Super Gardener, able to hear plants in distress.

I think there was a Tales of the Unexpected that had that as the plot once. This guy could hear his neighbours rose bushes screaming as they were pruned. Eventually, he took an axe to a massive old oak tree and deafened himself or something, after trying to convince people that he could hear plants were in pain. He was trying to record it, I think.
My mother reckons it’s some old drama/ tv play for today series we have on DVD. Forgot what it’s called.

What’s right? What’s wrong? It probably depends on the intended audience, to some degree. If there was a precise science to it, I’d have licked this ages ago, instead, I find it to be rather...fuzzy. (No, I do not mean a fetish there)
