READ ME: Validation/Password Reset Issues

I’ve emailed you the links, and sorry for the delay. -
Unfortunately, the number of views a story receives is not a filterable field. Stories appear on each subdomain’s home page in order of the most recent update or initial posting.

Torture is very subjective. What might be fine for one reader could be too much for another reader. That is why we require proper tagging on stories with content that can be upsetting. This forum, however, is not the place to post snippets of work. The forum is the right place to ask for a beta reader, or to create a review reply thread where you can chat with readers, or to look for advice from other authors like you’re doing here. All story content belongs in the archive, though, so please don’t post snippets here or the forum staff will remove those snippets. Now, with all the staff stuff said, time to wear my writer/reader hat… I don’t like to read about torture simply for the sake of torture. It has to be done for a reason, whether as a punishment or as an act of revenge, or because the torturer is clearly sociopathic and sadistic. Or maybe the MC is being trained by way of torture? Whatever the reason, it has to be consistent and somewhat believable. But that’s strictly my personal taste. I don’t mind torture, if it fits the story, and doesn’t trip up any of my personal squicks.

I don’t think that’s been restored yet. I know there is still an issue with the punctuation, and even I can’t edit that.

I’ve sent you the activation and password reset links via email. -
I was able to remove the “39” but I can’t include the apostrophe. That may be one of the characters that is still disabled. We’re having issues with punctuation in summaries as well. We are aware that there are some things that remain disabled, even for staff, while our coder completes the work of fully securing the site, so bear with us. It will get fixed, I’m certain.

Does the new password fit the new parameters? The system is very specific: Password rules recap: Between 12-18 letters and/or numbers long, case sensitive. NO punctuation, spaces, or special characters allowed. Do NOT use your old password, or let Google make a strong password full of forbidden characters for you. -

I’ve resent the links to you. It seems that activating the account and resetting the password work best when done together, so I’ve included both links in the email. -

I’m not finding that pen name in the records. Perhaps you could email us at tos_team@adult-fanfiction.org from the email address used to create the account? I can verify by email address, and it’s more private than posting oyur email address here on a public forum. -

I’ve emailed you new links. It seems to work best when you validate and then reset the password, which is why I send both. -

Do NOT invoke that which you cannot banish! Sweet merciful gods of my fathers…

Therein lies the issue for me in my role as moderator. It’s not the work of the posting author, no matter how you spin it, and therefore it’s not allowed on AFF per our Terms of Service. Other fiction archives might have a different opinion, but because we are an age-restricted site, we are likely to come under closer scrutiny in general, and there’s no sense in compounding things by letting people post work they didn’t actually write themselves. Maybe someone needs to start a fiction archive/website for AI-generated fiction? Bring a little transparency to the matter, so to speak?

Apologies for the paywall thing. I forget about that all the damned time, probably because I’m on the far side of middle aged.

The above is exactly why I don’t think AI has a place in actual writing, even if it’s fan fiction. The New York Times did a comparison of AI-generated essays/writing prompts versus those written by actual children. (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/12/26/upshot/chatgpt-child-essays.html ) Judy Blume, the author, participated. Give it a try, and see how well you do.

An AI will never provide the insight of a human editor, who can identify what human readers will want to read. It’s pretty basic, actually. Spell checkers and grammar checkers, no matter how sophisticated, can’t read for content like a human. What you’re thinking about is the proofreading stage, which comes at the very end of the process, after the editor and author have beaten that gruesome draft into something resembling a real book. (And even then, the author can overrule the proofreader because conversation is not grammatically perfect, after all.)
-
I’m not entirely sure AI could ever replace editors. Until I went through the editorial process, I had only a rudimentary understanding of what was involved. There’s a huge amount of work beyond the simple grammar and spelling check, and looking for overuse of common words. A really great editor gets into your character’s heads, and will question you about why a character did something, when it seems like they might have been more inclined to do this other thing. Or they will spot chronological issues, or perhaps they just want to comment that they found a particular bit you wrote to be emotionally powerful. Whatever it is, AI can’t do that for you because it requires sentience and emotional involvement, neither of which AI possesses at present. And the mice would like you to know that it took sentience in their test subjects to arrive at that answer. And fjords.
