  1. Yeah, I don't freak out about it, just don't really understand the appeal. I will agree though about the muscles. Personally, I don't like excessive muscle on anyone, men or women. I'm not even big on people being ripped. Maybe a bit too much staring at those muscle magazines in the supermarket check out aisles has given me a bit of a phobia :-) I find imperfections to be a lot more attractive.
  2. Personally, I like yaoi but have absolutely no interest in yuri. Not because I'm afraid to sexualize myself, but because I just don't see the appeal of two women together. Don't find it even slightly sexy. Add that to the fact that half the time I can't stand most of the female characters in stories/anime/manga/movies/tv show/etc. and that doubles my disinterest.
  3. You seem to be under the misapprehension that I do nothing. I've beta'd stories for several people, which I believe I mentioned before. But I still think you're being ridiculous. But if it pleases you to feel above everyone else because you don't 'bitch', fine.
  4. No I don't know what's going on in your life, but your comment implied that if you don't take the time out to help every single author who's got major grammar and spelling issues then you should never complain. Honestly, you're contradicting yourself now. I don't care who it is, but no one has that amount of time. There are too many stories, too many that have serious issues for any one person to help them all (not even accounting for, as you said yourself, those authors who refuse any and all criticism). It's ridiculous to act like a person should never say anything about something that is a serious issue in fanfiction.
  5. I will admit to not being completely sure what the first part of your first sentence has to do with the last part of it, maybe some situation I'm not aware of, but I'm of two minds on your post in general. Personally, I agree that appreciation does need to be shown for the work that they do voluntarily. BUT I'm also of a mind that being moderators is what they volunteered to do. That includes taking care of issues people might have and dealing with complaints. While people shouldn't complain about arbitrary nonsense, people with legitimate complaints and issues shouldn't be attacked because they are asking that these be addressed. Life isn't all about just smiling and nodding. But I do want to add a thank you to the mods on here, especially ones I've had personal dealings with (I'll add a shout out to Ezriee here). I've had some bad experiences with Aff.net mods in that past (who are no longer here), being extremely unprofessional and letting the power of the position go to their heads, so it's nice to see a good group of moderators in place.
  6. I'm sorry, but if you have the time to correct every story that has grammar/spelling issues, then you aren't as busy as you're trying to make yourself out to be.
  7. I know what you mean. I'm starting to move away from fanfiction a bit because it's starting to become more generally poorly written than I remember it being. I used to be able to find a lot more well-written stories than I'm finding these days. Now it's like 9 out of 10 stories I read are crap. And I've read some stories that were technically poorly written, but had a good plot and story behind it. But these stories are just all around bad. I honestly don't get how people like them. How people think they're the most amazing stories they've ever read ever. It stumps me. Yeah, I do know authors like that. But more and more these days, I'm encountering authors who think they're the bloody shit. And nothing you say, no matter how logical, phases them. I had one author, she wrote a Bleach story where Nnoitra was purified and 'reborn' in Soul Society. He retains his personality and decides he wants to become a soul reaper to destroy the ones who destroyed him, blah blah blah, so he joins the Academy. Ichigo dies and gets sent to Soul Society, where they decide he needs to go to the Academy because he doesn't know the basics (because of course it wouldn't be possible to just have one of the shinigami teach him that). Okay, I'm still reading at this point. Then she pairs the two... okay. And then she proceeds to make a big speech about how much stronger Nnoitra is than Ichigo and proceeds to show it repeatedly. Now if you've read or seen Bleach, I'm sure you can already see how stupid this is. Ichigo is a vizard AND on top of that has this freakish potential and rate of growth, but Nnoitra's been reborn as a shinigami alone (no hollow half any longer), but he's stronger. But then on top of that, his hollow half miraculously reappears and he becomes a vizard as well. And then when I point that out, she gets an attitude with me, telling me that I'm confused and that I make no sense. Seriously? And I'm encountering a lot of authors like that now. Give them perfectly logical concrit and they get attitudes. I had another author who could have used a beta badly and on top of the misspelled nearly every character name, place, ability, item from canon. And when I brought it up I was told that spelling doesn't matter as long as the reader knows what she means... I will admit to going off a bit after that one. But that kind of crap annoys me. Personally, though, I'm not going to praise someone to the heights if they don't deserve it. I think I'd just quicker not review at all, if I think constructive criticism might make the author quit but I'm curious of how the story is going to end. Sometimes though, I think something really needs to be said. I know a lot of people take a hands off approach to fanfics they don't like, but I really feel that if these people are allowed to continue putting out crap, then it's going to make it more and more difficult for fanfiction to continue. I've read interviews with authors who talk about refusing to allow fanfiction to be written because they don't want their characters to be slaughtered by horny, pre-pubescent, grammar-retarded tweens. These people are unfortunately becoming a majority in fanfiction and what people outside of it build their opinions of the entirety on. I feel like their crap is going to eventually make it hard for the quality to continue. Maybe I'm being a bit melodramatic... On another note, why are like 90% of Naruto/Bleach crossovers Harems. WTF? I was just browsing and Harem after Harem after Harem. It's ridiculous.
  8. I know. I've kind of been floating around from site to site trying to find decent stories, but at this point it's only once in a blue moon that I find a story that I actually love. More and more, the stories are just ridiculous. And not only are they ridiculous but hundreds of people clamber over themselves to kiss the asses of the people writing such crap, I just don't get it. I admit, usually I just move on, but when I get a story as bad as this, I just have to say something. It's just toooooooooooo bad. And you know what's sad, I just looked back at my review (I don't even remember what I wrote, just remember thinking that I shouldn't be too mean) and I saw a review telling the author to ignore the 2 reviewers before (never mind the fact that my name is clearly there and I'm clearly the same person), that the story was awesome. I just don't get it. Have our standards dropped that low?
  9. I've read some pretty stupid stories in my time in fanfiction (once read a story where HP decided to adopt Dobby as his son and Dobby started calling him Daddy, never mind that Dobby's probably older than he is. Among many other truly ridiculous things. And no, the story was not a parody. It was written seriously by a 30+ year old woman). But I think I just reached a whole new level of ridiculous with this Naruto/Bleach crossover I just read. And I just had to share: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5471083/1/A_Mo..._Life_and_Death I have a lot of morbid curiosity but having half of the captains and lieutenants of the Gotei 13 rolled up on the ground crying and puking because the horror of Naruto's lilfe was just too much for them to take... yeah, that killed it.
  10. You say that like it's easy. I've beta'd for several stories and I can tell you it's not easy, especially when an author decides to send you 60 pages worth of story and wants it back in a couple of days. Beta'ing is completely voluntary and we get nothing out of it. Until December I was a full time college student and not too long before that I had a job as well. During some points I didn't have the time or the energy to beta anything, much less a story that honestly needs a lot of work. Not even thinking about the authors who outright refuse to get betas. It's pretty absurd to imply that a person shouldn't comment on poor grammar, spelling, etc just because they don't have the time or even the inclination to be a beta.
  11. That explanation might work for a certain type of Mary Sue, though I don't really buy it, but personally I hate them all. The irritating self-inserts that are constantly in story, despite, supposedly, not being the main characters. There's one author who sticks her(self) in every story, and she's not especially perfect, just loud and loved by all despite the fact that she's loud. I'm guessing that the way the author is in real life, nobody can stand her, so she inserts into these stories, makes it so everyone loves her so she can feel better about being a pain in the ass. And then there are the perfectly tragic Mary-Sues. I don't think you can argue that someone is jealous of one of those, I don't any of us really wants to be raped/tortured/mutilated/abused etc. But the level of angst is just too much. Read a story like that recently, blech. That one character completely turned me off.
  12. I've pretty much just decided to avoid her as much as possible, 2nd author, except on those days when I'm feeling a little bitchy and she's perfect to annoy. I'd say she's harmless but in the process of figuring out how many accounts she has, I found that she attacks a lot of her readers, anyone who gives anything remotely resembling constructive criticism, even if it's layered under a lot of praise. So I'd say, free reign on screwing with the bitch. One person who responded to me actually sent me a copy of her review and a response she got to it: Review: I'm reading "Marriage Arrangements" and absolutely adore it. I honestly think it's a fantastic story. Um, my one suggestion, and it's JUST that: a suggestion, the use of 'then' 'than'. I also noticed 'bee' when it was supposed to be 'been' and a couple of other mistakes. Again, I do think that this is a fantastic storyline. I've never read anything where Lucius and Fred are a pairing and think it's quite brilliant. I love the writing style and I honestly felt so bad for Harry when he had to relive everything. I think your writing is wonderful and I plan on reading your other works. My only suggestion is to watch the grammar. I can't wait to finish reading "Marriage Arrangements". Response: HarrySnapeAlways May 29th, 3:54pm set your suggestions on fire and shove them as far up your ** as they can go, for that is the only place they belong. Grammar ** police like you have no business on a site like this, read a ** novel. This is an amateur site, no professional editors, go ** on someone else, or better still, on yourself Yeah, it is a pretty stupid argument. I think that it's just one for the lazy authors who don't want to put any actually effort into writing something that doesn't suck. I think after getting a few other responses who said they had the same experience, and my own, personally, I'm really not out to feel sorry for her anymore.
  13. The thing I find funniest in that is his comment about an unborn child definitely being an innocent. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Catholocism say that unless a child is baptized, they can't get into heaven. That they end up in purgatory (I'm pretty sure it's purgatory, I don't think it's Hell). Doesn't that contradict itself. If a child is perfectly innocent then shouldn't they be allowed in heaven? Or is the act of being a born a sin that they must be forgiven for? B)
  14. I'm all for expressing differing opinions, but talking about raping a nine-year old, getting her pregnant and ripping out the fetus so as to make her eat it... that doesn't sound like an opinion. I don't think anyone could take that as an opinion. That sounds like something aimed at just pissing off as many people as possible.
  15. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8...1883598,00.html I hope that even pro-lifers would be sickened by this. Though there was a discussion where one woman had this to say: And then tried to further defend herself with this: I don't think she gets that her situation and this girl's situation were completely different. And I find myself feeling quite sorry for her 'beautiful 13 yr old daughter', if her attitude is that if her daughter gets raped, despite being much too young, despite the potential emotional damage, despite the risks to her health, she'd force her to go through with the pregnancy anyways.
  16. Personally I like yaoi/slash, but I get where you're coming from completely. It's been driving me a bit nuts recently that I'm finding it harder and harder to find a story written by an author who's putting some effort into writing a quality story or one that isn't just smut, well-written or not. Personally there's only so many times and ways you can read some character getting screwed, I would like to read a nice quality story. And spelling/grammar is my biggest pet-peeve. How hard is it to use spell-check. Half of the mistakes I see would be taken care of by that, and even then you can get a beta. But I'm finding more and more there are a ton of authors who out and out REFUSE to get a beta. The post crap like, "Yeah I know my spelling sucks. It's not going to change, deal with it". There was one who said she refused to get a beta because she had low self-esteem issues and refused to accept any correcting her mistakes. What the hell? That's the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. Oh and let's not forget the 'authors' who don't even spell that characters names properly. If I read one more story where they call Tsunade Tsuande or UzUmaki Naruto UzAmaki Naruto, I'm going to go off. I had an issue with an author recently who'd written the stupidest damn story I think I've read in all my time in fandom. I have a pretty high level of pure morbid curiosity and often I'll keep reading just to see how badly the author can slaughter a story, but this was actually a story that I could not finish. I haven't had that happen to me in awhile. It was the most unrealistic, absurd steaming pile of horse crap (example: Harry adopts Dobby as his son and has him calling him Daddy) I'd pretty much ever read. All made worse by the fact that the author is 32. I'm sorry, but I think once a person is that age, they should stop writing like they're pre-pubescent, retarded teenage girls. I left a review about the complete and total lack of realism and she responds that it's fiction and she can do whatever she wants. Unfortunately that wasn't the first time I'd heard that crap. I think people think the fiction gives them license to do whatever the hell they want with no regards for realism, logic, canon, or anything. I know a lot of people say, if you don't like it don't read, but I truly feel that these morons who are allowed to post their garbage all over the place are creating a really bad impression of what fanfiction is and will ultimately lead to it's end.
  17. That sounds like the kind of dreams that I have. I usually don't remember that as distinctly so long after though. I also have these weird prophetic dreams, where it's just like normal life, things that i do normally, like sitting in class, though they usually always end strangely, like with some bursting in with a gun and shooting things up. And then like a month or a year or years later, whatever I've dreamed about will happen, though no guns blazing. I've actually had things happen recently that I remember dreaming about in elementary school. It's really weird.
  18. Have you ever reviewed a story about a complete a total lack of realism or logic and had an author respond by saying, "It's fiction. It doesn't have to make sense." It's ridiculous how many authors I've had say this to me recently and it's really starting to make me irritated. I don't think they realize that just because a story is based in a magical universe or a fantasy universe it doesn't mean that they can do whateeeeever they want. When they start contradicting themselves in their own stories, that's not good. When they starting writing crap like Harry adopting Dobby as a son, making his name Dobby Li Potter and having him call him Daddy, I'm sorry, that's just nonsense. And what's frustrating me is story's like this are almost all I can find, they might have good spelling and grammar but they're complete nonsense. Either that or they're really well-written smut. I don't hate smut, but how many ways can you read it. It's just not that interesting anymore. *sigh* And I keep running into this one author on ff.net. I don't know why but she has like 10 different accounts, pretending to be 10 different people. But her stories tend to all be very similar and when I called her on it, she responded to me on that account, then responded on an entirely new account. I just don't understand why a person would feel the need to do that, and pretend to be different people. I've for the most part learned how to spot her (or him, who knows, though she claimed to be pregnant in one of her responses), especially after she sends me a message of some kind. She's from Canada and usually has nothing on her profile. Though sometimes I run into her randomly, and bam, get drawn back into her little psycho world. It's starting to drive me nuts, and it's almost like there's no way to avoid her because she has so many damn accounts, under so many different names. I search for something and half the responses that come up are her in some form or another.
  19. I haven't seen half of the movies on that list :-) I went with Batman Forever, I think it was the best of the original Batman movies. I would have to pick LOTR as a close second. I loved all three of the movies, though the Two Towers was my favorite of the three.
  20. As sad as it is, I was expecting Farrah to go soon, especially with Ryan O'Neal talking about her being near her end. But Michael was a complete shock for me. I truly thought the person who first posted it was joking. RIP Michael and Farrah
  21. It happens. I think people do that because they feel it wins them the argument or maybe just to piss you off. And some are trolls themselves. I get called a troll quite often, mainly because my opinions tend to differ from the majority and I'm not afraid to speak my mind despite being in the minority. People don't tend to like that I guess. I wouldn't worry about it. For me, my pet peeve is people not knowing or acknowledging the difference between a flame and a negative constructive review. Anything that isn't butt kissing automatically becomes a flame and it drives me nuts. Personally, when I review, I don't tend to limit myself to 'OMG You are like so frikkin awesome. Your story's the best thing I've ever read' type reviews because really what's the point. Might stroke some ego, but does it really help a person improve as a writer. And I'm getting tired of being called a flamer because I point out the fact that an author could use a beta or that the plot could use a bit of work. Personally, I wish people could spread the word on what actually constitutes a flame because no one seems to know anymore.
  22. Actually I quit because of both. I quit reading the manga first because it started to annoy me. And then I decided, okay, I'll watch the anime, but then that started to annoy me too, especially when it caught up to the part of the manga that made me quit. So I just kind of gave up after that and decided to just vaguely keep track of the happenings. I'd have a lot of catching up to do at this point because I stopped at around the point where they partnered with Sai and found Sasuke and they decided to bring in this Uchiha's are so damn amazing they can even control the Kyuubi crap. That was it for me.
  23. Personally I don't find this unreasonable because often there is some in the back. Whether it had just come in delivery and hadn't been stocked yet or the shelf couldn't only hold so much and they had more in the back after the shelf got cleared, most of the time when I ask, which I will admit is rarely, the person going usually comes out with more. I don't think that makes a person a back customer to ask, to be honest, I think it makes you a little inconsiderate to those that did ask, since it's really not unreasonable to do so. I will say though, I actually did run into a case where a store was stock piling and hiding things away in the back. It was when my brothers and me decided to get my mom a laptop, we went to the store close by and they didn't have any, they checked on the computer and it said that the Hialeah store had like 30, so they called and confirmed. Drove up there and they lied and said they didn't have any. My brother got pissed, because Hialeah is REEEALLY far from where we live, and called the Best Buy 800 number and they checked in their records and saw that they did have some in stock. They called the store themselves and they again confirmed that they had laptops in store. Drove ALLLL the way back to Hialeah, a second time, and they again lied and said they didn't have any in stock. Wasn't until my brother got pissed and started cussing that they finally went in the back and brought one out. So yeah, stores do do that sometimes. You never know
  24. I don't. They managed to persecute and murder non-Christians for centuries, I'm sure they could do plenty of damage if they really tried.
