  1. Actually, the disclaimer on this story is fine. It disclaims the fandoms by name, and clearly states that no profit is made...

  3. I'm really sorry that you're experiencing this sort of thing. Our admin staff are the ones who can really look into this properly, but I'd urge you not to take the ratings to heart too much. For me, at least, ratings don't affect whether or not I choose to read a story for enjoyment. I've clicked on some with many high ratings, and been completely disappointed. Others that may have no ratings have been gems. But yes, it does sting to see those low ratings, and I do understand. When it happens to me, I tend to view it as part of being a site moderator. That's what I tell myself, and I go right on writing.
  4. There is no requirement for a story to have adult content for it to be published on AFF. And yes, that is exactly why we have the "NoSex" tag. If a reader simply must have sex, then they should not read stories with a NoSex tag. Pretty simple!
  5. Lambda, isn't it? (Which sets off whole new chains of flashbacks...)
  6. Okay, so far the e-cigarette is working. I'm not smoking real cigarettes and I have no bodies to dispose of at the moment.

You could make the bodies entertain you with juggling or inline dancing. With Halloween coming others will think it's a really good costume.

  7. Gene Wolfe is utterly incredible and that book is simply breathtakingly good. And yes, he carries his narrative flawlessly in terms of his character's amnesia. Another writer who handles both POV changes and flashbacks wonderfully is Mary Doria Russell. The Sparrow and Children of God are among my favorite books ever.
  8. Review Responses for AFF Monthly Challenge Prompt for September 2011: Harrison Winter From Melrick: I'm the one who should be thanking you for setting up the monthly prompts! The various prompts were fun, and I really enjoyed working them all into the one submission. The haunted house story, well, let's just say I had a wildly misspent youth when it came to my reading choices. From JayDee: Thank you! I managed to avoid both elves and slash for once, and wound up with a succubus and a dead guy. Funny how that works out...
  9. Your stories are visible once again, and thank you.
  10. Both of the stories you list were hidden because they each contained an Author's Note as a chapter, with no additional story content. That is a violation of our Terms of Service and the associated Posting Guidelines. You received an email on 9/27/11 for each story at the email account associated with your AFF account detailing this information. Once you have removed the Author's Note chapter from each story, let us know and we can review the corrections and make the stories visible again.
  11. Unless of course you have brass balls...
  12. I guess if we bombard them with reports they act, if only to shut us up. Works for me, as long as they do the right thing.
  13. The story was removed from the site by the author.

  15. Really? Win8? Oh, fer feck's sake... That's a year of waiting for (a) Microshit to debug it and (b) everyone else to write drivers for it.
  16. Teengirl's still running XP. I'm the only one running Win7 so far... just call me a guinea pig and glue a carrot to my ass...
  17. ::nods:: Teengirl is on that as well, and she updated to 3.6.23 yesterday as well.
  18. I have an e-cigarette. Next week, I order the e-boi...

  19. So far 7 is behaving. Well, at least I haven't had the urge to choke the life out of it.
  20. Trying out 7 myself as we speak, and hoping that it's not unspeakable like 6...
  21. The POV markers are indeed just as annoying. We're actually being treated like we're unable to gather that the POV has changed, and I was well past the "POV For Dummies" stage when I was ten. If you feel the need to put something in case we've missed the obvious change in tone between characters, be creative. Put a date, or something equally probable, followed by just a name. It's still an interruption but not as jarring.
  22. Review Responses for AFF Challenge Prompt Lithium: Special of the Day From Apollo: Blame Neko for my obsession with Japanese men! It's a nice change from elves, though. And thank you! From Gslinger: Labs are sort of like restaurant kitchens... best not to know what goes on in there! And thank you! From JayDee: Oh, gods, that's fecking brilliant wordplay! I adore you! But thank you so much, and I'm glad I didn't overdo the meal references. You're so right, it's easy to get ham-handed and I re-read more times than I can count to try and catch that stuff. And oohh... sequel! ::watches Apollo cringe::
  23. Review responses for AFF Challenge Prompt Gamma: Almost Home From JayDee: Thank you! It's always fun to try something new, and I'm glad you enjoyed my little venture into space! From anesor: His raider was already damaged, hence the reason he did not survive, and he was locked onto the hull, so his ship could be scavenged for parts. Tierney, however, took a perfectly good raider with her...
  24. Flashbacks. They can be a wonderful way to bring in some back story, or illuminate a character's motivation or reasons for reacting a certain way. But I need to rant just a teensy bit... Flashbacks should not need to be announced. Please. It's disruptive, and drags me right out of the flow of a story. I'm reading along happily, and there it is. The clue-by-four, in all caps and bold lettering. FLASHBACK. Now I've come to a full stop, and I'm yanked right out of my immersion in the story, and that's not fun at all. If you've been using a regular font, italics can serve to highlight a flashback. Really. It's how it's generally handled in the books you buy in bookstores. Or set it off another way, if you've already reserved italics for characters talking to themselves and bold lettering for mental telepathy. But please... no great big warnings that we are entering the flashback zone.
