  1. That moment you’re rewriting a death scene and realize you should remove all sugar bowls from the house, just in case the perp drops by for a visit…..

Sometimes when I write a death scene I start with a preface of dear future fbi agent I can tell the difference between IRL and fiction =p

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Not sure if that’d matter, if a FBI agent would read it how you’d want it read.  In this case, no google search is needed as it’s a rewrite, I already know the method & effects.

  2. This summarizes up today, though it omits the gaming distraction….

  3. Grr… I hate getting flame/troll reviews (on FF.net, not here)…

Emb3rSky283 is the penname (id 13561264), joined a year ago.  And this, from their bio, is telling.  “I have written on here under other pennames, but lost access to those accounts, usually by losing the account information“  means they’ve likely been kicked before.

Now, I did actually send FF.net’s support an email advising of this troll in case they try to do something else (ie, flagging stories for abuse in an attempt to get my account deleted).  Maybe it’ll help.  Of course, my best hope is the troll gets tired and moves along.

I’m not seeing that pen name in my archive membership, but I’ll keep an eye out.

  4. Note to self, I can’t keep adding inches to this character’s todger every time he visits the hospital wing!

    1. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

Not with that attitude you can’t =p

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

I do like to stay semi-realistic with sizes, so no forty feet (unless there’s a potion/spell involved).  A few inches is average, and this particular character’s still growing, so he’ll be above average when done.

  5. I’m annoyed because it feels like the only thing visiting my “clean” version of my fanfic on FF.net are bots stealing it – I post, and a half dozen bots lift it inside a day or two; at least one a day after that.  Feeling like I should simply abandon the clean version, and only pursue the explicit version on AO3.  That’d make writing easier, but also jerks around anybody still reading the clean.

Honestly, if I thought it would do any good, I’d say to file daily complaints with FFN. Is it being reposted elsewhere? Perhaps you can file complaints with those sites as well.

A google search later, some of the ghost mirrors (mostly), thinking they’re redirects for … countries with more restrictive internet policies.  Plus a (small) blurb on one hacked website.

But the aggravating part is simply that it drowns out the real readership numbers, because all I now see in the stats is bot after bot after bot slurping up 700k, no humans (about 300k of new material + 400k of the old yet-to-be-revised).   Until now, I had been trying to maintain  “explicit” vs “clean” versions, carefully marking up my story as I rewrite it (only way, TBH), close to a 3:1 word ratio; but if few to nobody is enjoying the clean, if they’re all enjoying the explicit, then it makes sense to not bother with the clean version given the extra hassle it takes.

  6. 246 years ago, today, was the Battle of Bunker Hill.

  7. Today, I’m annoyed due to a flakey internet connection.

  8. FIRST time somebody asks via comments if I’ll write a particular crossover between fandoms, I’m a tad annoyed, but I’ll politely decline.  SECOND time means they feel entitled if they can’t be bothered to read my reply to the first one – DELETE.  (BTW, it’s on AO3, so that button’s available to me.)

Wow...a button here on AFF to remove reviews on AO3!

As a software developer I am suitably impressed by the dragons that runs this place...

*sticks tongue out at @Thundercloud*  We have the ability to delete reviews here, which is not the most obvious feature, sadly. I just thought I’d do that educate folks thing we mods are supposed to do from time to time, to earn our, well, nothing, but you know…

  9. Bit of gunk on the monitor becomes a (derogatory) nickname to a character, funny how life goes.

  10. At what point must I stop calling my story “short”, a million words?

    1. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

A minimum of a billion words is short =p

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

What’s scary is that there are a couple of 2M+ harry potter fanfics on the other archive, and mine might join them – simple projection of pre-revision word count and the effect of my rewrite on it.  (ie, started with 500k, and my rewrite has transformed 100k into around 900k, so that’s potentially many millions of words, with LOTS of smut baked in).

  11. Bacon cheeseburgers fix everything!

  12. Remember, you’re here because your parents got frisky.  Sweet dreams!

    1. WillowDarkling

      WillowDarkling

What bothers me more is that my parents are here because both sets of my grandparents got frisky… and they had more kids than just my parents… so that’s a lot of frisky grandparents…

      Desiderius Price

Guess it depends on the age they did it at, but yeah, not letting my imagination go there, plenty to imagine  before that.

  13. You know, people just don’t see the point of invisibility.

  14. When the youtube video is “HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOOBS LOOK BIGGER | How To Contour Your Boobs”, I definitely had to watch that in full for research to make sure my character is properly accenting out hers in my story.

  15. Today I learned that apparently it’s legal to marry one’s first cousin in the UK (per a google search).

    1. JayDee

      JayDee

Hence the aristocracy’s similarity of appearance!

I kinda like how complex it is across the USA

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States

Like, Utah “ Only if both parties are 65 or older, or both are 55 or older with a district court finding of infertility of either party “

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

So, does that require bringing the court into the bedroom to prove infertility?

But, yeah, the USA tends to be complex due to the notion of dual-sovereignty, enshrined in the 10th amendment, as the laws vary from state to state.

  16. And today, my main potter fanfic turns 18 years old since the first chapter post, it’s an adult.  I swear I’ll finish it!

It’s on AO3, not here, due to being out-of-TOS here, and trying to fix it to be was a bit more drastic than I’d like.  I’ll PM the link.

  17. Sometimes, the title writes the story itself (from an advice column): “I’ve Been Having Hot Sex With My Boyfriend and His Brother--I don’t want it to end after lockdown.”

    1. InvidiaRed
    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

There wasn’t too much more to the column itself, from the poster.  Started off with the brother of the boyfriend moving in to the couple due to the pandemic, liaison started off in secret before cluing the boyfriend in, became double and she obviously enjoyed it.   Now that lockdown’s ending, the brother was going to move out, and the boyfriend didn’t want it to continue, downgrading the sex back to monogamy.  But there’s definitely a lot of material for a good short for anybody who wants that plot bunny.

  18. Think 4.2kwords is decent progress for a weekday.

    1. Thundercloud

      Thundercloud

Depends on how much you need to rewrite later...

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Well, technically, it *is* a rewrite, with enough new material to make the earlier versions seem like Cliff Notes.

  19. Always lovely, exercising the emergency generator option.

    1. JayDee
    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Well, it’s good I have the generator option, small thing, enough to keep the fridge & computer (or CPAP) running.  But sucks to go out in the middle of the night to have to fire it up – at least I don’t bother putting the extension cords away, so they’re easy to pull into the house & plug things into.

  20. New memo from the US dept of labor, that due to the covid pandemic and the need to “catch-back-up”, the next eleven days will be considered “Monday” for business/tax purposes.  Happy April First everybody!

  21. Got my first covid shot.  I’ll have a second opinion in four weeks.

Most people I know who’ve had the immunization didn’t have much reaction to their first shot. Reaction to the second shot varied substantially; I felt a little off for a day, my wife had a fever for 3 days.

      BronxWench

Part of me wants the strong response, and the sane part of me knows that I don’t get sick days.

      JayDee

My first shot just left me with a sore arm. With relatives dead from covid now I have zero tolerance for the anti-vaxx anti-mask bullshit.

  22. Poor Barron, having to watch his family getting evicted today from their home of the last four years.

    1. JayDee

      JayDee

...I thought they mostly lived in New York and Florida and only went to Washington when taking a break from golf?

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

That was like the only negative I could think of on EVICTION day.

  23. From those quotes you’ve likely never heard before: “Quite punctual, even showed up three days early to his execution!”

    1. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

“Typical, she didn’t even show up to her funeral on time.”

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Or, in reference to a crazy driver “late for their funeral”.
