  1. I'm still in shock that we are hitting 10 years in 2012! The logo submissions are in and now we need your votes to determine who will hold the place of honor on our site next year!

Voting is open to all members of the forums as well as guests, though there are different steps for each. Voting closes 11:59 EST, Dec 18, 2011.

If you are a forum member:

    Please review the pictures here

Come back to this thread and vote for your favorite image.

    If you are a guest:

    Review the pictures here

Then come back to this thread and in a reply to the post, vote for your favorite image.

Please note that only guests should respond in the thread. Any forum member responses will be removed from the thread to keep everything in order.

  2. The time is here! The entries for the 2012 Calendar Contest have been reviewed to ensure they meet requirements and here they are for your perusal and voting!

Because we do not have enough entries for a full calendar, we will instead be doing three single sheet print calendars. What this means is that the image will be up top and all 12 months will be on the bottom. The top 3 images will then be used for the 2012 calendar and products! This way our artists that submitted still get recognition for their work and we still have a calendar - Everyone wins!

Thank you to all of the artists who submitted work!

  3. Since last month’s new format (and delivery method) managed to triple the amount of views we’ve had for the news, for now I think I will be sticking with it. Please note there is a poll at the top of the news to see if you actually like the changes or not, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

A quick summary of what is included in this month’s edition:

    • A fellow Fan Fiction Site needs help! Donate to TheSilverSnitch!
    • We currently have a PayPal balance of $754.92 after November’s hosting costs have been paid.
    • The Calendar Art and Logo contest entries have ended. Due to lack of submissions only the Logo’s will be voted on.
    • New Moderator Account created for moderating activities.
    • Are you a member of our Forums?
    • A few minor Forum Upgrades
    • Important changes to the Archive Registration and Log-in. If you read nothing else, please read this post.
    • Search Engine Upgrade
    • Archive Moderation and Clean-up status

AFF has long been dedicated to ensuring Fan Fiction freedom. It was brought to our attention that a much loved archive TheSilverSnitch.Net has gone down. The Harry Potter community seems to be extremely saddened by the loss; however it is not due to the owner, but due to the lack of support. The poor owner has been deluged in email asking why the site isn’t up, where everything went etc. People have been yelling at her even!

Most Fan Fiction Archives need donations and TheSilverSnitch is no different. Believe me, I don’t run this for the money (I make none) and I don’t have the money to do it alone. AFF has been extremely lucky to have fans that have contributed in the past before we became able to cover our costs with advertising revenue. So before you get on your high horse about the site being down right now, remember that us Owner’s do this for you guys and often can’t afford to pay for it on our own. On behalf of TheSilverSnitch, please if you can spare any money, donate to TheSilverSnitch by sending money through PayPal to the following address: arwenelve13@yahoo.com

Speaking of support, our PayPal balance is currently at $754.92 after we paid November’s hosting costs. As mentioned above, donations are always appreciated! We have some things going on coding wise that will really appreciate your support, so keep reading!

One thing we do yearly to help support the site is have an Art contest to gather art for our CafePress store. Unfortunately, we only got a few entries into the Calendar contest, not enough to make a decent calendar. We are still in the process of determining what we will be doing for the Calendar this year, but the good news is that we did get entries into our Logo design contest. I had originally planned to have it go live Sunday, but due to my boyfriend being home on leave before deployment, I’m afraid I got a little caught up and fell behind on my timeline. I will have it posted by next weekend though and will make sure that it’s put up on our Facebook, Twitter and an email is sent out to our Forum Members.

Due to some people deciding that it would be a good idea to harass our moderators on their own Author Pages and stories, we have decided to move to a Moderator account for all moderating activities in the Archive. If you receive a review from AFF Moderator on a story, please note that it does come from one of the staff. All moderators will be signing their reviews, but as always, please remember that they are enforcing our ToS. If you have an issue with the ToS or review, please feel free to contact myself and DemonGoddess through any of our listed contact information or admin@adult-fanfiction.org.

Hey, since you are at our forums reading this, have you joined us over here yet? If not, I’d love to have you! There are games, the Shoutbox and all types of discussion to be had. Click the link to register, follow the instructions and we will get you approved as soon as possible!

For those of you who are members: There was a minor forum upgrade done in the last month. Along with it, we updated a few of the modules we use in the forum. In doing so, I’m pleased to report that the Arcade scoring is now working correctly. Have fun playing!!

Because this topic is so important, it has its own topic here! A basic overview is that as part of the upgrades to the site we in the midst of making, our registration is being made more secure and log in procedures are changing. Please make sure you read this topic before the changed are put in place in December – It’ll help save all of us a lot of headaches!! (Yes, it is important enough that I linked to it twice!)

Another coding change we have been trying to implement is upgrades to our search engine. However, the current script will not allow us to do so at this time. We have a pretty new core engine even, but all attempts to implement the search upgrades have caused some rather spectacular crashes in the test site we use, so you can understand our reluctance to put it in place quite yet! We are almost done with the re-write we are working on upgrading from php3 to php5; once that is complete, we will be able to get our new search engine up and running. As this is still a few months out, please be patient with us!

We are still working on moderating the archive and cleaning up from the crash, you can always review our progress at the following links: Monthly Moderation Update & Clean Up Update

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the news and of course if you have any questions, please let us know!

    Happy writing,

    Apollo & DemonGoddess061

  4. Not only that, but please know that if you are flaming, even when it's a nasty such as this, that it could have repercussions on your own account as well. Unlike FanFiction.Net where all you can do is spam the reports and flame the author, we actively moderate the archive and every single report is reviewed with in 24 hours. Just because you may not hear back immediately doesn't mean that we aren't working behind the scenes to ensure we have the truth (Like DG mentioned) and stopping it :D

  5. Also, the archive is a rickety old thing that has been strung together multiple ways to Sunday... When we remove a story it's for good reason and if an author does, again they have their own reasons. We honestly can't afford the space to put a place holder in saying "This person was a minor." "This person was a plagiarist." etc etc.

  6. DG posted this last time we had the issue, so I figured I would reshare!

We'll update as we know more.

How to add exceptions to your browser

    In Firefox-

    From the menu, select Tools

    Select Options, then Security

    There is a button "exceptions"

Click it, and add the url you want allowed.

After you do this, you MUST clear your cache and close your browser, then restart it.

Changes don't take effect until you do.

    In IE

    In the menu, select tools.

    Select Internet Options

This brings up a pop up with tabs

    Click the security tab.

Click the "trusted sites" green arrow.

Add the url to the site you want to add

Again, you must clear your cache, close your browser, and restart it for any changes to take effect.

    In Opera

From the menu, select Settings, and then Preferences. Alternately, use Ctrl+F12

From the advanced tab, click security.

    Click trusted websites

    Add the url

Clear cache, close browser, restart it

In Safari, there is no real way to set exceptions. However, if you really wanted to, you can click the gear icon, select preferences, click security and uncheck "Warn when visiting fraudulent sites". I wouldn't necessarily do this, as it will leave the browser open to ANY site at all. Including ones that are truly infected.

    In Chrome

    Click the wrench icon

    Select Options

    Click "Under the Hood"

Again, you could disable the phishing and malware service, but I wouldn't recommend it.

    Click "Content Settings"

    For cookies, click "manage exceptions"

    Add the url

    For Java, click "manage exceptions"

    Add the url

When you're done, click "clear browsing data"

Close the browser, and restart it.

    ---

I put the above information up, because after further research, it can take a week or two to remove a site from Google's black list, no matter if it's clean and been tested.

  7. Hey everyone - Just a quick note:

We are aware that we are listed as an attack site on Google and that you may get a warning when you try to visit the site. Please know that we are aware of the issue.

The ad software that we use (and have used for quite some time) appears to be the culprit. There is a bot out there that searches for sites using it and then runs an exploit. DemonGoddess has fixed the issue (again) and is currently working on finding new software that doesn't have the same issues.

In the meantime, it can take up to a week for Google to remove us once we submit the site for review, so you may still get the errors until the review is complete. To combat this, you can always add AFF to your trusted site list. Please know that the site is secure and you will not be infected with any type of malware when you visit it.

Thank you for your patience! We honestly do appreciate it!

  8. While I would need your archive log in to check and verify, I can say based off your description of your issue that it was discovered that you signed up for the site while you were a minor. As such, all pre-18 content is removed and your registration date is altered. If you do not have the stories backed up, I apologize they are gone.

  9. It’s time to change things up a little bit! For the last year, the news has followed the same general format and I’ve gotten into the bad habit of just plugging in the new information and not really doing much else. So to mark a year of me being back, I’m going to be testing out some different ways of delivering the news over the next few months. Please hang in with me and provide feedback on what you like or don’t like!

Don’t have time to read the full news?

    News at a glance:

    • Dragon*Con was a decent success with this being the first year I’ve gone on behalf of the site.
    • We currently have a PayPal balance of $676.94 after Oct’s hosting costs have been paid.
    • The art contest for the 2012 Calendar & 10 Year Banner is up and running
    • Reviewers Association is still looking for members, click here!
    • Clean up from the last major crash is still ongoing, see link for more details
    • Remember, if you have more than one archive account, this is against TOS. Please let us know if you have one due to past technical issues.
    • Mod Staff as always have been busy, check out this link to see how
    • There will be a minor outage for 30 to 45 minutes Tuesday 10/4 between 6 and 8am EDT.

Have a little bit more time? Did that just whet your appetite? Well then read on!

For those of you that weren’t aware, I made my annual pilgrimage to the All Mighty Dragon*Con, however this year it wasn’t quite the same. Normally, I hang out in the Trek Track; then I’ll sprinkle some writing track and a few other panels here and there. This year, I made a point of hitting up more of the writers track and specifically some of the self-publishing panels. I was able to catch up with a few of the authors that use our site and make contact with several more that might be interested in our services. About one month out, we’ve had two inquiries from Dragon*Con and one sign up. Hopefully more will come, but in the end if I even manage to add one advertiser, that’s $20 a month more in revenue!

Speaking about money, we have a surplus! Over the last year, generous donations and a growing advertising section have allowed us to sock away money. Some of it has started to go towards renovations of the sites code and new features, but there is so much more that I want to do! Even though we have some savings, donations are always appreciated. Please feel free to check out our donation page.

Upgrades? How about we start with a new logo for 2012? Haven’t you heard? It’s AFF’s 10 year anniversary! If you know anything about the site, it was original started as a Geocities site dedicated to the Buffy and Angel fandoms, the favorite fandoms of our founder, Ayla, back in September of 2001. When FanFiction.Net began purging all adult content, Ayla created AdultFanFiction.Net and officially purchased the domain Sept 13, 2002. As a result, we are celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary throughout all of 2012 as well as our annual Calendar contest!

That being said, as you may know, I don’t draw, hell, I barely write (My Author’s page shows that…) most of the time. So me coming up with a new logo is so farfetched that it belongs in its own fan fiction, hehe! Once again I call on our artists, to submit their work. The calendar contest can be found here, while the logo contest is here.

Now, that gets our Artists involved… How’s about our Readers? I know there are a lot of you out there. Did you know that reviews are the life blood for our Authors? But, did you know that for some reason not many people review and some Authors have none at all? Well, good news is a Reviewers Association was started to address some of the inadequacies. The only thing they ask is that you find a story in an area that you read that has no reviews and leave one. Of course, they do have other rules involved, but you can find those here.

As you read, depending on where, if it’s an older story you may notice code jibberish, chapters that don’t show an author and various other issues. We had a crash a few years back and we are still in the long drawn out process of cleaning up the mess the previous tech team left afterwards. DG and the clean-up team are working diligently to get it fixed and you can see the progress here.

Just as a general reminder, we know that the previous mod team didn’t always do what they should have and that some people couldn’t access old accounts, so created a new account. If you are one of these people and you have multiple accounts, please let us know by emailing DemonGoddess061. You can find her contact information in her profile. In fact, if you have multiple accounts period and they have not been approved by the Admin team, please let us know as well. We do on occasion find duplicate accounts, and when we do DemonGoddess merges the accounts together and generates an email that sends the users their login information. If you get one of these, and you didn’t generate it, then DemonGoddess did. If you are in anyway concerned that she didn’t, please feel free to contact us.

Speaking of the mod team, did you know that our moderators are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that nasties like plagues and minors aren’t hanging around? Not to mention the weekly sweeps to ensure ToS compliance – Man, are they busy! Wanna see some of what they have found? Take a look at the topic here!

Minor side note since it won’t be a huge outage, the partitions on the hard drive weren’t set up to work with a growing database, so Nexcess will be setting up a new hard drive with the appropriate partitions and sync it with the current hard drive. This means the site will be down for about 30-45 minutes Tuesday, 10/4 between 6am and 8am.

    Happy reading & writing!

    Apollo & DemonGoddess
