BronxWench reacted to JayDee in AFF's Tales from the Shoutbox Review Thread 2015
From the Ashes by Tahn
This was another story with a good bit of emotional impact. I don’t mind admitting I hear tears in my eyes at a couple points. The idea around the ending was pretty cool, it certainly got around the lack of touching otherwise.
Snap by George Glass
I did get an idea what was coming there, which goes to show how well you did the foreshadowing! Definitely spooky. It’s funny, I like violent stories normally, but I’m pretty glad it wasn’t detailed here.
Nightmare’s Dream by Peverted Pages
I thought that was pretty damn sexy! Yup, time to remember that vampires are monsters, not glitter salesmen. One odd thing, where it says “grabbed her hair**” with the ** I scrolled down for a ** footnote!
What is the meaning of ** in this context?
Death has an Ugly Face by Tahn's 2nd story. The fiend!
It also works read in the voice of Bonny from Family Guy. Not the first character to face death with a knob in the hand. See, this is how you do 2nd person seriously and give it good atmosphere. ‘nother campfire classic in the making!
All Hallow’s Eve by ThinLizzie
Is it bad that I’d rather have ghouls knocking on the door than kids trick or treating? I mean, come on! Even the guard marmots hide when they tromp up the path. I read this aloud too! The old ways aren’t so bad. Well... some of them. Poem shows the counterpoints skilfully.
--
Having a story in in this collection has brought more hits than my last two original fic uploads, but I suspect rather less for some of you with the big original fanbases. I hopes I am not dragging you down!

I still have Signs going around in my head. The rest of you can suffer too. Go on. Listen to it.

Glad to help! I haven't been going through nitpicking or anything, but that one stuck out so I thought you'd like to know! I always find new typos in my work if I don't read it for a while and then re-read, sadly.
Thank you for your review! Frankly, given the eagerness which Shannon took to the skills of a Succubus, someone needs to check just how her time in the torture pits of Hell was spent . I suspect she made the damned scream and groan a lot and nobody looked too closely as to what she was doing. I'll have to come up with a real demon name for Sarsa (Her full made up name is, uh, Sarsa Parilla.) Sadly, google says Eusyram is already taken. Might have to be Eusnialliv.
'k, I got more to read tonight

I want to thank everyone who read and appreciated the humor in my story... I'm not a very funny person so I wasn't sure others would get it so this is a pleasant surprise And Jaydee thanks for catching that typo... I don't know what was wrong with me but I glanced over a whole bunch of them that I didn't catch until I saw that>.<

Joe, thank you! I'm glad it achieved scary, since neither the Sidhe nor the drui are terribly pleasant. And of course, blood had a great deal of power...
JayDee, you always make me laugh with your reviews, and you probably don't want to know the Black Sword jokes riffing through mt mind as I wrote. Well, maybe you do... But yes, Teagan managed to pull out some serious badassery at the end. Best place for it, really. And thank you!
Tahn, thank you! This one was a straight up original, but I may have to return to it at some point, if only because I think Dubhlainn wants some more time on this side of the Veil. And we might want to see where Teagan and Daithi wound up.

So, I promised you an embarrassing review in here. Don't judge me... wait; you already do. So, it's whatevs...
For the longest, there's never been much writing that... arouses me. I might read a few scenes and be all "ooh, that's kinda hot" but nothing more. Maybe a "I wish that would happen to me" type feeling. And almost always, I end up blushing, anyway!
This is may have been the second or third time I've read something to where I had to close my legs to calm myself! Dear gods, that was well written! And when I said I could feel what Valentina felt... I meant it! Just... ugh; I hate going into details because I'm blushing just thinking about it! The voyeur scene... loved! The garden scene; holy hell, the garden scene! *flails*
This is so good; for the first time being on the site, I wouldn't mind it if this story was PWP!
Valentina is a great character. I really enjoy that she thinks things through and understands the consequences of her actions. While reading, I really wanted her to not get in trouble for what she did but I knew that in reality, something like poisoning forty men and then burning their bodies wouldn't go unnoticed!
I love elves, now. My God, why have I neglected elven stories?! Not to say that any other story about elves would be like this one but it just makes me think of what all I'm missing!

I just posted my chapter. Probably correctly.
This is the first sex-free story I've ever posted on AFF (although it's definitely not for children). So Chrissy, thanks for inspiring me to take a stroll outside my comfort zone. And thanks, of course, for organizing this thing.

We are all ridiculously awesome, to quite a favorite game character. I am loving all the stories thus far, and I want to vote for everyone. Just sayin'...

BronxWench reacted to JayDee in JayDee's Review Reply Thread (LOTR)
Ginny Weasley and the Hospitality of the Orcs takes the hoary old crossover special of a character magically transported to Middle Earth (admittedly, more commonly an OFC with incredible skills and beauty) and fucks it.
While a reviewer elsewhere was happy to see the Orc use oil for the anal so as to avoid chafing himself, the poor dear, the AFF review is as follows:
Thanks for the review! Yeah, the Orcs pretty much succeeded entirely via element of surprise. The teachers or even less-surprised students should be able to thrash them pretty soundly, the run-of-the-mill LOTR Orcs aren't all that challenging, no wonder the Urak-Hai look down on them!
I guess for a follow up I could Bamf Galadriel amongst Death Eaters over in the Potter universe. "...and within seconds, the Death Eaters were all dead," yeah, too short, maybe.
Thanks again!

It is "Differently Sane" King Ludvig's famed black stallion Cocotte, in the role of the horse Grane.
So Magus' father, surely? Or is this Horse mpreg just to make BW whimper?

SGS, you've been around long enough to know that I'm pagan, and have been all my life. So yes, treating my beliefs cavalierly will put my back up. Consider it as having poked me.
And warlocks are not magical, nor are witches, druids, shamans or witch doctors. I'll disregard the flippancy of the tooth fairy, in the spirit of being helpful. Witches practice magic. Witch doctors practice magic to some extent. Druids and shamans do not practice magic. They are more akin to priests and/or oracles. Warlocks are not a magical class in the real world, WoW notwithstanding. But none of them are magical creatures, unlike the fey, who are magical creatures.
You can choose to disregard the real-world definitions of these roles, but in that case, you should not come here and ask for assistance with researching these things. All you do is frustrate those of us for whom these things have significance. Instead, consult the WoW Wiki.

That is actually a very insensitive statement... but you probably don't realize that so I'm going to let it pass. But do keep in mind, there are still practitioners of non-judeo-christian religions. Like... Druids and Wiccans, even worshipers of Odin who might take offense to that statement above. So you're handling someone's religion here, of course people are going to get touchy.
I think the main concern people have here is that you're going to shit all over someone's religion in the name of fiction, which is a legitimate concern. (i know this is contrary to my who cares he's writing fiction statement, but admittedly I was a few glasses into the evening, and oh the flippant shit I say when tipsy.)
I would suggest picking up some of the viking sagas or early Irish and Welsh texts. You can get translations of a few of them on Amazon for free. And visit your local library. If you think about the most successful author of what I call super fantasy (elves, orcs, goblins etc.) it's Tolkien and the guy was a medievalist who borrowed heavily from Viking sagas (There is literally a saga about a guy named Frodi who has to destroy a ring),
Also, I think it might be more impactful if you just have one set of gods you focus on and write a story about infighting among them. It would also mean less research for you, (compelling fantasy is research).

I think my frustration here is a result of your asking for factual backup of what's largely a fictional concept. The Orc shamans from WarCraft 3 and WoW don't have any resemblance whatsoever to a real-life shaman, nor do the goblinoid witch doctors have any grounding in reality. Hence my frequent advise to you to make it up and stop looking for factual references for something when factual isn't what you want anyway. Just read the WoW Wiki instead and go from there to avoid getting sued.

BronxWench got a reaction from JayDee in Am I allowed to have an index?
You can put them in the main story summary, which avoids the chapter-spoilers. That's perfectly fine. You could even put them all at the top of the first chapter, if they don't fit in the summary field, which is only 240 characters.
As long as they are somewhere a reader will see them, and know what to expect in the course of the story, we're good. The reasoning is that certain things are triggers, and we don't want readers getting blindsided by running into content they'd not willingly have read.
And in the forum thread, if you wanted to include them in the index, next to each chapter, that's absolutely fine as well. Since readers would find the index url after reading a chapter, it certainly wouldn't be a spoiler for them.

BronxWench reacted to PervOtaku in holy/celestial warriors
Your entire premise is off, because valkyries aren't warriors of the Norse gods, they are grim reapers for fallen human soldiers. I don't really recall any myths where god or the gods have an army of warriors. Such servents tend more to be messengers if anything. Most wars in the old myths where the gods are involved are proxy wars where each god choses a human side to represent them and helps their guys out in much smaller ways, or battles that are so big that only the gods themselves can fight in them.
The view of Norse valktries or Judeo-Christian angels as a army of heavenly warriors comes more from modern pop culture, which usually borrows names from old myths more than it does portray the myths faithfully.
