As far as adopting a plot, there are many tropes that are common enough to be considered fair game. However, any unique element to this story would have to be excluded to avoid plagiarizing the original author. The original author's archive profile leaves some breadcrumbs for you to find them, I'd strongly recommend you do so, and get permission to do what you've suggested in your post above.
