight hybrids takes up one entire side (“edge” in geometric terms), how big across is it?

Well, if we assume the building has a base diameter of one sixth of its height, then it’s 50 m in diameter and thus has a circumradius (the radius of the circle connecting all eight vertices/corners of the octagon) of 25 m.  Each eighth of the octagon can be described as an isosceles triangle with two sides 25 m long (since those “sides” are the circumradius) meeting at an angle of 45 degrees.  So now I have to find the missing side.

Just to remind everyone that I am not a math major, I literally had to use Google to be reminded that an isosceles triangle is just two right triangles smooshed together, which I really should have remembered from 9th Grade Geometry.  Anyway, since the sine (0.3826834323650897717284599840304) of one angle (22.5 degrees) of a right triangle is equal to the length of the opposite side divided by the length of the hypotenuse (25 m), and then we multiply that result (9.56708580912724429321149960076) by two to get the end of the isosceles…

So the lobby is about nineteen meters wide.  Why do I do this to myself?

  10. finally got back on here and the pit just to delete some more stories. *sigh* i wish i knew where my motivation for writing went! or if i will ever get back to it

  12. Things which literally never happen to me:

    1. Hearing Nuvole Bianche without mentally melting into a blissful rapturous puddle
    2. Seeing “Woozle” snoring with his mouth open and his little tongue hanging out without snickering
    3. Smelling an old book without the urge to huff it like a lunatic regardless of who’s watching
    4. Tasting a well-prepared quality tea without being thankful for life in general
    5. Feeling Heiferlump step on me with her pointy little toes without shrieking in pain then apologizing for startling her.

I’m honestly really glad to find out about the book-huffing club.  I remember going to the library and just loving the smell.  I always thought I was really weird.

I mean, I know I’m weird (I talk to the bugs I pick up to take out of the house), but you know, at least it’s not for the book smell thing. :)

Barely a mile in and I get blindsided with a duststorm. Good old AZ

Maybe the reason I’m convinced there’s no nasty people on the forum is that I am the nasty person.

No you’re not.  I’ve given you a lot of opportunities to make jokes at my expense or insult me, and you haven’t done so.  As for accidental awkwardness, I do that all the time.

      Speaking of which…

I’ll also say that the majority by far of the “Oh, gods, delete my account now, man!” emails I got were from readers only, not writers.

I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to annoy you, BronxWench.  I was just trying to make a guess based on my own personal experience.  As it happens, I’m honestly not even sure why you’d need an account just for reading (unless you’re really dedicated to reviewing stories that don’t allow anonymous reviews).  Again, sorry if I bothered you.

Assuming you didn’t sign up with an email attached to any of your real world stuff it’s pretty unlikely they’d make a connection anyway.

No, I developed the email I have listed here exclusively for AFF purposes.

Okay, I know that was a joke, but seriously, while I find incest a powerful fantasy and story element, both on a physical and emotional level, that’s in the abstract.  Thinking about that with my actual family members is seriously gross.  Some fantasies really only work when detached from any personal experience.

The thing is, people make a bigger issue out of a breach here at AFF than a breach at Equifax, which exposed highly detailed personal information and financial accounts to bad actors.

I think it may have to do with the way other people look at you afterward.  Personal data mined from Equifax?  You’re a victim of malicious hackers and you have everyone’s sympathy.  Family and personal acquaintances find out you wrote stories featuring incest or rape?  Suddenly the fact that your data was hacked matters way less than the stuff you wrote.

      Quote

Here, you’re just going to be embarrassed when your friends and family find out you read dubious porn about mainly fictional characters.

Again, I think the worry is less about the stuff you read and more about the stuff you write.  Explaining The Woman in the Statue to my parents would be awkward, but if they found out I wrote Little Brother’s Lesson over on Literotica, I guarantee you there would be a very painful conversation about why I wrote a romantic incest story.

      Quote

And frankly, if you’re that conflicted about your taste in reading materials, maybe you shouldn’t be reading things on AFF in the first place. Just sayin’…

I...suppose I could leave, delete my accounts here and on Lit and delete the stories from my computer.  The conflict there is that I am actually enjoying writing WitS and happy about the fact that other people are apparently enjoying reading it.  In addition to that, everyone here has been really nice to me, and I can’t accurately communicate how much that means to me.

I don’t know.  Maybe I’m just rolling the dice and hoping that hackers figure I’m not significant enough to screw with.

  18. Wooo! I hit the 5 chapter mark! Since that’s my I-Got-This-Far-So-Pretty-sure-I-Won’t-Drop-This-fic-Like-I-Did-The-Last-Fifty-Yay line in he sand, you know what that means, don’t you? Tiiime to unleash this porny beast upon the world!!!! Mwahahahaahaha!

Well… Soon as I edit and wrangle me a beta… BEWARE and so forth.

  19. Dreams are weird. This thing could rupture universes by will alone and cause stars to supernova by looking at them.

Its galaxies were breathtaking works of art. Somehow it knew I pitied it and that pity was an insult. For all its power it just didn’t have that spark required for life. Like having all the ingredients for a recipe but still somehow missing a vital component. Sorta like wanting to make a pizza but not having an oven.

It said life was pointless but I’ve never known the answer so inherently.

I said the point of life was to live. That it had no right to insult even a single living cell. Since they just by existing were doing what they were meant to.

Its worlds were beautiful. In a sad sorta away for the one thing they all had in common was that they were devoid of life and always would be. It is the height of tragedy that all that beauty and breathtaking views were for it and it alone. And I couldn’t help but pity it.

  20. Keep yer fingers crossed that we get staffing issues finally settled for where I work.  It has been BRUTAL.  Sixty hours worked since Saturday.  And I’m not done.
