My thoughts while reading the dinner scene. What will wake them up.. like I said he is gay. In most adult minds Gay means probably has AIDS, "Now he is screwing my little girl?" Most parents would change their mind when what they are telling her to risk is proved to be probably true on the first time out the gate, at least in their own minds. They have a good idea their son is clean but no matter how good Tom H. Dick from the street looks a girl is ALWAYS running the risk of her life. This would even be true of their own son if as others have suggested he hooked up with Jessica then went back to Amanda.. Edit: Maybe Joe will consider dragging this out through a couple relationships each and have them at some point tell their parents to "go to hell. The only time we have been really happy was with each other. Did it your way have had the clap twice and I have lost count of the yeast infections. Not to mention the time the doc caught my Chlamydia only because of the clap symptoms and told me I am lucky to still be able to bear children." Sorry for the in quote rant but I have lived in a place where a significant portion of the population had STDs and a few of my female friends at that time did loose their chance at children because in women the symptoms for Chlamydia do not show up till well after the woman's reproductive system is compromised to the point the doctors tell her it will never happen. Her chances for a family of her own are gone. She can not bear a baby. I have sat with them as they cried and it is heart breaking even if all she was is your friend. I saw a few who were good girls but let one slick guy talk them into bed with in a year climb in the bottle and become camp sluts over the loss of a chance at a family of their own.

I think you are right my friend and things are gonna get worse for everyone I would not wish anyone that high maintenance on a rich man let alone someone who is not and has no job.

lol, I am not sure if I am reading this right. I have been busy all day and was tired when I got home and found time to read... Alan right after dinner -> Sam does not like girls. He bashes on them. Amanda at school -> Sam tried and failed to keep it up. Joe unconciously -> Sam (remember Joe is Bi nothing more needs to be said beyond he would have to have a gaydar.) add the evidence no mater how much Jack and Sam's personalities are alike Jokes, Hair, etc they are oriented sexually opposite. Sam is in the closet and not ready to come out.

About Sam, agreed, he is a dumb freshman jock... I was talking about Nick and as far as most HS kids go they are still dumb/smart enough to avoid the police before/after assaulting someone. It would be Nicks parents that would go to the police and then get the shock of their lives as all the witnesses turn on their son and say he both started it and threw the first punch. A parents eternal cry is "My kid would never do that." Forgetting that is exactly what they raised them to do or the stage of development they are at.

Not much any of us can do about others senses of humor. Tnx for the update on your progress. And I guess on the other chapter you mentioned. I lost interest in that story long ago and quit reading it, lol.

If he went after Jack, pressing any kind of charge is a dangerous game. If something illegal happens while YOU are committing a crime the charge can be leveled against YOU the person initially committing a crime. EXAMPLE: A person robs a store and the shop keeper draws a gun and accidentally kills a bystander, the person robbing the store can be charged with that death. It is possible that Nick could, as funny as it sounds, be charged with assaulting himself.

Just a friend, who is claiming to be a boy friend after only a week? If he had known her longer than that there would be no need to explain who he is to one of her brothers. After all until now Alan was always with her and he would have talked about Sam as either a friend or someone he liked less to his BROTHER sooner. The conversation would have gone more like, "Yeah, you remember the guy I told you about who...." The reason for the stereo type is that it is how most of them act irl. When 80% of a group act like Neanderthals it is a bit hard to blame writers for painting them with that brush. Especially when he has already laid out the evidence to support it.

I would lower that estimate... review what you know about him. He is a freshman, jock that is making the baseball team take notice. IE he has been a jock for some time. I remember them developing the "I am better than everyone else," mentality around 6th or 7th grade that is 2 to 3 years to grow into it and being praised while all his peers (freshmen) are still at the bottom of the stack? Add in it took him 1 week to grab the new fresh meat that became available once she started hanging at the mall and you have a player, in the wrong sense. I could be wrong but I would not bet on it. He is exactly what she accused Alan of being. After the girl for sex and nothing more would be my guess. She has been having sex for a while, has shown that she is diverse in it (handcuffing someone to their bed for sex is not something your average freshman girl would do.) so is probably good at it. But I would bet that he is keeping a couple other girls on the line at the same time because he did not take the time to get to know her as a person just jumped in on the girl who needs IT.

girls who are moving from a relationship to another "just to feel love" typically end up regretting it. And everything happens much faster in high school. Jocks are the worst relationships for a rebound. They think it is their right to sleep with as many girls as possible at the same time for the most part. And honestly as I indicated above. I am surprised that she did not end up earning the school slut reputation hanging at the mall to recover from being horny and rejected.

Good chapter. I really liked it I did have one thought about the argument with mom. I would have had only one question to ask. "Mom, why would a girl who is used to getting all the sex she wants, any time she wants be coming home happy from the mall, where a lot of guys go to troll for a quicky?" I was thinking that not only all during that argument but before it too, and had to share it. Believe me I am not knocking Joe's writing. I really like it.

I have noticed that at different points in the story Jack has seen his brother and sister differently. One chapter they look just a like. Then in another Alan looks like dad and Amanda looks like mom, yet no one looks at mom and dad and thinks they are brother and sister. Most people on the street will see what they expect to see. A married couple pushing a stroller if it reaches that point. I have seen couples that greatly resembled each other and ones that looked nothing alike. In the ones that look alike I always assume he looked for someone like dear old mom while she looked for someone like dear old dad. We tend to pick among racially alike people for our mates most often anyway. That is why we develop racial looks. That person is a Hindi, that one is Italian, those are Russian. I was watching a show I watch regularly a while back and there was a scene with what was supposed to be a choir from a Greek Orthodox Church. I know the way that church operates. I stopped the video and looked at the kids. It may have been a school choir but not one from a Greek Church. I identified orientals(could not give an exact race), kids that were obviously German, and out of the ten or so in the choir only like 4 looked Greek to me. But those kids all looked like brothers and sisters so I looked at the credits in the end. None of them were related to each other.

Unlikely since Amanda just revealed something she deliberately kept hidden from Alan for months because it would hurt his feelings.

I do not see it happening either. I think it might be something dad might fear though when or if he finds out the particulars of that last argument. Especially if Jack tells him he can not watch the twins any more because Amanda is making passes at him. As for love an hate I have always said the the opposite of either one is not the other but apathy or ambivalence. Passion is passion and the correct or incorrect action can change ones opinion on someone. If you just do not care or feel absolutely nothing for someone there is almost no chance that it will change.

With an obvious argument between Alan and Amanda dad is bound to find out what that is about and he may give up. Better to have one son on the straight and narrow than both doing sis.

More than that. The primary format of the High School day has changed in that time. I skipped my 30th class reunion last year. There were no double periods in general. Some individual classes may have had them but the schools majority population changed classes every 55 minutes with a 15 minute break for 'brunch' and 30 minute or 1 hour lunch (depending on school district), 5 days a week. It was possible to pick up morning and/or afternoon bonus periods for academics but it was normally morning if you were in band and afternoon for sports, pep, drill, etc. We went 9 months and had summer vacations. There were also year round districts but I do not know much about them.

Don't know how Joe will work it out. I wait. Honestly I can not figure where he was going in/with this one. When I have no idea or prediction, that is when reading is the most fun for me. I figure most writers out quick. That is what comes from writing according to the rules.
