No, I meant Alicia Silverstone. For some reason, they couldn't remember Claire Danes but they could remember the balcony scene from Clueless.

That is so true! Popular Shakespearean plays have been re-made so often that there are way too many people out there who don't recognize a play in its original context any more. I remember when we were doing Romeo and Juliet in high school. The students were gob-smacked that there were no guns, the play took place in Italy, and that there was absolutely no mention of Leo DiCaprio or Alicia Silverstone. That was just so sad and so funny at the same time. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing an all-female cast performing The Two Gentlemen of Verona or Twelfth Night. Now that would be interesting.

Condoms from India to South Africa!
EveKnight75 replied to ZombieDuke's topic in News/Current Events
One thing I've noticed in India is that the poverty-stricken section of the population are "under-developed". They tend to be shorter and skinnier, and you can see that the women have smaller hips and are flat-chested. It only makes sense that the men would have smaller penises, too. If you study the non-poverty stricken section, such as the aristocracy and those living comfortably in clean villages, you'll probably find the men to be of average size, same as the women. Safe-sex campaigns in third-world countries are usually aimed at poorer villages and the workers who live in city squalor. If that's the section they base their studies on, it makes sense that they're getting these figures. I'd start citing the study my niece did (she's a self-admitted slut living in India and she's about 10 years older than me), but I don't see the scientific merit in that. -
The problem with Broadway is that the majority of the people who are actually willing to shell out the big bucks are the tourists, and the majority of them do it simply to say that they've seen a Broadway play, not because they have any knowledge or interest in theater. Meanwhile, the ones who really are interested in theater go to Carnegie Hall (Don't ask me why). I'm Indian, so I'm stuck in a room where a Bollywood movie is playing way more often than is preferable to my ears and mind. If you can manage to recount a time where you were stuck in an apartment where they were holding a Bollywood movie marathon or were stuck on a road-trip listening to Bollywood soundtracks for 10 hours straight, you'll have even more sympathy from me on the whole "high-pitched screeching coming from an abhorrent female passing as singing" bit. Long live Angela Lansbury! She is one of the few reminders we have from Broadway's hey-day.

First of all, you're in the wrong forum. This question belongs in Technical Issues and Questions/Fiction Site Issues. I'll answer your question anyway. There's a Challenges/Requests section in the Books archive. All you had to do was go to the Books archive, read through the sub-category list there carefully, and you would have found it right away. That makes me wonder just how hard you searched. Here is the article in the Resources section that tells you how to post a fic.

Yet another . Deciding on a certain angst/fluff ratio when writing a story seems rather formulaic to me. I don't decide this kind of thing ahead of time, and I don't try to ascertain a numeric ratio for genres when reading stories. It all depends on the story itself. Every good story has a little bit of different types of genres in different ratios. The real question is how appropriately a genre is being applied. For example, I don't want fluff in a rape scene or an over-angsty family picnic scene. It doesn't work. There's also so many different types of moods in a story outside of angst and fluff. I'm sorry, but I could never vote on something like this. I like light stories and dark stories. I like stories with variations in tone. I like dark comedies. There's so many different types of stories I like for different reasons, and I never could develop a preference for one tone over another. The weirdest part? Not even my mood can create a preference for a certain moment.

If length is a consideration factor when it comes to my reading mood, I just look at the number of chapters. More chapters means a lengthier fic. One chapter plus a completed tag means it's a one-shot. I don't really need more than that. If I click on a fic and the first 3-5 chapters are short, I know that the rest of the chapters will be like that. On FF, the word-count can also be quite misleading. There are times when a 20-chapter fic can have the same count as a one-shot because the one-shot is tedious and the multi-chaptered fic only has one paragraph per chapter. Extreme example but true. So I guess I'm fine without the word-count feature too. I also agree with Sam about the pissing contest issue that occurs way too often on the site.

WotanAnubis's Something-or-the-Other
EveKnight75 replied to WotanAnubis's topic in Personal Rants & Journals
Dear Wotan, Write the fic your brain demands of you. Once it has been written down, the plot bunny shall leave you alone. Now that the plot bunny is gone, destroy the fic. Your brain shall just have to deal with it because you have already done as it asked. EveKnight75 -
If we're going to go by the most general standards, then having sexual fantasies about other characters or people is not cheating on your partner. It's true that each couple sets different boundaries. It's also true that everyone has sexual fantasies whether or not they're in a relationship. For example, if you drool over a celebrity, in most cases your partner wouldn't really mind, because any rational person would be able to see it's just a fantasy and that nothing will happen. Reading adult fiction shouldn't count as cheating. If your partner knows about it and is uncomfortable with it, then maybe you should reconsider it, but only if the same standard is set the other way around. Even then, if your partner has serious issues with you simply reading erotic literature, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your relationship, because there are serious issues present there.

This had happened about 1-2 weeks ago. I sent the staff a memo and have received many sympathies. Now that I'm back, I'll share this story with you. The following is a copy of the memo I had sent out: Good ol' daz explained that the average person has an average of 4-6. Mine is a 6-9. This is a copy of the memo I sent out after coming back from the hospital.

There's a TOS there for public viewing but this isn't there. However, there's a separate agreement in the member's log-in area which states this.

Pagliacci is one of my favorites. I consider The Simpsons to be one long musical in itself. I wouldn't say that the musical episode is my favorite, but I do enjoy watching the characters break into song constantly (except maybe Marge). They've come up with some really catchy tunes throughout the years. Some of my favorites include See My Vest, The Spring in Springfield, The Fritz Schnackenpfefferhausen Bratwurst song, Who Needs the Kwik-e-Mart?, Tito Puente's Revenge, and One, Two, Tie Your Shoe. ETA: I also like the song New Orleans.

That may be the one part of the first review that I can't agree with and find plain offensive. Has s/he ever heard of "emo"? A lot of "dramatic" plays are headed in that direction, and they lack taste, intellect, and creativity. On the other hand, there are plays that center on a lighter and happier note, but they are far from simple. A true aficionado can appreciate both the darker and lighter side of the theater. This person apparently can't. A well-rounded person can appreciate old Broadway and music videos. Other than that, Webber is a hack. His version of "Phantom of the Opera" is completely fangirly. That's right - fangirly. I know that it's a word the reviewer wouldn't approve of, but I think s/he could appreciate the sentiment behind the adjective. Give me the original Phantom any night of the week. I'd rather watch a rape scene than tender love here, because it's just more appropriate.

What are your characters like and what kind of sexual background do they have? That's the point you need to start working from. If neither of them have any gay experience and neither one is overly bold by nature, start off with platonic action (at least, according to females), such as hugging, massages, dancing together, etc. Work your way up to stuff like nearly unnoticeable fondling during a hug, tense atmospheres, kisses on the forehead or cheek, etc. If one of them works up some courage, throw in a kissing scene (tongue is optional but I don't recommend it), but don't make it a make-out scene within the same go. My first female partner was very shy and uncomfortable with PDA, so I'm talking from real experience here. Of course, I was much bolder If you want something racier, let me know and I'll see what advice I can give on that front.

I'm trying to write two versions of the same fic for two fics. Right now, they're both rated M, but I'm trying to bring down the rating at FF to a T to appeal to a wider audience, and I'm trying to bring up the rating at AFF for the same reason. It has been really hard to write two different versions of the same chapter while making sure that they remain recognizable as the same story and don't go off on different tangents.

I stumbled upon Buffy smutfics on the web when I was 14. Didn't really get access to the mags. Do music videos count as exposure to porn? I've seen a lot of x-rated movies and a lot of NC-17 from countries like Mexico, Spain, and France. For some reason, they don't affect me. Visuals don't seem to have an arousing effect on me. Hell, they don't have any visible effect on me. My friends have noticed that and two of them seem to be put off by it. The rest of them just kind of shrug at it and say "She writes erotica and she does research. She's probably so used to it that it bores her." That's not exactly it, but I don't correct them. I'm actually turned off by magazines. I'm not the type to like artificial-looking girls. I like curvy and pretty so long as it looks natural. I'm not offended by mags, but I don't enjoy them. I like sex toys, and I enjoy reading erotica. The only visuals that appeal to me have some higher aesthetic purpose, but even then there's no arousal. I do think girls should be exposed to sex stuff at the same age as guys, but I don't think that magazines are the right approach. Erotic literature might be the better approach. The problem with most magazines is that they don't cater to women. If anything, lesbian pics and vids are the worst because they're made for men instead of lesbians. Depending on the way the girl thinks, you could give her gay male porn plus a PlayGirl thrown into the mix and she'll get a good laugh out of it. If it were up to me, I'd have the same package for both guys and girls: one gay male, one lesbian (that appeals to lesbians), one straight for males, one straight for females, lubricant, a basic sex toy, and two finer works of erotic literature. No DVD because I consider that the next step. I think a package with variety would allow the person to develop preferences more fully by knowing what's out there.

Poll's been edited. That green sentence in the first post is not mine. Speaking of which, green belongs to me, ya hear? You've just incurred the mod's wrath! I'm just kidding... but the green sentence in the first post is still not mine. I haven't voted because I have several WIPs where the fics have yet to be posted. I have three WIPS posted on AFF at the moment. Two haven't been updated in about a year, but I'm proofreading the next chapter for one, am in the middle of writing two versions of the next chapter for another (it's on FF so I need a censored version), and am stuck in a block for another because there's only so much I can do when it comes to specific architectural details (it's supposed to be a big joke because it's a Brady Bunch fic). On top of that, I am nearly done co-writing a concrit article (there's a thread here on that), and there's four fics waiting in the wings. One of them is a sequel for someone else's fic, one is a cross-over, one is an HP which I'll modify after the final book has been out for a while, and the fourth is supposed to show a contrast in my writing abilities within one of my fandoms. The thing is, I can multi-task on fics, but only up to a point. I don't want to leave up too many WIPs on the site at one time. I'll work on the fics that are up at this point. Once I manage to make a lot of regular progress on at least two, I'll consider posting another fic on the site, but only if there's a lot of progress on it already. So the reason I haven't voted is because you'd get a different number based on how you want to pose the question. If it's WIPs on the site, the answer is 3. If it's all WIPs, then the answer is 7 (not counting the article). I think that if you manage to read the entire post up to this point, you'll have some idea of what my answer is. I do have a lot of ideas jumping around in my head, but I control it to an extent. I am a slow updater and I admit it. Still, I don't abandon any fic. It takes me forever, but rest assured every fic will be completed. I'm the tortoise in the race. Slow and steady gets it done. It's a pain for the readers, but I give them quality and many appreciate waiting for that. Perhaps not the best way to approach WIPs, but it's effective and the end result can be worth it provided you don't lose interest in the fic permanently.

In the Megan Consoer thread, Yhitzak brought up a good question that I think would make for a a good topic here. How do you review a fic? Everyone goes around reviewing fics in a different manner. Do you review every fic or just the ones that leave an impression? Do you review only to give advice? Do you tend to be brief or lengthy with your reviews? What kind of tone do you usually have? What do your reviews usually revolve around? The list of questions could go on forever. What is your personal reviewing style? Don't be afraid to be honest. We have a pretty good idea of what type of review you like to receive (plenty of threads about that), but we haven't really touched upon this side of things. --------------- I don't review very often. In turn, I don't complain about receiving a small number of reviews. I don't want to leave one-liners or irrelevant reviews because it's just not me. When I review, I want it to be well-rounded. That shouldn't come as a surprise to you. I don't post comments on threads too often, but when I do post it's lengthy and detailed but relevant. My reviewing style is the same. I try to say something about every fic I read but that's just not possible for me and there are times I feel slightly guilty about it. Then again, I remember the golden rule. I myself prefer concrit, so that's what I give out. Don't get me wrong - I do try to appreciate the one-liners, but you reach a certain point where "OMG I luv it PLS update!" just grates on your nerves. There are times when I consider re-thinking my reviewing style but then I receive a PM from someone. On FF, whenever I leave a review on a fic, I almost always end up getting a PM starting off with a huge THANK YOU! These people find it refreshing to read a lengthy, well-rounded review which touches on several different aspects of their fic. They like the fact that there's someone out there who puts that much care into a review and gives them more insight into their own fics and writing style. It's a nice change of pace from the one-liner. I love receiving those PMs. I also like the PMs where members personally ask me to review their fics after reading a review of mine on another person's fic in the same fandom. It's a great pick-me-up. It helps me realize that there's honestly nothing wrong with my reviewing style. I may leave few reviews, but I make every review truly count and it shows.

I had nearly forgotten about this thread. It's just been resurrected for the first time since this forum was created. I've cleaned up this thread by deleting a few of the earlier posts and have also split this topic. The other thread is here. I know the other thread may come off as petty, but half of the posts here followed that tangent and I just couldn't bring myself to delete all of that. Besides, I know what it's like to want to kill a reviewer. Yhitzak, I would explain the relevancy of this thread to you, but I think the others have it covered. As it is, I've read Megan Consoer's reviews before. Thankfully, I don't receive them (a fortunate side-effect of dabbling in smaller fandoms). Still, I know I wouldn't want to receive them if I ever post an HP fic, so my sympathy goes out to the rest of you.

I've already told you, I don't have a soul and I like being spanked... It looks like someone changed it again after me. I was fully awake and sober when I changed it to spanking soul-stealer. Whoever did it wanted to play around with it to change the meaning. What have I started? I should've known... the same thing happened when I called Knorg a Pedantic Prick.
-
That comma kinda changed the meaning of the title so I went back and changed it to the way I had originally put it. Consider that my confession.
-
If you think you already have the soul, then why not spank every soul in your possession as it is? If the soul's already yours, you'll have punished it. If not, you'll have the satisfaction of venting some of your anger. Now for the investigation.... who here already knew you were a "spanking soul-stealer" before you got the title? You can whittle it down to those few suspects. Personally, I kinda like the title. It has a nice ring to it. I don't have a soul and I like being spanked, so I'm not worried.
-
Merci beaucoup, PommeFolle! You can borrow that line as long as you remember to credit me for it. There's multiple translations, but I was aiming for "torture devices to the dungeon bedchamber". I like "torture tools" better, but "dungeon bedchamber" has a more poetic ring to it. "Cochot" is prison and "donjon" is dungeon, but they're synonyms and "chambre à coucher de cachot" just rolls of the tongue much more nicely than "chambre à coucher de donjon", doesn't it? I realize that everyone would have language problems. I'm no exception. I don't have much of an arsenal when it comes to talking dirty. You guys were already starting something here in French, so I thought "why not?" I guess we can make it an experiment of sorts. I don't think it could ever reach orgy fame precisely because we're anglophones. BTW, you not only called Sam your big bear, you called him your big female bear. The form of the possessive changes according to the possession, not the possessor.
-
I've already replied to the original post, so there!

NinjaGajin, this is precisely why I've changed the topic title and thread. The OP was asking for advice when it came to a change of pace in writing sex scenes for rape-fics which have some fluff in them. It quickly evolved into something else. HardyKitty: StoryJunkie is the official stealer of souls on this forum. If you are truly a minor, she shall steal yours then torture it. I kid you not. However, if your e-mail address and b-day are truly valid, you're safe. Besides, you have the attitude of a mature adult, so I'll give you the benefit of a doubt and hold Orochimaru back... for now.
