  4. One of our members, Sessakag, has had the unfortunate experience of finding their story posted without permission on this site: https://www.patreon.com/WhatIfFanfics/collections. The stories that have been used are largely in the Naruto fandom, although there are some crossovers as well. The worst part? It's behind a paywall. That's right--this plagiarist expects you to pay $10 to listen a story published by the actual author for free right here on AFF. See, that's the plagiarist's hook. These are AUDIO copies. Now, mind you, this plagiarist had their YouTube account suspended, most likely for the very same thing, but they don't seem able to learn their lesson. If your story has been stolen, Patreon wants you to reach out to the "creator" on Patreon and ask them to be nice and take it down. If that doesn't work, they also suggest filing a DMCA takedown notice (https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/208377833). The catch is that you need a Patreon account to report the stolen content. However, the more times this thief is reported, the more likely it is that Patreon will be forced to take action. I want to send a huge thank you to Sessakag for reporting this to us. Even if AFF can't tell Patreon how to run their site, we can be proud of our members, who respect the hard work put into creating the fan fictions we all enjoy. UPDATE: Patreon responded quickly to the DMCA request from Sessakag, and removed the story from the Patreon page, although the account hasn't been suspended. If you too have been a victim, please go and file that DMCA takedown notice with Patreon! ANOTHER UPDATE: It seems there are now YouTube videos where this person reads a story aloud, so they haven’t learned their lesson from the first YouTube suspension. If your story was used here, please report it and file a DMCA takedown request.

  5. So uh, manager got axed but she decided to deadman’s switch and nuke alot of other...enjoyers of group extracurricular activities by sending evidence to HQ directly…. And I knew none of this and walked straight into the aftermath of the hidenburg. There’s burning bridges… And then there’s nuking the thing. So the fallout has yet to be determined but on the other hand kinda have to respect going out on your own terms via nuclear fission.

  9. I had a mini break alone last week. I had dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant. Everyone around me was eating fancy meals with glasses of wine and champagne that they were clinking together. I had pizza, mousse for dessert and a mug of hot chocolate. I’m a takeaway and fast food joint kind of guy. These are not my people.

  11. I’ve gotten unsolicited requests that try to push me into writing for fandoms that I know nothing about. Guess that’s my hard stop for writing, along with the desire to finish what I’ve already started. And TBH, if I had fallen into the potter universe today, it’s unlikely that I’d even delve into fanfiction.

  12. Reminds me of an ancient joke I heard when I was a mere lad. A young woman comes into an embroidery shop and asks the proprietor if they can do custom work on something delicate. Asked what she means, she pulls a pair of nylons* out and says, “Up here at the top where it’s reinforced for the garter.” Examining it, the owner says, “It’s kind of touchy but I think we could manage it. What do you want it to say?” “Something I saw on the back of a truck, ‘If you can read this you’re too close.’” “Okay, would you like that in Roman or perhaps script lettering?” “Braille.” *I said it was ancient.

  17. I would say so personally. I mean, most characters are the gender they are for a reason. Particularly if the character has appeared on screen, like most of mine have. So I prefer to create an OC rather than gender bend a character. Or I just shift the sexuality of the character. More than a few of the female characters I write about have intense relationships with other women. Though most of them aren’t explicitly lesbians. So occasionally I just give them a broader sexuality, usually bisexual.

  19. There’s a lot of bad news out there these days. So I’ve decided that every day for the next week, I’ll post one piece of good news. To decrease summer heat and improve air quality, New York City’s city council has decided to up NYC’s tree canopy coverage from 22% to 30%. A lidar-based mapping system will be used to identify places where the new trees would do the most good. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/30/new-york-city-tree-planting-lidar-mapping

Woozle, the little shit, let half the dose drip out of his mouth and roll down my shirt and shorts. I grumbled about it—because that medicine stains, turns into tar, and smells like rotten fish a roadkill—and what did Cold say? ”Well. Pussy likes to dribble.” I married this clown. I married him. (He’s not wrong, though.)

  27. Hmm….Halloween story, where the happy ending is the tragic ending. Not sure how to pull that off in the original universe I tend to write in.
    4 points
  28. A lot of my stories are primarily erotica, so “happy endings” are par for the course. Seriously, my endings tend to be predictable. If the story has a tragic storyline, then it probably has a tragic ending. If it’s a happy storyline, happy ending. Although if it’s a Halloween story, all bets are off.

Hi, GeorgeGlass. By itself, no. While the spaceships from the Star Trek universe keep Captain’s and Ship’s Logs, other ships of notable size also keep Ship’s Logs, and the ship’s Captain might also keep a “Captain’s Log” or journal/diary of personal observations he or she doesn’t wish to keep in the main ship’s log. Seeing the erotica/pornographic bent of this site, I would also assume that the “Captain” just might be well-endowed (or tragically not endowed,) and was (at least trying) to get “busy.” Cheers!

  30. Finally can got to a point where I can think of my book again. I decided to pause in the rewrite and start the 2nd one. Since by being further down the road I know what happens and can foreshadow things in book 1 better. We’ll see if I went supercrazybonkers or that it works.

  33. Maybe getting one character getting the other’s name slightly wrong? Something that’s eerily similar to another’s name?

  34. Well, flip the tables around and imagine it’s a fanfic with YOU as the central character. It’d be a fictional narrative putting events/actions into your own personal history/future, yeah, that’d be disturbing. (And if it’s derogatory/slanderous, the author opens themselves up to a lawsuit too.) Normally I bend over backwards to NOT associate my stories with real people/buildings/etc. So, I’ll make up town names, or at least scramble the road/street name the homes are on to avoid the Goonies House effect. It’s a fine line, but as a viewer, I know I was irritated when a show like Dead Like Me films in Vancouver BC and tries to pass it off as Seattle… it broke the immersion because I knew it was off.

  35. Desiderius Price "I’ve learned to never say never when it comes to writing, usually because saying “never would” becomes an inducement to do just that." That's the absolute truth. It's because of that, I try to turn things I dislike, into challenges that broaden my imagination and world view. I also agree that writing about real people, is something that I would probably refrain from. However, with the rise of characters that are fictitious representations of real people, both directly and indirectly, there are even some shows, that I would rather avoid writing about, just because they toe, a palpably, unpopular grey line. For instance, I actually enjoyed the cartoon, The Prince, (I hate myself for admitting that), and I wanted to write a fan-fic to resolve it's cliffhanger ending. But I never wrote one, because I feel, that grey area, is essentially the same as writing about real people. And I'm not alone in the sentiment, that writing about characters who act as fictitious representations of real people, is essentially the same, as writing about those real people. I know that most people agree with me, since the decision to make prince George the main character of that show, was so overwhelmingly controversial, that the show's run, was ended, before the episodes were even aired.

  37. I want to wish a happiest of birthdays, to our magnificent @BronxWench May the day be wonderful and full of delight. And here’s to another full circle around the sun. All gifts in the form of shimmering gold and very sparsely clothed pretties that we may have in our possession, especially of the impish and the elvish variety, will be happily accepted. Gold will be kept, but pretties will be returned, unscathed and very exhausted.

  38. There are two options. If the character is central to the story, even if they die offstage, so to speak, I‘d recommend the Major Character Death (MCD) tag. If the character is not central to the story, you could use the Minor Character Death (MiCD) tag, to alert readers to the death of a character without having them pull their hair out over losing one of the stars of the canon.

  39. I read for plot more than sex, if I’m being very honest. I don’t care how much sex is in a story, or how early it appears, if the story’s plot doesn’t hook me. And that goes for fan fiction as well as original fiction. I think, reading as much here as I do, I’m somewhat jaded.

  40. The location of a tramp stamp is fairly specific, as @GeorgeGlass noted. In general, it’s placed so that wearing pants/skirts that fasten around the waist or even a bit lower would hide the tattoo. Wearing very low-rise pants would, however, reveal the tattoo, as would a bikini bathing suit, thong panties, and so on. I suppose one could use a tramp stamp as a sort of claim tattoo, but it seems odd that a man possessive enough to ink his woman with a claim mark would place it where she’d have to dress provocatively for it to show. It’s counter-intuitive, I’d think. “If you can see the crack of her ass, you can see she’s mine because the tattoo says so.” Unless, of course, his thing is to have her on display, in which case, go for it.

  41. Over the weekend I finished off a long term story and it feels really good. But it’s also weird because I’ve been working on this story for years and took a decade long break in between to write other stuff. Now I’m working on the next piece and I feel weird about just moving forward to the next story and working on new things. Anyone else feel this?

  42. I got into fanfiction (& writing) specifically due to the long hiatus between the potter releases… there was a three year gap between GoF & Ootp & subsequent books. So mine’s basically a “continue the story and speculate” type of story. Now that OotP & others have released, I do have more of canon to leverage (characters, places, etc), so I do that, however, plot wise, it’s still post GoF story, not Ootp or later. (And my story’s likely reaching the 1.4M mark tomorrow…. on my drive)

  44. Um… multiple locations (Ron had taken something to let him recover/reuse fast), which meant four separate sets of citations. The “cleaner” version of the story lets the reader construct the date from Harry listing the citations, while the “explicit” version shows the date details Thus for citations 3 & 4: “Ought to demand a refund,” Harry said, “Clearly an all–you–can–eat buffet should include a free banger.” “Aw,” Harry said, “Guess the opera didn’t appreciate you two climaxing at their climax.”

  48. It could be someone who gets together with a love interest, but there’s no firm commitment like a marriage or mating contract. It could be that whatever the Big Problem was has been resolved, and for the time being, at least, the MCs aren’t in any danger or at risk, and can canoodle happily until life rears its head and something nasty appears again. For most publishers, they would say it means the characters are happy at the end of the novel without any assurance that the happiness is going to last forever.
