JayDee Posted June 29, 2018 Report Posted June 29, 2018 (edited) I’m not posting links ‘cos this isn’t a review whore thread. As most of what I write is one shots I am used to getting one or two reviews a story, with the odd one getting more and the multiparters occasionally getting 20+ Given my often niche subject matter not a big suprise! Anyway, I got to thinking about hits vs reviews – I have a story with 60K plus hits and considerably less reviews, but also I have a few stories with no reviews at all. And I wondered if it was worth looking at them to see if there’s any specific reason why they didn’t get even the pity reviews so many of my others got! So in order of dragon prints these are: Games > Fallout > No Mercy in Novac - Dragon Prints : 15278 15K reviews. Even with this likely representing one or two masturbators revisiting a few times, it’s quite a lot of people who’ve been interested enough in the fandom and the summary with it’s promised “gang of horny rapists” to click, but then haven’t liked or hated it enough to leave a comment. My strong suspicion with this one is that a lot of them have seen the note that this is a re-write of one of my earlier stories and either didn’t want to try again, or understandably felt this was a likely sign of poor quality hack work to salvage the porn scenes of 2007 JayDee. Games > Mortal Kombat > Sindel's Lullaby - Dragon Prints : 7000 I suspect that what happened here was the many readers who liked “Shokan Lust” didn’t pay close enough attention to the codes/description on this very different story, realised what they were getting after clicking and noped the fuck out. 7K though. Harry Potter > Crossovers > Nightmare at Hogwarts - Dragon Prints : 5798 This is my only HP fandom fic to get zero reviews, and for getting reviews HP fandom used to be like shooting fish in a barrel. You could literally write a necrophile sex dwarf and people would give it an honest appraisal. The only reason this one has so many dragon prints is because it’s been on AFF since I started re-loading my stories on AFF in 2007 after taking them down that first time (and accidentally not saving that hot Kate/Dad Angel fic I wrote. I’m a dumb fucker). So I think the reason for no reviews is niche appeal, less popular character, Het content, teen version of old character, and Freddy not being Freddy enough. S’a piece of shit story tbh. Cartoons > Josie and the Pussycats > Just A Cat - Dragon Prints : 3925 I thought this’n did have reviews tbh. Maybe the user’s content was deleted? Anyway, kind’ve a cheat to include since while it has no review on AFF it did get reviewed as part of “Fanfiction Friday” on the old Topless Robot site, and numerous reader comments that quite failed to understand it wasn’t intended as a serious literary heavyweight work, but just a 70s cartoon Afro-American woman with a penis nailing a white dude. Because that shit’s hot. Shut up. It is. 0 onsite reviews can’t be wro… fuck. FWIW this is probably one of my better unreviewed stories, but it is a fairly small fandom and dickgirl-on-male is not everybody’s cup of spunk. Movies > Southland Tales (2006) > Nobody Now Dragon - Prints : 2984 Movie that tanked at the box office, and didn’t make a whole lot of sense even when you read the prequel comics but still had some fun scenes and and dialogue and folks playin’ the roles. So on that basis, and the very niche amputee fetish, not surprised it didn’t get a lot of folks who looked at it happy to leave even an anon review. Another one of the batch of stories I re-wrote to be about a fanwork, although the original one wasn’t actually posted anywhere – they rejected it at CSSA which must take some doing. Games > Viewtiful Joe > Hulk Davidson has Sylvia for Dinner - Dragon Prints : 2726 A vore request/story exchange I did for a fandom I knew sweet FA about, so it probably scores poorly for being a lesser known Capcom property, not being especially close in character to the actual property, and featuring people eating. Cartoons > Extreme Ghostbusters > The Goth and The Goatherd - Dragon Prints : 2028 Not all of my re-write attempts were very good. Shoehorning this one into EGB didn’t really work. Not surprised at the low hits or low reviews – again, lesser popular fandom and niche content. Games > REsident Evil > Control Takes Jill - Dragon Prints : 1565 Niche content, but big fandom where folks usually don’t mind violent rapey gory stories. I guess It was just wrong place, wrong time. Not my best work as I was having a hard time writing anything at the time, and then forgot to post it here for ages (was a request topic fic I wrote as a reward for another forum’s thread) Just one of those things. Originals > Fucking Halloween Party Dragon Prints : 1267 Since Reviewed! (That you reviewer!) There’s some nice sex in this one and again actually cheating to be here – it did get reviewed when originally posted as part of the Halloween special multithread, but I wanted it on my own profile to keep alla the character stories together, and 1200+ people checked it out and didn’t really care either way! I certainly am not suprised of my four stories with no reviews and low dragon prints two are originals because that’s a harder sell outside of specific topics anyway. Maybe shoulda gone for “Cocky Succubus’ Halloween Party” Games > Elder Scrolls Oblivion > Decorative Destruction - Dragon Prints : 991 Someone wanted Jar Jar Binks to go to the Elder Srolls universe and rape a specific NPC with a tiny part in the game. I owed them a story and wrote it. Readers saw Jar Jar and scrolled the fuck down. I expect it’s 900 Star Wars bot searches. Weird idea. Had some nice descriptions I think, but I haven’t been back to check. Games > Elder Scrolls Morrowind > The Orc's Weapon - Dragon Prints : 619 It’s got NoSex tag, and features a character from an older game and, well, I liked it but I can see why it didn’t take off. Was a sequel to my better written Friendship’s Gift in a way. Originals > The Man in the Tree Dragon Prints : 602 Since Reviewed! (Thank you reviewer!) I did 52 prompts, one a week, for a year. This was the week I couldn’t think of any goddamn thing worth a shit and so crapped this out. It’s deservedly forgotten to the point I didn’t remember it until I saw it. ...I started with the most dragon prints stories to be positives. Anyway, that’s my Unreviewed. How’s about y’all? Desiderius Price Posted June 29, 2018 Report Posted June 29, 2018 I’ve got nothing above single digits. Two are unreviewed: Originals > Fiends Originals > Dolbourne Chronicles Both are WIP, haven’t been updated in a while, so that’s understandable, and flooded with tags. I’ve been moving insignificant tags into the story itself so it’s less daunting to the prospective reader (they still get full disclosure at the top of the story). And yeah, some of mine have minor1, so that’s a detractor too. What I have been doing is recording my dragon prints, so I use that as a proxy for interest in the stories. JayDee 1 Quote
JayDee Posted June 30, 2018 Author Report Posted June 30, 2018 I suspect Minor1 is one of those tags like Rape that a large portion of readers understandibly actively avoid and a small portion actively look for. Some of the tags will get readers for a fandom or original topic about which they know/care little just because the fetish/kink/straight up mental sickness (Hello ABDL! I kid, I kid!) is the most important element to them. Though, weirdly, they’re often more likely to review to plead for more of said fetish sometimes in fandom they do know better, “Wow I really loved seeing your OC Mike wearing that pair of Depends, have you ever thought of how Batman must use something similar?” etc etc Than click and skip by unreviewed. Recording the dragon prints like that sounds like a good idea, but I suspect I might find it a bit depressing if I tried it with mine. BronxWench 1 Quote
CloverReef Posted June 30, 2018 Report Posted June 30, 2018 I’m not nearly as prolific as a lot of writers, and most of what I write never sees the light of day, so my unreviewed things were years ago, and I took them down because of the lack of interest. Though I do have a recent one where I got just one review that pretty much just sounded confused, so I don’t know if that counts, lol. I’m not sure why readers are more vocal about some stories than others. I mean, sometimes I think that they’re less vocal about the more masturbatory stories because they just cum and go, but then I stumble upon smutfests with hundreds or thousands of reviews and it blows my theory out of the water. More often than not, the stories I see getting very little attention are among the better written. Maybe they don’t cater to the particular audience here? But that wouldn’t explain the mass of dragon prints some of these unreviewed stories collect. Maybe it’s just not cool to support authors anymore? I don’t know. It drives me crazy. You guys are awesome writers. I personally think I’m a fucking awesome writer, and even if we weren’t, the time and energy we put into crafting free content certainly deserves a word or two. And I find that for every line I attempt to draw in the sand, I’ll eventually cross. I will qualify tags, if appropriate, because I do tend to overtag (ie, minor1 even if it’s just nudity w/o sexual activity, or, alternatively, exposure to adults doing the deed). Since I record the dragon prints, I know Jefferey’s count goes up several hundred between episode posts, so I suspect I’ve got some readers despite just having two reviews. 46 minutes ago, CloverReef said: I’m not nearly as prolific as a lot of writers, and most of what I write never sees the light of day, so my unreviewed things were years ago, and I took them down because of the lack of interest. Generally, I try to refrain from pulling, even earlier works. There are fanfics I’ll go back and re-read from time to time, and even though I do start to realize how...well, with experience, quality, I do appreciate being able to re-read them. I’ve considered going back and rewriting my first potter fanfic, because I’m sure I could do a better job today, but I think it’d lose some of the charm for it having been my first, so I plan to leave as it is, warts and all. And thanks for that endorsement… reviews are always appreciated BronxWench, JayDee and Arian-Sinclair 3 Quote

JayDee Posted June 30, 2018 Author Report Posted June 30, 2018 Full listing? I’m in…. Well I’m not, I’ve got 100+ of the fucking things. I don’t have all week. Samahlen (combined one-shots): 22260 / 105 – Now this is a good story. Literally so good it got me to play a game that I then loved and wrote a bit of fanfic for myself. [off topic] Alistair should totally have been a male warden romance option. And Morrigan a female warden option. And Dog for both of… Ok, ok, I’ll shut up now[/off topic] I respect that. I guess I get squirrelly at the thought of someone’s first impression of my writing being something I’m not 100% proud of. That kind’ve sums up alla my writing to be honest… Nothing’s perfect! Multiparters definitely seem to have more chance of picking up reviews. And, yep, genre definitely makes a differene. That’s sort of the point I was making with the HP stories I have – some of them are really bad and some are kinda ok to good, but there’s only one of them that never got a review. Even that unfinished scat fic I wrote got reviews and that was just me being vulgar. As for story pulling: I pulled all my Real Person Fic stories years ago from AFF, but have re-written and expanded some of them to be about non real folks. I also have a few stories – some of drabble or micro fic length – that I’ve never really put up on AFF for one reason or another. The reason I pulled all my early JD stuff originally in like 2006 I can’t fully remember now. 12 years ago! I think one of the old mods said or did something that irritated me. This was pre-current forum days, I think, though possibly after… was it yahoo group? There was that AFF livejournal for a bit too... For my old username I took ‘em all down because of the one username rule, and because some real world folks saw some of my writing, but later on I asked DemonGoddess and she said it was ok to have my old username stories under my old username so I re-loaded some of the best of them. Probably coulda stuck a few more up but I doubt I will now. Maybe one of these days. BronxWench, CloverReef and Arian-Sinclair 3 Quote

Though, my Dale’s Game does have the main characters as gay (in a homophobic world), so if you’ve not read it @CloverReef, feel free to read and review it I am planning a sequel and it does have a short prequel in the 2016 holiday stories. For me, by relaxing the requirement for perfection, it lets me actually post, and posted material is much better than holding out for “perfect”. When I wrote The Repair Guy, I deliberately experimented by going for short chapters and one-pass proofreading; the result was, I finished that story in a couple of months, not years, and I’m overall happy with how it turned out. GeorgeGlass Posted July 1, 2018 Report Posted July 1, 2018 Like JayDee, I have an awful lot of stories posted, so I’m just going to list the ones that have received no reviews. Fanfics:Cartoons > Phineas and Ferb > The More, the Merrier - Dragon Prints : 1800 I’ve only posted 1 chapter of this so far, and said chapter is pretty much all setup, so I’m not completely surprised that there are no reviews yet. Cartoons > Mighty Magiswords > The Princess Hire-ees - Dragon Prints : 683 I’m guessing that Mighty Magiswords doesn’t have anywhere near as large a fan base as the other fandoms in which I write. Cartoons > ThunderCats > Brides of Evil - Dragon Prints : 8317 I’ll be honest: This fic just isn’t very good. I co-wrote it with somebody on Inkbunny; our collaboration wasn’t a great experience for me and did not result in a great fic. Originals:Erotica > Het - Male/Female > Little Rose - Dragon Prints : 2750 This story is only 1 chapter in, so I’m not too surprised by the lack of reviews thus far. Erotica > Het - Male/Female > Curfew - Dragon Prints : 7106 Now this one’s lack of reviews surprises me. This story, about a young woman who is raped by a pack of specially trained dogs, was partly inspired by the popularity of one of my earlier stories, “Caitlyn’s Punishment,” which was about a woman whose sadistic husband forces her to have sex with a series of animals. (That story has 13 reviews, which is by far the most that any of my original stories have garnered.) Maybe the appeal of that “Caitlyn’s Punishment” had more to do with the sadistic husband than the animals, I don’t know. Erotica > General > Pony Dearest - Dragon Prints : 6120 I'm not totally surprised about this one. My furry stories don't tend to be big hits on AFF (unlike Inkbunny, which is exclusively for the furry crowd). What is more, although this is a story about anthropomorphic ponies, it's not an MLP story, so it may not appeal to a wide audience. Original - Misc > General > A Perfect Mismatch - Dragon Prints : 2661 Well, it turns out y’all did me a favor by inspiring me to make this list, because in doing so, I realize that I put this story in the wrong place: “Original – Misc” instead of “Erotica.” I have just moved it. In any case, this story is part of an anthology series titled "Tales from the Glory Wormhole." Although authors can post their stories anywhere, the “hub” for the story is located on Hentai Foundry, where people can read the intro to each story and then click a link to go to the story itself. So reviews get posted on HF and not AFF. Erotica > Het - Male/Female > Dear Hazel - Dragon Prints : 3750 This story takes the form of a letter written by a man to the woman he desires. For that reason, nothing actually happens in this story, and maybe that’s why it hasn’t attracted any reviews. Erotica > Het - Male/Female > The Small Hours - Dragon Prints : 13625 Underage furry incest PWP clearly draws readers, but maybe not the reviewin’ kind. Also, it’s a very short story, so maybe people don’t feel like the time they spent reading it justifies writing a review. Poetry > Free Verse > Twins: An Incest Poem - Dragon Prints : 4941 If anything is less likely to attract reviews than underage furry incest PWP, it’s probably underage incest free-verse poetry. Erotica > FemSlash - Female/Female > The Single Mothers' Support Group - Dragon Prints : 24128 Erotica > Het - Male/Female > Keene's Really Good Week - Dragon Prints : 24042 Erotica > General > The Playground - Dragon Prints : 12998 All three of the above stories are furry stories, so there we are. Erotica > Threesomes/Moresomes > Satisfaction - Dragon Prints : 24595 I’ll confess that I’m disappointed by this one’s lack of reviews. I think it’s some of my best work in the feel-good incest genre. Erotica > Het - Male/Female > A Day at the Beach - Dragon Prints : 59977 More underage incest getting plenty of hits but no reviews. Erotica > Het - Male/Female > Everything She Needs - Dragon Prints : 20904 This one I understand, because it’s a sequel (to a story titled "Wild Side"), and sequels are never as popular as the original. (The exception is when the sequel has the word “Daddy” in the title and the original does not.) CloverReef, JayDee, BronxWench and 1 other 4 Quote

Unless, you know, it is a subliminal message for neo-nazis in which case, um, you’d probably want to leave it. I guess. I see a lot of your unreviewed are also originals. Obviously this here is AdultFanFiction rather than AdultFictionPress and I sometimes feel that the original stories are something some readers are less likely to look for. The site analytics may prove that wrong though! Just thoughts as they occured on some of yours! Mighty Magiswords – No joke, I’ve literally never heard of this fandom. Generally if something from America doesn’t take off/even get released in my third world country I usually hear about the bigger pop culture stuff through internet discussions, but not this’n. So, yeah, I could see how it’s a less popular fandom! Brides of Evil – I can see where you are coming from. My one and only erotic fiction co-writing attempt was also kinda a bad experience. I basically did 95% of the work, the other person did 3%, 2% didn’t get done at all and they reposted it. I may strip out their contributions sometime, but leave an original idea credit (their contributions were literally the original suggestion of people to use – RPF – and a few lines near the end, most everything else was me) and re-do it as a fanwork. I found it a lot easier to take requests/prompts/challenges and then show a first draft to the person who made ‘em to see if there’s anything they’d like me to add, remove or modify. Much more satisfying experience. On the other hand, years ago I used to do play-by-post non-adult roleplay and that was quite fun. Huh. Curfew – That’s definitely a topic with a bit of a fanbase on AFF. I’ll add it to my “to Read and review as soon as I have more time” list, because reasons. Dear Hazel – Some stories in letter format have been very popular over the years, but I could see how it might be a tough sell. The Small Hours – I think it can be similar with some of the gory stories. There is definitely a reader base, but a lot of them dont want to leave a record they liked it or something. Also, at least with the gore fans, there’s a percentage of incredibly self centred and cruel folk who read them who aren’t disposed to review. Not so sure if that also applies to the kinks here. Satisfaction – feel good incest also appears to be the leading porn type at the moment, based on the number of folks on reddit complaining how they have trouble finding videos with anything else. A Day at the Beach – nearly 60K hits and no reviews is just plain rude. I can’t help ya with that one though. Thanks to you, and everyone else, for the thread contributions! I think you’re right about this one having had reviews, because I vaguely remember reviewing it. I might have made some comparison between your version of Valerie and Foxy Brown. 11 hours ago, JayDee said: Mighty Magiswords – No joke, I’ve literally never heard of this fandom. So, yeah, I could see how it’s a less popular fandom! It’s actually a really fun little show, about a brother-sister team of professional adventurers. (One of its working titles was Dungeons and Dayjobs). It started life as an internet cartoon; you can find a bunch of the shorts on YouTube. Clearly, I need to spend some time on Reddit. 9 hours ago, Desiderius Price said: 88? (88 is apparently used by some neo-Nazis as a code for “Heil Hitler,” because H is the 8th letter of the alphabet.) And JayDee, thanks so much for reviewing “Curfew”! JayDee Posted July 1, 2018 Author Report Posted July 1, 2018 I think you might have reviewed Just a Cat when I still had a HF account! Would have lost all the reviews I both received and made when I deleted it. And no problem! Curfew is a great little story, and hopefully story 89 is just as good! I was keying off the word “nazis”, not 88. Speaking of 88, the daughter of Heinrich Himmler recently died at the age of 88. Arian-Sinclair 1 Quote

Happens more and more as I get closer to middle age. 6 hours ago, Anon said: This made me interested in my own ratios which I’d never really thought of 24272 DP/3 Reviews 2149 DP/2 Reviews 3177 DP/2 Reviews It’s cool there’ve been even a handful of people who’ve actually read my stories through and left a comment. The latter two in the loose trilogy are the only stories in their sections for what must be pretty niche shows to write on. I remember having to request sections be made for them thanks to the ever-accommodating and cool staff/admin of adult-fanfic. Each one has a laundry list of tags and content that likely stop viewers at the door since they’re very much stories where you’re either on the train for the full ride or you see where the train is destined right from the start and say “No thank you” to boarding in the first place. The latest reviews are from years ago now, but I think the explanation for a lot of stories in general getting little to no reviews is just that I’d guess that most of the site’s general traffic isn’t avid readers itching for a narrative with a side of fapping, it’s more people who browse for a hot read and then close the tab when its served its purpose. Analyzing why one story has gotten reviewed and another hasn’t really could just be as simple as most people simply not being the “review a story I masturbated to” type. MAYBE the hotter the story, the less reviews because people don’t even make it to the end before “losing interest”? With older stories at least, unless someone goes looking for a specific fetish or specific fandom (and not even then if it’s a very popular fandom with a ton of stories) people just aren’t going to see them as they are with the latest update stories. I’ve had a couple cases where an old story suddenly started getting reviews again, but both were because of them being linked/referenced elsewhere by somone else delving more deeply and greedily than usual (Thanks JRRT) in the archives. I suspect you’re right that readers who don’t finish a story are less likely to review it too, but not just because of hotness, but also when they don’t like it – While I almost always review stuff I’ve read and liked, even if I didn’t finish reading it, if I’ve hated something/can’t think of any positives/didn’t get far ‘cos it sucked, I’m much less likely to leave a review because pure negativity with nothing contructive is no use to a writer*, and I am not great at constructive criticism. Plus, “Christ, this is fucking dull, I’ve had more fun reading the bleach bottle while sat on the shitter, Ms E L James” is probably pretty subjective. *I mean, most writers. I used to love getting to share the non-story-reviewing flames in the old flames thread before having to delete them on account of the site’s no flames rules.
