I think you can do at least three layers before things start getting confusing.

Like the narrator isn’t aware that he’s the main character. Or when the final girl accidentally kills the author and dooms everyone.

She steeled her resolve and there was low muttering  behind the door. Her finger on the trigger and then it slipped oh crudmuffin. She thought as the sound of someone hitting the desk and seemed to resound from everywhere at once.

She swung the open the door as everything slowly bled the color of blood. There was a person there slumped over bleeding out from her accidental discharge. She hurried over but it didn’t take a medical genius to figure out the cause of death. A clean heartshot as blood pooled upon the paper they were clearly writing

She spied the last words upon the page and they were hers.
