  1. DSX - If you were to re-read, if there is a suspicion that you are not at least 18 and we are unable to verify your age through our normal methods, then we ask that you send us a copy of a photo ID with all information blocked out except for your birthday and a picture of you holding said photo id.

...however on occasions it may not be clear so AFF might ask that you provide proof of age if we suspect you are underage. Please note, we aren’t doing this to be mean, or to harass you, or any other crazy reason you may come up with – We are doing it to ensure that you are of the correct legal age to be accessing this site in an effort to stop legal issues before they happen. All AFF requires is a valid form of ID that has your picture and birthday on it, accompanied by a picture of you holding said ID. Users are welcome to use a photo editing program to black out any personally identifying information other than the date of birth. It is, of course, your option to decline to provide this, however, please know that failure to comply with our request does mean that you are subject to deletion.
  2. LadyKannah,

When it comes to the electronic signature, the concept is that even though you are signing electronically that it holds no less validity than a signature on a piece of paper and should be treated as such. It's similar to the idea that one can just sign with an 'x' on a legal document, it is in no way any less valid than a person signing a full name. So whether you use your full name, initials, etc, please understand that you are entering into a legally binding agreement stating that you are at least 18 years old and providing your accurate birthday.

As for the verification code, when users switch over to the new users panel, they will be required to ensure all information is correct and filled in, which at that point will send a verification link, not code to the email provided. This ensures that all active users are providing a valid and working email address.

In regards to your suggestion, I refer you to my statements above to the previous user.

Thanks for taking the time to read our news and comment!

  3. Apollo watched Foe drag Kelk and his girls off towards someone. She didn't see anyone that she thought she knew, so shrugged and turned to Bronx, "Author Panels you say? I think we might be able to do those, but the fun ones don't start until the evening. The day time ones are rather vanilla..."

Bronx snorted, "Vanilla? Well then what the hell is the point?"

"That's sorta what I said Bronx... On the other hand, we can go haunt the Exhibitor Halls over at the Marriott... There is this huge space between 'em and a bar a few levels up where a ton of people gather. We can people watch, see some awesome merch and maybe find a Sue or two..." Linking arms with Bronx, she headed towards the stairs to the level above the lobby, preferring to use the skywalk instead of trying to cross the street.

"Sounds like a plan, but any idea how we are going to disable the Sues with so many people around?"

Walking up the stairs, Apollo shrugged a shoulder, "Haven't quite made it that far yet... I'm sure between the two of us we'll figure something out."

Bronx nodded before pausing to take in a handsome young man dressed as an elf. Leaning into Apollo, she whispered, "Think Cal would notice if we sneaked him onto the ship...?"

Apollo laughed before tugging on Bronx's arm. Expertly, she navigated through the crowds before realizing something. "Shit! We don't have badges! I totally forgot about them!" Studying a nearby Con-goer with a weekend pass, she used her magic to ensure that all members of the party had badges, making sure that they appeared in a way that anyone watching would think they had just missed it before and used their pen names as nicknames. "There, much better. Wandering around wouldn't have been an issue, but you can't get into panels or halls with out them and after a certain hour, you have to have one to use the skywalks or even enter the hotels if you don't have keycards."

"Whoops! Ah well, shit happens," Bronx said pragmatically, following Apollo into the Marriott and out to the Atrium level. The crowd ebbed and flowed around them, a curious mix of people in various costumes and garb from every imaginable 'Verse, as well as people in street clothing. Near the railing that overlooked all the way down to the Marquis level, a Ken and Barbie in fake boxes were posing for pictures, while a steampunk group gathered around the bar, complete with a violinist with LED's that changed colors depending on the tune.

Bronx spun slowly, taking it all in before moving to the rail and looking down at the crowds below. "So many men, so little time... There has to be some time for fun, right?"

Grinning, Apollo pointed over at two men at the bar, one dressed only in a chainmaille loincloth and the other in a kilt. "It's like they were made for us, no?"

A feral grin on her face, Bronx walked towards them, a predatory swing in her scale clad hips. Apollo followed, using her powers just enough to make it seem as if she was floating across the floor, as opposed to walking on it.

"Hey boys... Whatever are you doing here with out a lovely lady or two?" Bronx just about purred, leaning into the one in chainmaille, a hand snaking down the bare chest, stopping just above the metal.

Apollo took up a place on the other side next to the kilted man, twitching the material, "And please tell me that you are going traditional under there... Cause I might have some blue ribbon here somewhere."

  4. Thank you in advance Mare!! All of our moderators start out as part of our clean up crew as an evaluation period, so if that would interest you, please email DemonGoddess and myself at admin@adult-fanfiction.org so we can talk further offline :)

  5. While I think DG was extremely polite and accurate in her response, please allow me to honestly question you here.

This is an original, so this means that the person worked hard to come up with their own world and characters, to develop a plotline of their own.

I understand it was for your private collection, but have you seen our Hall of Shame? We publicly shame and ban people who take other people's stories and post them - EVEN when the reason is just that they wanted to share so more people can see it.

Would you go to a library, read a book, decide you like it and just photocopy the entire book so you could keep it?? I'm going to guess your answer is no, you wouldn't as that would be most decent people's answer. So if you wouldn't do that to a published author from a library, why would you disrespect one of our authors in such a manner? Just because they decided to share it on an archive for free doesn't make it any less theirs or deserving of any less respect from the readers, so pardon me while I say shame on you.

  6. Cap'n Melissa Wood Egbert

    Remember when....

Checking out at the grocers recently, the young cashier suggested I should bring my own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. I apologised and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." She was right about one thing -- our generation didn't have the green thing in “Our” day. So, what did we have back then…?

After some reflection and soul-searching on "Our" day here's what I remembered we did have.... Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilised and refilled, so it could use the same bottles repeatedly. So, they really were recycled. But, we didn't have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocers and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two streets. But, she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of London. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send thru the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But, isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Found this on FB, got a kick out of it - I'm not old enough to have done it all, but I remember some of it!

  7. First off, it was posted on dA so it may or may not ever have been loaded on AFF which is primarily what the search forms are for as well, AFF hosts these forums. Beyond that, it's not against the rules to look for one as it may be posted elsewhere - You just can't pass on a copy that you have saved elsewhere.

  8. Not sure what you mean by everything, but as a point of reference - In the future just correct the problem, let us know that you did and it will be unhidden.

As for a way to communicate with readers, that currently isn't something we have planned in this upgrade, however because the code will be customized and not patched, it will actually make it easier for us to add features in the future due to our programmer working with her own code. My biggest recommendation though is to use for forums for review replies and what not. If it's a one shot, make the topic in advance and put it in the story to let readers know where to find responses. If it is a multiple chapter story, post it each chapter and let them know you have replied to reviews from ReaderX, ReaderY and ReaderZ. You can have author's notes, so long as they stay under 600 words.

The other thing to keep in mind is that just because a person doesn't respond back on a topic, doesn't mean that they didn't read it. To pull a topic at random - There are 9 posts (all by the author) but over 200 views. It's just like views vs reviews on the archive side - People may read and not review.

Encourage discussion both in an AN as well as when you post the replies in the forum. Some of the most successful review reply threads I've seen the author doesn't just post answers or thank their readers, they ask questions or phrase things in such a manner that opens things up for discussion. Just somethings to keep in mind, but please know we hear the request and you may see it at some point in the future, just not this go around.

  9. Once Cal started the trip to bring them back to D*C verse, Apollo explained where they were going. "It's the start of Labor Day weekend back in our Verse, which means Dragon*Con is starting." She shuddered delicately, "And while I love Dragon*Con because of the cosplay aspect, it's ripe with Sues. Foe and I have been a few times and we tend to take out a handful, but we don't make much of a dent. With a group this size, we may be able to get a decent number this year."

Moving to the controls, she pulled up a map of the convention area. "The Con is held in these 5 hotels. The Sheraton is along Courtland here, a few blocks back on Courtland is the Hilton, across from the Hilton is the Marriott, then across from that is the Hyatt. That is on Peachtree, down a few blocks on Peachtree is the Weston basically they form a 'U' with the Sheraton and Weston being the tops of it," She pointed at each hotel in turn. "All the panels and halls are in these buildings, but the entire area for a few blocks either way tends to be filled with Con goers.

Now the tricky part here is that this is a convention and people do cosplay, which means we will have to be extra careful when trying to determine if it's a Sue or a cosplayer. Also, more than anything we have to stay low key. These are mortals, in the real world, a majority of them have no idea what a Sue is, but Sue's love it for one very simple reason. Sue's feed off of adoration and there are hundreds of people at D*C that snap pictures constantly of those in costume, and usually the photographers go on and on about how they love the garb - Making it the perfect feeding ground. Foe has found that after the convention Sues back in their own worlds tend to be stronger than normal after the, for lack of a better word, adoration orgy."

Suddenly, Sanura came awake with a scream, "PUBLISHER!!!"

The group turned to her en masse. Apollo raised a brow, "Pardon? Are you okay? You've been so exhausted recently..."

Foe came over the intercom, where he'd apparently been listening into the conversation. "Publishers are no fun, not something we ever want to run into honestly. They exist just to clean up Author messes, anything they touch goes into the eternal circular file, never again to see the light of day. The public wouldn't even know they existed. The only thing that escapes them is their own brain children, they alone have immunity." He walked into the room as he finished speaking, "Now where did you hear about Publisher's Sanura?"

She sat shivering, Jem stroking her back softly. "I was dozing on and off for the last few hours and it was in this dream I had." Explaining the dream in detail, it became obvious that she was in and out of wakefulness as Apollo was talking, as some of the dream interwove DA's reveal that Crane was still with them and the fact they were going to the convention.

Sanura apologized for falling asleep on Apollo, who merely shrugged, "It's been a long couple of days honestly, so I understand. Did you get the run down of being careful to distinguish Sues?"

Sheepishly, Sanura shook her head. While Apollo was going back over it with her, Foe was looking at her strangely, trying to figure out where she had heard of Publishers, when he himself had only discovered them shortly before the group got together. Either way, it was a good thing for them to be aware of; he had honestly meant to mention it to them at some point, but the right time never seemed to have come.

Feeling Cal set down outside of Jonathon's lab, Apollo walked over to DA, "Come on hun, time to get him back to his Verse so he can become substantial again." Whereas before she thought she could see through him, there were most definitely holes in the now grey and white coloring. At least Foe had confirmed that once he was back in his own Verse Crane would once again return to living color, no worse for wear.

Cal opened the hatch politely for the women, understanding DA's concern and not wanting to add to it. "Just hurry guys, we got a convention to crash."

DA walked him inside and rested him on the couch before restoring him to full size. "I honestly didn't even think that being in the multidimensional space would affect him like this. And how does one forget you have a husband in your backpack?" she moaned, sinking to her knees beside him.

Not really sure how to respond, never having been married. Giving DA a few more moments, she held herself back from tapping her foot impatiently. "Hun, we gotta go, the Con is already underway, we need to get there ASAP. I have a feeling we may have already missed Friday."

DA whirled, temper flaring, "He isn't getting any better Apollo! Do you honestly think I'm going to leave him here looking like this and just spirit away to somewhere else?"

"First off, we've only been here maybe 10 minutes, it took days for that to happen, do you honestly think it would reverse itself that fast? The way I see it, you can stay here where Bruce knows you've been and deal with him or you can come back with us and kill some Sue's to work out some of that agression. Which is it going to be? Cause in 5 seconds I'm walking back to Cal and we are leaving. You're either with us or not." Apollo fired back matter-of-factly.

DA glanced back at her husband for a moment, the fight going out of her as she realized there would be hell to pay if she stayed and Bruce found her at Jonathon's side. She didn't say a word, instead stalked back to Cal and headed straight to her room, throwing over her shoulder, "Just tell me when we get there and I'll kill for ya boss."

Shaking her head, Apollo headed to the galley for some much needed coffee. She'd just taken her first sip of the rich Columbian blend when she heard a syncronized thud thud, followed by the sound of metal crushing metal. Rushing to one of the ports, she looked outside only to see a full sized, 7 story tall Walker from Star Wars reflected back at her in the windows of the Hilton. "CAL! WHAT DID YOU DO?"

"Aw shit... I think I just crushed the Delorean..." Came the reply.

  10. I’ve been pondering this news post since before Christmas and what I would say as we head into our 10th year here at AFF. As I’ve thought back about our history a few things come to mind. Bear with me as I wax nostalgic. Some of you may remember Ayla, the founder of our beloved AdultFanFiction.Net. I’ve tried to get in touch with her over the last few months, but haven’t been able to find her/get in touch with her. Even still, I know she would be so proud to see AFF entering its 10th year! In September of 2001, she began a small Buffy archive over on Geocities, but when FanFiction.Net killed mature content in one fell swoop, Ayla saw and filled the void. September 13th, 2002 AdultFanFiction.Net was registered and there starts our history as we know it.

Ayla tried to keep up with the ever going membership and demands, but it quickly outgrew what she was able to handle and myself along with a few others were brought in to help moderate the site. I’ve always been an excellent manager and quickly became the head moderator, so when Ayla got to the point in 2005 that she was no longer able to keep up with the site, she handed ownership over to myself and another moderator. And such starts my history with the site. Despite my own life issues preventing me from being here for several years, over the past 16 months, I’ve had the honor of leading the site again. I’d like to thank everyone for their support and I look forward to an amazing 2012 with you all! On to the news!

A quick summary of what is included in this month’s edition:

    • Through out 2012, AFF will undergo a complete code rewrite, adding a lot of new features and options! Read below to see what's in store!
    • We currently have a PayPal balance of $589.03 after January’s hosting costs have been paid, donations are always welcome though!
    • AFF has a new Logo for 2012! Head to the archive to check it out!
    • If your registration date changes, read on to know why
    • Get an email with your login information? You weren't hacked, DemonGoddess explains why below
    • Some additional information about AFF's proof of age requirements you should be aware of
    • Archive Moderation and Clean-up status

Over the last year I know I’ve mentioned updates to the code and new features, but you haven’t seen much other than the Rich Text Editor for story uploads. As you may remember from my news post last January, our Archive is a rework of our original Storyline code, updated, patched and MacGyver’d to hell and back. When Manta started digging in to implement the new search, she realized that there was no way to integrate it and get some of the other features that we want put into the archive. That meant that the code had to be re-written from the ground up.

Since we are rewriting the code, this actually gives us a good bit more flexibility in our changes, upgrades and additions! The old and new code for the most part will be running side by side until we complete the re-write, at which time everything will be on the new code. We will be rolling the changes out over the next year, starting with the new registration procedures and profile in February and expanding from there. Some of the other items you will see in 2012 include: Skinning options so you can pick your color scheme, awards, better navigation through story listings, improvements on the submission and editing systems, new search tools that will include searching the description and an Author/Member search.

When the various changes are rolled out, I will detail the changes and how they will affect you. Please keep in mind that feedback from the users is going to be key during this process. I know that we won’t be able to please everyone, as the saying goes, you can please some of the people some of the time and all of the people none of the time; however, when you provide feedback on the changes, please make sure it is constructive and contains workable content. Of course, we won’t complain about the ‘I LOVE this!’ comments, but if you are going to say that you don’t like it, please make sure that you let us know what you don’t like and why. Example: ‘I don’t like the new profile because of x. It doesn’t help with y.’ etc. Like I said, constructive feedback please.

So what are you going to be seeing in February? The main thing is the new registration and profiles. In regards to registration, we will now be requiring that users input their birthday and provide a working email. Much like the forum does now, we will send a validation link to the email provided that a user must click before being able to use the site. With these changes, an email can only be used once, so this will cut back on duplicate registration. As a reminder, if you have multiple accounts with the same email address, you must contact us before the change happens or you may find yourself unable to access the site.

Along with the registration changes, it will impact current users log in experience. When you log in for the first time, the system will check to ensure that you have all the required information such as a birthday and valid working email. A verification link will be sent with the first log in to ensure that the email provided is indeed a working one. You can help make this process easier by checking your profile now to ensure that the data is all there now!

All new registration will be using the new profile immediately; however existing users at the time of change will be able to access both the old and new profiles until we make the full break with the old code. I recommend making the full switch to the new profile as soon as possible so you can make use of the new features! These new features will include a more user friendly recommended reading list, a system to list what you are currently reading, favorite author listings so that you can keep track of them without having to bookmark them in your browser, a global profile so that all stories are shown without having to jump between subdomains, avatar linking instead of uploads and an area to show awards and honors.

Now, as I talk about the upgrade, let me also say that this isn’t coming cheap. Despite Manta giving AFF a 75% discount, the upgrade is still going to cost us $1500 USD total, so anything you can contribute is very much appreciated. We do currently have a balance of $589.03 in PayPal, but please remember a site isn’t free to run and we are all volunteers. If you have any money that you care spare for the site, we do appreciate it. You can either donate directly through PayPal or if you would like something back for your money, you can also donate by purchasing items from our Cafepress Store. All items have a $3.00 markup on them. As always, if you are looking for a specific item with one of this year’s designs on it and don’t see it, just let me know and I’ll get it added for you if Cafepress has it!

You may have noticed, as of today our logo has changed. The new logo was designed by Adelphus for our 2012 logo contest commemorating 10 years of serving the Fan Fiction community.

If you notice a change in your registration date, please know there are two reasons this may happen. First off, if you decided to register before your 18th birthday, when it is discovered, your registration date is changed to reflect your 18th birthday and anything you posted prior to turning 18 is deleted from the archive to comply with legal requirements. The other reason is if you have duplicate accounts and we merge them. When an account is merged, the oldest accounts creation date is reflected.

Have you gotten an email recently containing your log in information without requesting one? Again, this is a result of the merge process when combining duplicate accounts. Don’t worry, your information hasn’t been hacked, we simply send so you know what information you need to use post merge.

Now, let’s talk about our age verification procedure. We have our own methods that we use to determine a member’s age; however on occasions it may not be clear so AFF might ask that you provide proof of age if we suspect you are underage.

It’s been a very busy couple of months, so we haven’t had an opportunity to work on the Clean-Up project, but as always our moderators have been busy so check out where we are 2008 to now.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the news and of course if you have any questions, please let us know!

    Happy writing,

    Apollo & DemonGoddess061
