Before I ever got to the HP section for the initial first step of all this, it was noted in the Site News block. That's where anything like this would've been and was announced. When the site news was updated, I was still working in the left hand menu for this part of the cleanup. All parties involved in this cleanup, and reprogramming (which is being done OFF site) are well aware of why it is this is being done. I dunno, I think I'd rather have a program that's actually working, than one where the database had a severe crash (again), and any all story data was scrambled. You might want to have a look at the work forums, and see just what exactly we're up against, particularly when it comes to the repair end. Bearing in mind we've only just started the hardest part of all this. Maybe THEN that could inspire some patience and forbearance. All of what is now ongoing, SHOULD have been done immediately following the subdivide of the database across the different subdomains. That is wasn't, means that there is that much more of a mess to deal with now.

It's not possible to generate a broadcast email for the archive. The software does NOT support the function. If you look, the categories you mentioned weren't deleted, they were MOVED. They became subcategories of their parent type category. Should you actually bother to take the time to read the MULTIPLE posts on this topic, and what exactly is going on, you might not be so damn impatient, and as you said, selfish.

There are four of us going through this whole thing. Only ONE of us is actually doing the db fixes for what is found. We're working as fast as we can, however. It's a good thing we're all speed readers. As to time frame, that gets a little tricky, because that will depend on what is found in each and every subdomain. We're only, what, four days into it so far, and have almost completed the first subdomain. So, a good approximation would be 1 to 3 weeks per subdomain, depending upon how many stories that particular subdomain has. There is much more to what we are doing, than simply recategorizing you know. My post to this topic actually outlines a bit more what it is we're doing, exactly. Of course, I've already outlined that elsewhere as well. As I've said before, you all have to realize that not only is this a time consuming task, all four of us work full time plus jobs. I'll give you an example of just what exactly it is that I personally do, on a daily basis, just to get this done as quick as possible. On my work days, both before and after I come home, I tend to work on this for anywhere from 6 to 10 hours in a day. Mind you, I'm usually scheduled 10 hour shifts where I work. Somewhere in between this and work, I sleep, get some household chores done, and other normal day to day life activities. The next couple of days, I'm off work. I expect (as this has been my habit on my off days) that I'll put in an average of 12 hours each day to this task. In the meantime, the ladies helping me, are going through their selected subcategories and whatnot, generally after work. I can tell you from observation, not ONE of them has spent less than four hours a day on this task, every day, since we started this part. Of the four of us, I'm the only one without small children at home. Mine are all grown. So, you have to factor in as well that they must take care of their families and familial responsiblities, ASIDE from so graciously donating their time to assisting me, and getting this done for the archive. You can believe that no one will be happier than I to have this finished and done. It'll be NICE to be able to actually read for once, get back to my art which I've neglected, and a host of other things I'm ignoring in favor of getting this whole thing done as quickly as is possible.

I'm going to address this one LAST time, and then I'm locking this topic. 1. The recategorization and then the follow up cleanup task is critical for the overall health of the database. We were teetering towards a severe crash, which would've meant corruption of the data that may have been salvageable, or total loss. Up until I finished this FIRST step of this (and there is more to come), I was running repair utilities on the archive database at least FOUR times a day, every day. All in an effort to keep it somewhat stable, so it would not crash. That's something I've been doing with it for months now. The first step of this overall overhaul, has actually stablilized things enough to where now I'm only having to run those repair utilities once a day. That's an improvement. 2. The code is archaic and beyond much more repairs than have already been done to it. It limits us severely in what we can do as far as levels of subcategories. There are only THREE levels I have to work with. The program itself is in the process of being rewritten. By doing what I (and others who are helping me) are doing to actually clean things up and get things moved around and such, it makes it more organized for when that software is finished and uploaded. At that point, I'll have the ability to work with unlimited levels of subcategories. That will make it so I can do more, and add more sorts of category types as sublevels. 3. We (my group of volunteers and I) are working sequentially, subdomain by subdomain. When we get to the subdomain you're referencing, it'll be cleaned up and set up according to specific subsets we have set up, such as, for pair specific categories, they have to have 10 or more stories to have their own subcategoy. So, the small ones will end up history, and there will be some further rearranging once we GET there. The ORDER we are doing this is as follows: Books Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cartoons Celebrity Comics Harry Potter Lord of the Rings Movies Non English Originals Television X-Men Anime Anime 2 (Gundam, Beyblade, etc) Bleach Final Fantasy Games InuYasha Naruto YuGiOh YuYu Hakusho 4. The tasks involved in the overall cleanup include the following (in part): a. Repairing glitches to chapter data, from 1 major and 2 minor database crashes, occurred in 2003, 2005, 2006, after they have been found and posted. b. finding and deleting troll, flame, spam, and duplicate posts to each story's review boards. c. finding and merging duplicate stories d. finding and deleting spamfics e. finding and deleting trollfics f. finding and merging duplicate users g. finding and moving fiction that is in the wrong subdomain entirely As to the "oc links", have you tried searching the summary for your character choice x OC? That'll bring up the stories.

The emails are hidden for the users in the archive because the program is old, and doesn't protect users from spam harvesters. So, by hiding them, the registered user emails aren't accessible by these things.
