haha omg. yeah I think we all do that. The funny thing is when I am writing I like the idea of making my readers have that reaction , and then when I'm a reader I forget about that.
    @Cuzosu
and that sucks about your step sister, but you are right it's not your problem, and there's nothing 'insensitive' about creating a boundary with someone who you can't trust

Didn't you have this posted up some years ago? (I thought I remembered reading a looooong time ago). Now I'm going to have to read it!

Bored_Straight, thanks! It's just been a crazy year altogether, but I'm on Day 8 and 20,001 words, so we'll see! I may pull it off yet, if I can keep up the 2500 words a day goal I set myself. I like a cushion...
botticelliangel, all I can say is that it's addictive. You get nothing for doing this except a messy freaking draft that's usually half done and full of holes, but it's a glorious mess. I'm still tidying last year's draft and it may, just may, be worth showing to a publisher. I've surprised myself.

You know, it must be that time of year or something. This one was claiming "adoption" which hadn't happened. What REALLY happened is this person was impatient with the author for not updating fast enough.
    Profile

You notice he's claiming abandonment? Well, the author is active. Both on FFN and AFF. She also happens to be a BUSY person IRL. Perhaps the fact that she ignored his pestering should have been a clue, no?
This all goes back to the fact that if you think a story is abandoned, and you want to continue it, you ASK THE AUTHOR first. If that person doesn't respond/ignores you, that is NOT permission. That means you leave the story ALONE.
    It's a direct copy/paste

This person didn't even take out the original author's name, or notes. By the way the story is also posted here. (Yes, it's the same author, she uses a different pen name on FFN).

See the publish date of the so-called continuation? See the comment in the summary?
Now, you cannot tell me this was a mistake. This user knew PERFECTLY well the story was not his to post.

Kinda cute how he added the story he was intending on stealing to his profile as something he was reading isn't it?
In any case, the first profile was deleted and the user banned. I actually wasn't going to go the full Hall of Shame. Well, I changed my mind. This user created a new profile, fully intended to re-post work not his own. So now he's here.
    Ain't life grand?

Oh, of course! I completely agree that a child who was previously abused should never be spanked. My POV was derived from my experiences as a child and with my own children, who might consider having rules and curfews and things abuse, but who have been loved and cherished all their lives.

I agree with BronxWench. Spanking can be used to discipline a child, and taken to far it can become abuse. I would also like to point out that it could be abuse even if done mildly depending on who the child is and what their history is. For instance using spanking as a discipline for a child that has previously been abused or neglected will always be abuse because of their past circumstances.

Thanks for your condolences. I giggled a bit when I read your description of your novella. I'd love to check it out. I owe BotecelliAngel my services first, then I will get on to you. Then, the rotation will start up again. I'm doing a chapter or so for everyone at a time in order of who asked me first. I hope that's ok!! Thanks again for being so understanding everyone.

For me, writing about the darker side of things - emotions, state of mind, violence, gore, etc. - is a way of sharing my personal experience with those in need. (Not to say I'm a war veteran or anything; I can't enlist because I can't take orders, I know that much about myself. It's just that my family hunts, so I know a decent bit about violence, bloodshed and gore anyway, and I've got a fair bit of experience with mental issues, my mom's after-rape trauma and behaviors, and whatnot, too.)
Mostly when I write dark things, it's because either I'm trying to work through something or I know someone who is. Sharing experience helps. A lot.
Sexual kinks.... I write those because I'm into bondage, I have a visceral need to be made to submit by someone I trust - my bf - because I flat can't fully relax and just go with the flow otherwise, and toys and unresolved sexual tension are wonderful ways to up the ante in an intimate situation. Exhibitionism I might write about, but frankly that's on my strictly-fantasies list because while the risk might be thrilling, getting caught...wouldn't be. And if/when I write a story with exhibitionism, I will throw that into the tale because it's something that should be thought of.
I thoroughly agree and/or understand where Attackegg and JayDee are coming from. If only there were more out there so willing to be themselves, with no limits. If society won't accept you as you are, at the very least here online where we can be relatively anonymous and share the things that really matter to us, then there's something wrong with society. And if those of us who are writing about dark things can't do so here and be accepted, then what are we supposed to do? Suppressing the need to express these - urges, cravings, whatever you want to call them - that only makes them worse.
Make sense? Not trying to call anyone unaccepting or a bigot or anything, I just am a brutally honest person and this site is somewhat of a haven for we oddballs and outcasts and deviants, and I both applaud and am grateful to you for trying to understand (a mind as open as yours is a wonderful thing). Just trying to point out where I'm coming from. And anyway, there's always the search, and you never have to click on any links except the ones required by the mods and admins, so really this place is for everybody. *frown* Perhaps a better way for me to put the above bit is: this is a place where we can go and not have to hide, where we can be one of the crowd even if not all of the crowd is okay with our particular tastes, and we treasure that.

Fucked in the head, I except. Some sorta severe serotonin deficiency perhaps. Looks out into bright happy smiling hot sunny days in the world and sees desolation and a race bent on self destruction and the fucking up of the poor majority by the obscenly rich majority. Messed up loser scumfuck who oughta be exterminated. Get some kinda sick pleasure from trying to engender visceral reactions of disgust and revulsion in their audience, maybe even enjoy the flames. Exposed to horror stories at a young age and had 'em imprinted on the psyche. Watership Down's rabbits had it tough. No desire to hurt anybody else, but find writing helps feel better sometimes, whether gory splatterbang or just warm and fuzzy.
That's just me, of course. Only me. You with the pen and the hatchet quit getting all offended. I'm sure the others who've dabbled in dismemberment fiction are all lovely well balanced people you'd be quite happy to take home to Mother. Stephen King, I think it was, did a very good essay on the nature of writing and reading horror and such. Undoubtedly there's a few other things on it as well.

    Word.
The idea that one character is less dominant because he or she is penetrated during sex is just plain wrong. That said, it's an opinion that you can work into your fics if one of your characters is defensively homophobic, and refuses to try being the recipient partner because they see that as being less "manly".

botticelliangel reacted to BronxWench in Give authors the ability to let others download their work.
Taking off my staff hat for a moment, and speaking just as an author, I would not be terribly comfortable leaving any of my original work up here if it were made easy to download it. My fandom stuff, well, it would be irritating as the hells to find it published elsewhere under someone else's name, but it's not something I could ever have published on my own for profit anyway. My original work, though... I'd be devastated. Seriously. Some of my oneshots in Originals are "outtakes" and character development bits for things I'd like to submit for publication.
I understand that the vast majority of people download something to read with no nefarious intent, and would no sooner plagiarize than they would kick a puppy. I know nothing's foolproof, and a determined thief can copy and paste just as well. I just don't see the point of a fiction archive making it easy for people to steal, not when that archive hosts original works.
That's strictly my opinion as an author, mind you, and it carries only as much weight as that of any other user here.

We were recently contacted by a well respected British publication about appearing in an article supporting Fan Fiction since we are one of the largest Fan Fiction communities out there. The following is his email to us:
I would love to have some of our more established, long term, articulate Fan Fiction Authors who are currently active (Perhaps even an Originals author as we don't JUST do fan fic) speak with him. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know via a forum PM. Alternatively, if you have not signed up for the forums, you can always send me an email at admin@adult-fanfiction.org with your pen name/link to your profile and contact information that you would like to be provided. I'd appreciate, but not require, a brief statement as to why you would like to represent the site.
I'm expecting a large response (I mean who doesn't want to be quoted in an article!) so please understand that so he is not overwhelmed, I'll be sorting through the responses and sending only a handful on to him. I will be looking for someone who, as I mentioned above, is currently active in the archive, well versed and well spoken and has been with the site for a decent amount of time.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm so excited for the recent popularity and acceptance of fan fiction! If you have a chance, make sure you check out PBS's Idea Channel episode on YouTube talking about it! They'd love for our users to sound off in the comments!

Edit: Okay! So, I've got the short list created ... of 18... I still gotta whittle down, but at least I'm getting somewhere! Please understand that due to the sheer volume of applications, it is just not a possibility for me to respond to each of you individually. It's been a pleasure getting to understand a bit of why you do what you do and I can't even begin to express how blessed I feel to have such a supportive group of people!

omg... yummy slash! Very good style and momentum. You gave just enough background info to make the porn meaningful.
Thanks. Reading this back, I think all the pertinent information about the pairing is covered before the sex, and it might work as generic gay soldier erotica. It's the first piece of slash I ever wrote, and I'm pleased with how it turned out.

::nods:: I try to read outside the fandoms I write when I can. Most of my reading time lately is taken up by moderating in the archive, but hopefully I can squeeze in a read or two.
But it is true that when you write for a niche fandom, like I myself do, reviews will be even fewer. That makes the reviews I do get even more cherished, especially if the reviewer has taken the time to offer me some helpful criticism or even to let me know what worked.

My personal favorite are the stories which are utter trash and get loads of reviews. Why? Because all the authors "buddies" review to up the count. Are the reviews meaningful? Nope, not at all. In those stories, you'd be LUCKY to see actual concrit that either hasn't been deleted by the author, or caused an attack of the reviewer by the author and his or her little friends .
When I go through the archive looking to actually read something in a fanworld I'm unfamiliar with, I'm more likely to read something with many hits and little or no reviews, than to read something with smaller hits/reviews ratio.
When I actually have the time to read, I do leave a review.

There are, honestly and all kidding aside, a number of factors, I believe.
One is going to be the definition of "constructive criticism." Some authors think that anything that tells them their story isn't perfection is a flame. They do this for the lulz, and not necessarily to improve, and those readers who like to encourage authors to improve on their craft and offer honest, thought-provoking feedback aren't welcome to such writers.
On the flip side, there are those people who think they're being constructive, when they're really serving to be destructive in the terms they use to tell the author there is a need for improvement.
Another factor is the "something for nothing" mentality. It permeates our society, so it isn't really any surprise that readers wouldn't think twice about not letting an author know that they read the story. Liked or not, they read it. I tend to think of it this way: "hits" are the number of times someone checked the book out in the card catalogue, read a few pages, and put it back on the shelf. The "hits" mean nothing to me.
The reviews, on the other hand, tell me quite a bit. They can tell me that the story was good, that it needs improvement, that it's total fluff, etc. As I am one of those who doesn't write, I can tell you that I also look at the names of the reviewers. If I recognize the names as people that read fluff fic, whose names I only see reviewing fluff pieces, and they rave about the story in their review, I'll generally leave it alone. I'm not usually in a fluffy mood. There are those rare occasions when my brain can't handle much more than fluff (say, when I had the flu), and those are the times I'll read those pieces.
The 'least loved' stories in the archive - but the most read - are generally oneshots. People read them, and -let's face it- 'fap' to them, and close the browser window. Sometimes, the readers leave TMI reviews (IMO) but at least they're giving the author some feedback about what was written.
I can honestly state that another reason readers may not leave a review may have to do with their age. DG, at the beginning of this year, had to do a massive sweep through the archive to nuke underage reviews that weren't getting deleted when the accounts were being removed for minors (details here). Being completely underage aside, younger adult readers won't necessarily leave one either. They're not at that point yet where they realize that the authors don't have to write - and even if they do write, they don't have to post it for anyone to read. Sharing it is completely up to the author of the piece.
I'll be completely forthright: I'm appalled at the lack of reviews. I understand not having a great deal of time to leave a massive review - and most authors don't want that anyway. They just want "I liked such n such" or "I didn't like thus n so" and a reason as to why a reader felt that way.
But one thing that I think keeps a good number of people from reviewing a story is not knowing what to say. Particularly if it's a very well-written piece. Readers tend to think that on a completed story, or on something that's by well-loved authors, they can't offer feedback. (Especially if they didn't like something that well-loved author did - heaven forbid you read SS/HG 'ship in HP and not like an aspect of a story by one of the big names that write in that genre.)
The bottom line is that I wholeheartedly agree - reviews support the authors. Sadly, a lot of authors don't have tough skin and throw tantrums in their author's notes. (Yes, we've seen this - I see it on cleanup quite a bit.) Not knowing how an opinion is going to be received can sway the choice of the reviewer to leave it. Just as all of the authors in the archive take a chance on putting their work out there for scrutiny, the reviewers take a chance on leaving their opinion of the work.
But I think it's a chance that should be taken, given that the author put him/herself out there first. All a reviewer is being asked to do is respond to the author's effort. After all, if you took the time to read it, telling the author you did so won't hurt.
