So, that’s my burning question. I am hoping we can come up with quite a list of alternatives in this thread and that it will become a stimulating resource for everyone here. wink.gif

Thus far I have been guilty of avoidance. I like to give the reader room to fill in the blanks with their word of choice. When I am cornered into naming parts my language varies. With some things I’m technical, some things I’m soft-core. I won’t do sappy romance just because I find it more amusing than erotic and I haven’t had the brazenness to go hard-core...yet.

So, what are your favourite synonyms?

I have to say that I prefer to avoid the actual naming of exact body parts; but when there is no choice, I like technical-romantic. Hard core is a major turnoff, and soft core often sounds to casual. I like the artistic way that authors around the turn of the century used vague references to explain the process. " crisis' instead of climax is one that sounds pretty good to me, because it is chaotic.

Breasts should be breasts. Nipples are nipples. If someone says boobs or tits, then I tend to giggle like a ten year old. So much for erotic.

Well, there's not a choice for mixing the bunch up, which is what I do. It depends on what kind of fic I'm writing.

Yeah, my bad. I meant to put that in there as an option and then just plain forgot. sad.gif

Some combination of technical and romantic, depending on the circumstances.

Totally depends on what I'm reading. If it's a bsdm fic then it's just wierd to have it described so delicately as "making love", but if it's a sweet fic then the phrase"He fucked him/her/them wildly" just seems out of place.

BTW- that's an impressive array of alternative ways to say penis. blink.gif

All of the above for me, depending on the fic. I'm more of a romance/technical/hardcore writer I'd say. I went with soft core, but it's really a mix.

And thanks for the penis synonyms. DarkVampWriter; gonna make use of them ^_^.

My terms are mostly technical, but sometimes I'll lean towards romantic or soft-core. It depends on whether the words are being said in the story, or the dialogue between the characters within it.

I guess that 'soft-core' is closest to what I try to do. I like to refer to body parts without either naming them directly or getting silly with the romance novel language (i.e. "his love rod" or "bare nether cheeks"). I mean, if I say "she took hold of him" or "she put him in her mouth", you're probably going to know what I mean.

I too mix it up - usually between technical and soft-core, although I am known to dabble in hard-core when writing a plotless smut piece that's even more plotless than is usual for me.

For example, I practically always use "breasts" - "tits" just sounds too 'horny teenager' and anything else just makes this particular part of the body sound really unappealing in my opinion. "Heaving mounds" on the other hand just makes me giggle.

However, if we take a look at the penis, I never use "penis" because it sounds too clinical. I usually use "cock" or work around the problem in the same way Big Samurai does.

For me, it depends on the other elements of the scene. I have to consider the time, the setting, and the situation. I have to consider the characters involved. What about their personalities and sexual experience in general as well as with the other person/people/thing (you never know!)? What about the nature and degree of the sexual act, and the underlying circumstances?

Different scenes call for different vocabulary. Avoidance is a good technique, and one of my favorites, but it's not always the most effective. On the other hand, there are times that I use vocabulary that I would normally wince at. If it's the best fit for the situation or what the character would say/think, then that's what I'll use.

I'm going to save DarkVampWriter's list to my hard-drive and password-protect it. I can add it to the research notes I have on male masturbation scenes.

EveKnight75,

Yes. I think you've summed up quite nicely what I strive to do as well.

I'm still wishing I hadn't forgotten to add Mixed to the choices....

I agree that a mixed choice would have been great, but I chose Hard Core. And, really, there's a simple reason. I like the word fuck. lol In my tender fics, I tend to use soft core/romantic wording, but in my PWP's, it's always fuck and cock, though I do detest the words 'tits' or 'titties'. *scowls* They aren't pretty to say and they are even uglier to read. lol

If my guys are sleeping together out of romance I prefer to keep the language softer, but if they're all out fucking just for fun it goes hard core. It all just flows better that way.

Just found this while looking about for erotical tips. Thought some of us may find it humorous/usefull/inspiring.

Genre Erotica

Romantic Erotica: "If I fuck him will he love me forever?"

Glam Erotica: "He was rich... She was famous - they were fucking."

Mystery Erotica: "Oh my god! I've been fucked!"

Crime Erotica: "She never caught me fucking her!"

Suspense Erotica: "Am I going to be fucked?"

Humor / Satire Erotica: "You call that fucking?"

Sci-Fi Erotica: "He fucked where no one has fucked before!"

Horror Erotica: "Oh my God! It's fucking me!"

Fantasy Erotica: "They fucked - and it was Magical!"

Paranormal erotica: "What the hell am I fucking?"

Fetish Erotica: "Mmmm-mmm fuck! Mmm-mmmm!" (Ball gag.)

It really depends on the story itself. Though i rarely write sex scenes (because I think I suck horribly at it) when I do mention sex, it;s usually only grazing over the subject because I'm afraid it'll compromise the rest of the story. Not only that, but certain stories need certain terminology. A harcore bondage scene cannot have the words "love buttons" in it. it just doesn't work. And you can't write a "romantic," poetic story usung the word cock. It kills the mood of the story.

Guest Agaib

I agree completely with pixagi. The mood of the story and the characters inside of it rule my vocabulary.

examples...

A scene involving a series of erotic scientific tests on his favorite test subject will result in me using very literal technical terms.

A scene involving hard core pain between two people who've grown in in the underworlds of society will make me use words like "cock" and "pussy"

A scene involving sweet love between two partners who cant help but shout eachothers names in ecstacy will result in very "corny" terms.

In any case. I guess you get the idea.

::reads and grins:: We're missing the weapon euphenisms from that list. I've used blade, sheath (foreskin) and sheathing (guess) before in writing, usually in period or fantasy pieces, and well, it's worked.

My style is romance - corn + some soft-core + much advoidance of actual name usage + whatever works. I think what makes better writers is just plain old practice, which I stress, till you find out what's effective and what's not so effective. I'd say that works for actual sex too, but I've yet to put that theory into testing.

Sere, who's probably revealing too much
