      “You failed”

He bristled but getting his assbeat seven ways to sunday had mellowed this loss. To be fair, who expected an unwashed illiterate apostate peasant from the middle of bum fuck nowhere.

To be possibly the hero of legend?

“I won’t fail again.” He muttered angry at himself more than anything.

The emperor laughed softly for a moment.

“ You had your chance and that’s why I’m sending my incredibly well equipped, masterfully trained in cooperation elite units to deal with them. This world isn’t going to conquer itself and its just not worth it to lose a subordinate sending you after someone who through luck or what have you bested you. They’ll have confidence having beat you once. And this is why I’m the world conquering emperor.”

“Besides you look so pent up.”

The cursed tax collector gasped as the emperor’s hand expertly found its way down his trousers.

      “Oh lord.” He cried.

And the emperor replied with a momentary painful clutch.

“Your Imperial Majesty.” The emperor corrected.

  2. In honor of that soulless bleak caricature that is the hell I’ve been forced to watch that is rings of power.

I kinda want to do a porn heavy, LOTR dark fanfic safe in the knowledge of no matter what I do.

It will never approach the level of desecration that amazon has inflicted on the rest of us.

The LOTR stories on this site is lightyears better even the bleak gritty ones and for that they all should be commended and certainly celebrated.

I mean it only took them half-way through the first season to get a single decent scene. By the time they end its practically a garuntee they’ll make one good episode.

There’s an interesting way to relatively date something.

Prior to the 19th century Natural Philosophy was the word for what we’d call Science. It’s a nifty little signifer that adds more to story.

Progression Goes Natural Philosophy to Natural Science to Science. Scientist wasn’t really used until it was coined in 1833 by William Whewell

So anything essentially prior industrial revolution. To be accurate you’d use Natural Philosopher :D

One time me and a buddy went for a run without checking the weather and some how missed that there was an active tornado watch in the area.  Halfway into the run, the skies got dark, like might as well have been night, winds were threatening to uproot trees (and us) and it started raining sideways.  We had to take shelter in a nearby building until it passed.

Word order seems to vary substantially among languages. According to linguist John McWhorter, there are even a few languages in which the order of words is meaningless; they have other mechanisms for identifying subject vs object, etc.

    4. WillowDarkling

      WillowDarkling

If I remember correctly, Japanese is one of those languages where the word order isn’t fixed. It’s not meaningless, but the word order isn’t nearly as fixed as it is in English :D

  14. Working at a mall you see all sorts of people.

Tonight, I had an unpleasant experience to meet a blackguard.

A fair bit disconcerting to feel unclean in the traditional sense.

Definitely, not used to people able to poison the atmosphere where they dwell and defile the vibe of a place long after they leave. With a lingering wrongness that raises the hairs on the back of your neck.

Co-workers called them demon people and I’m inclined to agree. I steadfastly refused to look at these people in the eye because there was something inhumane in the way they looked at others.

I don’t think the extra strength cleaning solution covers spiritual filth.

It's taking some time to process for sure. And with it my ability to write is utterly frozen.

New information requires analysis and ponderance. Especially, since some people or something attempting to pass as people thoroughly violates your worldview by existing.  I have to re-evaluate.

At heart, I’m an optimistic realist. Everything will turn out for the better.

In a world of gray full of nuance and context. It's best to avoid the unrepentant black that's for sure.

And three other people at work are suffering from nightmares because of them so i’m not alone.

There is no explanation for some people. I picked out my kids’ clothing when they were preteens, and there were no arguments. They dressed appropriately for their age, because I believe children are children, not miniature adults or objects of desire.

    4. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

Children should be allowed to be children.

I won’t pretend to understand such a mindset. I don’t want to understand anyone who actively sexualize their own children.

  17. Writer question.

Has anyone gotten a little anxious about chapter length? Is it too long or not long enough?

How do you know when its the perfect length?

    1. Show previous comments  1 more
    2. BronxWench

      BronxWench

This is one of those questions that plague writers everywhere. Readers struggle with it as well.

There is a school of thought that chapters work at anywhere from 3-5k words per chapter. Any longer, and it’s hard to find a stopping point, since most readers don’t have the luxury of reading a book through in one sitting. Any shorter, and you hit the same problem people have with flash fiction in general: how do you convey sufficient information to hold the reader’s attention and make them want to read the next chapter?

Personally, I like 4-5k words per chapter. That’s my comfort level as a writer. As a reader, as long as you hold my attention, I’ll keep reading. I’ve stayed up half the night to finish a particularly engrossing book.

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

As the faatus who assembled that 100k+ chapter way earlier, I thought it a point of pride at the the time when I had consolidated a whole bunch of smaller chapters into that mega chapter during a rewrite.  However, with a lot more experience under my belt, I’ve since realized it’s “a wall of text”, and it sort of trivializes any particular scene in the chapter when it’s as about long as JKR’s entire third book (not to mention there was *no* separation between scenes so it was all kinda “squashed” together).  An additional drawback to those writing 100k+ chapters on FF.net is that its word counter caps the per-chapter count to 65k for the story’s total word count.

    4. JayDee

      JayDee

I never used to really think about it, but when I re-did a couple of my old stories I did split them into chapters rather than large massive oneshots. Seemed easier to read!

  18. Editorial Review came back. :errm:

So I was correct to put mature warning. They enjoyed it… For a middle novel.

    2. BronxWench

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Google search later, pen names may be trademark-protected, but aren’t copyright-protected.  Though, more practically, I think other writers (& lawyers) may gang up on somebody poaching another’s name.

A scorched-earth option, make your writing sufficiently notorious so nobody dares to be associated with it.
