Already dealt my time with that second issue. So much fun taking a picture of myself at 1 in the morning. Then again, when you look as good as I do all the time, people are just dying to see pictures of you.

I just thought it polite to ask ^^' Some people are touchy about nicknames and such...

By the way, I loved reading the Wall of Shame. Awestruck at stupidity and the profiles are quite nice to look at.

Posted

hahaha, the profiles are a joint effort. I'm not a writer, so I asked everyone else on staff to give me something to put in the archive profiles. But the snark in the forum? ALLLLLL me.

I'll say this: Catching plagiarism from fanfictionist to fanfictionist has got to be a real chore...

It's worthwhile. Even if you're writing fan fiction, and never hope to profit from it, it's something you put time and effort into. It's a piece of your soul, and having it stolen is a violation. We get that, and we are willing to work hard to keep our site free of plagiarists.

Readers know that if they email us with a report, it will be investigated thoroughly, and it will be dealt with quickly if it is a valid report. It doesn't take thirty people reporting daily for two months to get our attention. :)

I haven't even really looked around as far as checking out stories go (a little but not a lot...) and I can tell I like this site waaay better. It feels more.... tight knit I should say? Less catty and bitchy and no bullshit about people reporting a story just because they may not like it or god forbid they had a typo or two.

But tonight/today I shall be posting up the first chapter of my best friend and I's story. That was a big thing for me in regards to looking for a new site was being allowed to co-write with my best friend. Now we know it's okay, we both sent the appropriate emails/messages and now we have the green light.

Just giving the first and second chapter a look over, as well as making sure they have a proper disclaimer and everything then it gets posted, yaay.

Not gonna lie I am a liiitttle nervous of posting on here for the first time ever. I'm just waiting for someone to come tell me how it's a pile of shit, xD No one ever really reviewed our stuff on Fiction Press - we didn't get much traffic or anything but hopefully it'll be different on here.

I'm in no way a perfect writer though, I don't even think I'm all that good, xD It's just something I like to do - especially with my best friend and it's something that's always been a part of me. Can't wait to get our original work going. =]

I'll be sure to check out more stories - both smutty and non-smutty, original and fan fiction.

I'm very satisfied right now. :)

not to worry, everyone gets worried when they post their stories to a new site. To tell the truth I was nervous myself at first. You will be welcomed with open arms! so good luck to you!

Posted

Yeah, I thought about joining fictionpress but knew that they didn't organize categories well enough... Plus, got hooked on fanfiction from someone's Latias/Requeza story (Skyward Avenue).

Say I just thought of a question, and pardon if it sounds dumb and all I just want to make sure.

If I post fanfics that I have on FF on here, is that allowed? Or do I have to take them off FF first? I kinda want to hold out on FF for as long as I can, but I don't know if posting them on two sites is allowed.

They don't have any rules demanding exclusivity to this site, VannuroRB. You have the option of featuring a story exclusively to AFF.net if you want to, but it's not required. A lot of people here have their fiction uploaded to more than one other location.

Posted

Ah that's alright then. I've only usually updated one story to one place so I didn't know if that was okay or not.

Posted

Vannuro,

Some sites do as you say, and consider that sort of thing crossposting. We don't tell you you can't post something elsewhere, once you post it here. Where you post your story aside from this site is your choice.

Okay, I was just making sure and all. Didn't want to get into trouble for not knowing something.

They should just remove the "M" rating entirely. It causes too much confusion, as it stands for "Mature" and people naturally assume that means graphic sex and violence can be included. What they really allow is Teen rated work and their TOS should reflect that. As for underage users, it's the parents' responsibility to moderate what their kids watch, listen to and read. I'm tired of these permissive morons expecting the world to bubble-wrap itself because they're too bloody lazy to actually parent their own offspring. Plopping your kid in front of a TV and going about your business is not childrearing, and the term "it takes a village" should not be taken so literally.

That being said, this can only be a good thing for AFF.net, and I hope people begin leaving more feedback to encourage writers to keep sharing their work here. One of the (only) great things about Fanfiction.net was that one is guaranteed to get some kind of helpful feedback from the audience, which helps authors determine what can and should be improved and what they're doing right. Sadly, that kind of feedback is rare here and on most other fanfiction sites.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how this is parenting issue when FF.net is for users 13+. It's for teens to join and get started on writing as well as for adults to post YA stories. That's the point. If a parent reads over their ToS and sees that MA rated stories and content aren't allowed, how is that parent being a bad parent for allowing their teen to join. The site says it's okay for their teenager to join! That it's safe for them to join. It's not plopping your kid in front of the TV and leaving them to fend for themselves. The site if for young people! Adult content has no business being on a site that welcomes minors. This isn't a parenting issue. The issue is that FF.net allows underage users to join so they should have managed their site better for the past ten years and explained to the user base that they legally aren't allowed, regardless of extra filters or extra passwords, to allow MA rated stories on their site because they chose to open membership up to minors. FF.net chose to do that, not the parents. By allowing people to post MA and allow underage membership, they risk getting into legal trouble, which is why sites like AFF and y!Gal are so insistent on keeping minors of their sites and will ban or suspend underage users.

Guest, I agree wholeheartedly. They should have moderated their site better over the last ten years.

If a parent assumes that the content of an "M" story on FFN is going to be comparable to an "M" game on the Wii/Xbox/DS/PS3 then they're completely shocked and appalled when they find that the content is actually "MA" and that their 15/16 year old has just been exposed to graphic sexual or violent content - sometimes ranging into extremely graphic (and frighteningly accurate) depictions of rape.

FFN moderation has been laughable in the past decade, but hopefully they're turning that around, and this is just a starting point for them.

I am also sad hearing about this as well..

I have been with fanfiction.net since 2006..

I have a lot of favorite authors & stories there that most likely are M rating

Freedom of expression is really an issue here.. We dont have anymore choice but to go with the flow of change...

Anyway, let's just respect what they want..

I am just happy that i found Aff..

thank you so much... =^______^=

Wellllll.....freedom of expression is all well and good, but the thing to remember is all these sites are privately owned. That means that we are obligated legally to do certain things. FFN to control their content better, and here at AFF, we actively look for, delete and BAN underagers.

I joined here after two of my (actually very tame) stories were deleted. One didn't even have sex in it yet! It was a crossover between Elder Scrolls and Inheritance Cycle. The most questionable part was a fight between my OC and the Raz'ac. The other story was a little more understandable, but it still only had some kissing and very, very soft petting (like someone just grabbed someone's butt) and some kissing. The violence in it wasn't that bad either.

Anyway... The point is, I have been looking around here and I like it already. I'm happy to have found a new home for reading and writing. I look forward to getting to know everyone better :)

I'm officially glad I moved to AFFNET a while ago. I'm removing my smut off of FFNET but keeping the non-smut on there.

I was talking to a co-worker today who asked if I'd read 50 Shades of Grey. When I said I did and asked if he knew that a story like that was posted on a site that his teenage children could read he blanched....

I'm all right with this situation but only because I'm a reader not a writer. I found that my two favorite authors post their stories here and I'm glad I don't have to search for their stories anywhere else.

The only thing I ask for is making it possible for readers to receive something like story alerts on e-mails or just something to notify that new chapters or stories of certain authors has been submitted. If you think up something like this I won't even bother about any ff.net problems. It just takes time to check on new updates every time.

Any chances that you're going to make anything like this possible?

Other than that I like this site very much.

Uh, it's not fair. I've been with FF.Net for 6 years and they're removing my stories saying it's MA. I've been falling their rules for all these years and now they're saying I'm not? That's not fair! D:

So, how do I upload stories here...and I doubt there's a Kid Icarus section at all.

I strongly disagree that it isn't in part a parenting issue. Fanfiction.net is not a kiddie site and it never has been. It's a general fanfiction site, and if it were only meant for children then they would not allow a huge chunk of the fandoms they host in the first place. It's not unreasonable to suggest that a site which seems not to want mature content to simply REMOVE the "M" rating and thus eliminate any confusion over such things. Hosting Mature rated content but expecting people not to upload mature content is two-faced, at best. They're best off just dropping the rating system down to teen and lower, if they need to devise a different standard for what "M" ratings actually mean.

And YES, it is irresponsible for parents to complain about their offspring reading mature content on a site that allows mature rated material. I'm amazed anyone would actually try to argue that. I've made it clear on my website that my stories are for mature audiences and I'll be DAMNED if any lazy, irrational, unreasonable "parent" ever gets me to censor my own work because their offspring defied my ratings and warnings.

This is not something that should even be argued about. Parents should raise their kids, not the internet. If a site wants to allow minors without a filtering system, they should not allow mature content or ratings, period. Fanfiction.net did so in an effort to draw more traffic, and it worked. Now they have turned around and decided they don't want Mature content after all, yet they contradict themselves. As I said in an earlier post, Battlestar Galactica isn't porn, yet there IS SEX AND VIOLENCE AND BLOOD. It is an "M" rated show. According to FF.net's warped standards, shows like BSG should not even be listed on their fandom list. It's bullshit.
