So, whilst at the lake, my laptop decided its hard drive was gone. Not that it was much of a laptop to begin with, but a braindead laptop is nothing more than a paperweight. Time to buy a nice new hard drive, and grumble a bit about annoyingly inconvenient technology...

A good backup plan should mitigate failures, which so far have been none with my SSDs but plenty with HDDs. Maybe it's my luck or something. Misbehaving OS, or the accidental reformat..been there, done that, and can't recall specifics because I try to block those things out.

It’s the opposite for me: I’ve had little trouble with HDDs but loads of trouble with SSDs failing. And anecdotal evidence suggests that’s not at all unusual.

My experience has been similar to Melrick’s experience. I rarely buy HDDs, but when I do, I tend to go for top of the line Western Digital. Seagate will always fail long before the expected date. The SSDs we’ve had have failed spectacularly on the daft one’s computers.
