EveKnight75 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 The new Godawful Fanfiction forums are finally up and running. GAFF is where people go to spork badfics. Please remember to bring brain bleach with you when visiting - just in case. Speaking of GAFF, has anyone come up with any ideas for perfecting Uber-Vole yet? I want to add it to my profile or use it as an avatar. So far, we have this (courtesy of dazzledfirestar): Quote
Iggy_lovechild Posted June 22, 2007 Report Posted June 22, 2007 Oooh...my daily dose of mean-spirited fun is back! Hey, maybe now I won't be boiling with anger all the time. Quote
polywolly Posted June 22, 2007 Report Posted June 22, 2007 Thanks for posting this, Eve. I was checking back every now and again, and then I just forgot about it. It's always a great place to go for a good laugh. Quote
EveKnight75 Posted June 22, 2007 Author Report Posted June 22, 2007 No prob. When we were first discussing GAFF, the majority of us actually liked the site after visiting it, so I thought you guys would be interested this time around, too. Quote
Guest Adara Posted June 22, 2007 Report Posted June 22, 2007 I never had the chance to actually join the first time...I so joined this time. I love this place! LOL Quote
quamp Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 Ah... great. I've been collecting URLs of badfics into a single file... it's about 125 K now... as soon as I get approval, the floodgates will open! Quote
Iggy_lovechild Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Oh, and if anyone cares, I'll be lurking around Gaff under the handle Shinracentric. I'm not sure if I have the balls to contribute much but.... Quote
Guest Madapple Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Well, I can always lend you my balls Iggy, they're solid rock! Quote
Iggy_lovechild Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 Thanks, but I managed to find some semblance of testicular fortitude recently. Managed to get over my guilt and everything. Quote
Guest Adara Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Has anyone else been having problems logging into GAFF? I certainly haven't been able to do so for a week. I don't know why, it just gives me an error page. Anybody know what's up? Quote
EveKnight75 Posted July 11, 2007 Author Report Posted July 11, 2007 GAFF has an LJ community. This one is actually legit, because SG is the comm admin. The latest news was posted on the 10th. The servers have crashed. Quote
NightScribe Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 I figured they were having a server problem, but it seems to be under control now; they're back up. Quote
Guest Knorg Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 The only problem with this site is one particularly tenacious and unpleasant troll. Quote
SummerRayne Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 Are we not allowed to post any links to aff members fan-fics? Quote
EveKnight75 Posted December 24, 2007 Author Report Posted December 24, 2007 You're allowed to post links to AFF fics on GAFF. If you don't let the other GAFFers read the stories, how shall they judge for themselves? Sure, you need to get past the age form; since you need to be 18 in order to view GAFF, that's not an issue. Quote
SummerRayne Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 I am so excited about this topic. I'm gonna post soooo often on it and I hope others do the same. I always enjoy a good laugh at other writer's expense. lol :-P Quote
RikuDrak Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 Hmm looks fun. *registers then waits* Quote
Velvet D Coolette Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 Oh, I'm well up for that! I know someone who I was friends with for 7 years, then the relationship disintegrated (unfortunately the friendship was one-sided, i.e., me doing all the bloody work) He always did write awful fanfiction, which I always felt obliged to be polite about. Now I can post his awful, I'm-a-rapper-so-I'm-well-'ard script-format childishness! YES!! Quote
KuraiNeko Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 I think every good writer starts out as godawfull, you won't progress unless you get a certain criticism that makes you change for the better...like me. I had this one fan fic that started with an orgy and got all emotional at the end...I think that's what killed it. i had quite a few godawful fics and without criticism...I probably would still be Godawfull. *bows* thank you and tah tah Quote
RikuDrak Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 Technically it also stems from people who haven't even completed high school yet also try and write. You can't write well if you haven't even learned how to yet. Which people need to realize but never will since everyone wants to be accepted, special, and loved. The cure would be to actually get critique from someone more experienced privately before publishing on the internet, but that never happens. Quote
Keith Inc. Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 you won't progress unless you get a certain criticism that makes you change for the better...like me. Probably. But a lot of the critique there against my story...i didn't really think the criticism justified calling 'Gawdawful' on me. Room for improvement, sure. But i didn't think the writing was as bad as the reaction. Quote
Guest Flesh_Seraph Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) I'm going to rant a little here. I actually can't stand a number of the reviews at GAFF. The major problem with many of their reviews is that they assume that all authors aspire to scale the same pinnacle of unpublished wish-fulfillment that they do, and so they rip stories apart on those grounds. I like the reviews where they needle authors almost as pretentious as themselves, but sadly these are few and far between, perhaps because such efforts hit far too close to home. I can't even begin to imagine the train of thought that leads to the two most prevelent types of GAFF reviews. The first is any review where the major criticism involves the main character being "too perfect". This criticism is so tiresome, and the "flaws = compelling!" reasoning so simplistic, that I generally just label the reviewer an idiot, as opposed to the poor writer, who almost certainly didn't know any better. Fic writers should be banned from even using the phrase "Mary Sue" just to save themselves from a lifetime of characterizing their protagonists as angsty, unlikable, failure-inundated pricks. The second type of prevelent review involves porn without plot. Why even bother reviewing that sort of story? It's like Roger Ebert writing a zero-star review of Girls Gone Wild: Cancun. Anyhow, the over-seriousness with which certain GAFF reviews take themselves, and the pretentious, elitist pomposity of their remarks, are trespasses against good taste at least as egregious, if not more, than some poor fanfic. By all means, people, keep shitting on novice writers and poor shmoes just trying to write something to jerk off to. It's certainly a better use of your time than, say, evaluating and improving your own work. - FS EDIT: I just want to add that I think GAFF would be a FAR better site if 90% of the review text was cut out, leaving only the excerpts. It would seem far less bullying that way, and leave the reader to come to his own conclusions about why the story is bad, instead of having to listen to the mean-spirited and obvious explanation. It's true- some fan-fiction premises are so poor, they're indefensible. Like the Hannibal Lecter/Clarice Starling heavy-metal duet, one GAFF review I did enjoy...but not because of the review itself. Yes, it's bad- but we KNOW that. Explaining in detail exactly why it's bad, holding my hand through it, just makes it seem mean, like a guided tour of you punching a cripple. Think about a more minimalist approach and I think GAFF will appeal to a wider demographic. Edited September 10, 2008 by Flesh_Seraph Quote
JayDee Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 I remember GAFF when the point of the forums was to be funny. It wasn't about serious reviews or constructive criticism or even, in any real sense, being fair to writers or stories. This was a long time ago. Back at a place called voyboards, and maybe the early orangey boards. And yes, it would be cruel and occasionally pretentious but generally, very, very, funny. Then it was kind of... the funny users mostly drifted away, about three score 4channers joined up, and the rest were 14 year olds writing in depth critiques about why someone else from their obscure or not so obscure fandom was just the worst ("This anime character would never consider this anime character as a snugglebuddy!")- without a single damn joke. Many of the 14 year olds would also have a proud link to their own fanfiction story page, where you could see they themselves had hundreds o badly written tosh. See, the point of the porn without plot reviews was that they could be side splittingly hilarious if handled by somebody with a sense of humor. There was one of Superjizz' stories got a review that I damn near wet myself reading. I figure at least half of the reviewers/readers back then were still masturbating furiously over the stories, but they took 'em apart for the cruel amusement of all concerned. Then the too-young crowd was all over the place and they just figured "pr0n = ick" ...and now it seems that even the over-ernest reviewers have gone, with very few new reviews being posted, and the forum exists purely as a site for people to talk about what random shit, like any other general 'net forum or start threads just to post some livejournal level opinion of no interest even to their friendslist. And that's why I hardly visit these days and can't recommend the place. No sense of humour any more. Quote

When your own guiding star in life is to find someone who can live up to what you believe is the proper sexual characterization of Optimus Prime, can you really look at the next guy over, who only wants to see Jennifer Love Hewitt get it on with an elephant, and ridicule him? I weep not only for Jennifer's poor vagina, but for the human race. - FS Quote
