  1. There were a few reviews that I wanted to take the time to respond to, so here they are!

    Haunted Prompt:

FairySlayer - I have a friend who can't go anywhere near places where a number of people died because of the voices, I just took it one step further that the ghosts follow in this piece. She hates it and it truly drives her nuts!

    Witch Prompt:

JayDee - You have no idea how hard it was to write just 140 characters! It truly was an exercise in restraint, but you're right, the line totally works in the bedroom!

pittwitch - LoL - Aren't most men wanton?

    Candy Prompt:

    pittwitch - Thank you!

Melrick - LoL, yes... I get it, funny :D

FairySlayer - Thanks for the comments on the timing. I wasn't sure if it went too fast, so I appreciate the validation! The singing was a tiny bit corny, true, but the damn thing was running through my head and I couldn't not put it in!!!

Asexual Biped - Perhaps I made it too obscure, I was trying to relay that sex wasn't an option because protection wasn't available... Ah well, I guess the candy aspect works as well!

  2. I'm up for anything. I can be contacted through email. Just go to my account and I'll make it public. :)

I mean my forum profile. I was going to do it for my AFF account profile, but I'm retarded and can't figure out how to make the email visible there. :\

Because of spam bot crawlers, you can't make it visible on the archive side, so it's not you don't worry!

    TOS Review: Minors

As you may have noticed last week, I did a review of part of AFF's T.O.S. regarding plagiarism. To ensure that everyone is aware of the major aspects of our Terms of Service, we will be doing a weekly column here in the news. This weeks topic will be minors on the forum/archive.

I think we've done a very good job being clear on the fact that you must be 18 years old to access the site through the splash page, age verification page, putting the RTA tag on our pages, as well as the TOS for both the archive and forums. Since we are an adult themed site, this is something that all users need to be aware of and we can always use an extra set of eyes. Having any users under the age of 18 puts the site in a very precarious legal position. I can't tell you how many times over the years we've dealt with angry parents threatening legal action despite our many efforts to keep them out.

I've heard all the excuses: "I just wanted to share my fiction," "I didn't know," "I'm not in the US, your rules don't apply," to "It's not fair." The fact of the matter is it does not matter. Unless you are 18, you are not welcome on AdultFanFiction.Net.

We know that kids will be kids and ignore the many warnings, but for those that have ignored them and are reading this: We take your presence here seriously. We will find you. If you don't believe me, take a look at the statistics as of September 6th, 2010 found here. If you are a minor reading this, I ask that you turn yourself in to our moderator team.

To all of our users that waited until they were 18? Thank you very much. Keep an eye out for any possible minors and please feel free to report it to our moderators so that we can investigate it and take appropriate action.

    Outlined below are the consequences:

    Minors

    First time offense

User is deleted, and databased so we have record

    Second offense

User is deleted, emailed and told not to return until after they're 18

    Third offense

    User is deleted, re-emailed

    Fourth offense

Account is taken over by the moderating team. As part of the take over, we edit the profile and put in sarcastic humor detailing why we took over the profile. Author is not allowed to return for a year. Where we've actually been able to find the true birthday, the return date is given in the profile.

If they're persistent enough to come back after that, then the ban is permanent.

    Posting for minors

Since minors aren't allowed on the site, posting for minors is also not allowed.

Author is deleted, no notification, nothing. If part of a writing group, the writing group is deleted, as well as any of the individual profiles for authors IN the writing group. These authors are allowed to come back, with the understanding that if they do it again, they will be deleted again, and at that point not allowed to return.

What determines 18 years old as the minimum age requirement

US Laws determine this. The site is hosted in the US, so age restriction laws (based on content and age restricted materials, which which means the users MUST be 18 years of age or OLDER) for users in the US apply to the site. It doesn't matter what age of consent is outside of the United States, as that is not relevant to how we have to work with age restrictions within the site. So, the rule of thumb here is, if one is old enough to vote in the United States, one is old enough to use the site. If you live elsewhere than the US, the minimum age still applies, whether or not your country allows this access at a younger age.

    Tech Updates from DemonGoddess

    Clean up Update

The following top levels have been created, or will be shortly:

    • in books subdomain - Twilight
    • in cartoon subdomain - Kim Possible (coming soon)
    • in comics subdomain - DC 'Verse Comics, DC 'Verse Cartoons, DC 'Verse Movies
    • in xmen subdomain - Marvel 'Verse Comics, Marvel 'Verse Cartoons, Marvel 'Verse Movies

To help facilitate story moving, here is what can be done. This is something requires a member assist.

Email to technicalsupport@adult-fanfiction.org, subject Cleanup req

Where a subcategory does not yet exist (this applies to the DC and Marvel top levels), start with the category req for it.

Then, link to the story you need moved to the new top levels. Re-add the story to the category if it already exists, if not, I will email you when it's created, and then add it then. DO NOT delete the old story. I need that for some of the data, which I will then add to the new upload. After I'm done with that, moving any attached reviews, and adding the story rating that was pre-existing, I will delete the old story. Alternatively, this can all be posted in the category requests forum. Once I've finished with any data migration needed done for that request, expect to see the topic closed. I would also ask where there are stories in process of migration already (such as Angel in the tv subdomain), that those users do this as well.

If everyone who's affected by this can help and follow the instructions above it will make the process go a lot faster as it means I only need to move reviews and rates, and change the dates to reflect the original add date, also create subcats where needed. None of which takes all that long. If I have to move each story, it can take hours depending on how many chapters I have to move etc. So your help is greatly appreciated!!

    Forum Updates

There was a minor update installed on 10/28. As always if you notice any bugs, please let us know.

If I have time this weekend, I have found a new arcade system that will work with the major upgrade we did recently and will be installing it. That way you will have games to play yet again!!!

  4. I have also been trying to get my password, and it won't accept my e-mail address. Could you help me out?

When you say it's not accepting your email address, what do you mean? Do you get an error message?

Assuming your pen name is the same, I triggered your password to be sent to the email on file.

  5. Status Updates from Apollo

    TOS Review - Plagiarism

Due to a recent uptick in plagiarism found on the site the Admin and Moderator Staff feel it necessary to revisit the topic and ensure everyone understands what constitutes plagiarism.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines plagiarism as "the wrongful appropriation or purloining and publication as one's own, of the ideas, or the expression of the ideas… of another" while the Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines it as "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work."

How does this relate to Fan Fiction and AFF? As I said earlier, we have seen an increase in the amount of plagiarism that our sweep team finds while going through the Archive. This can constitute as anything from the traditional copy and paste that most people think of when we discuss plagiarism to writing an unauthorized sequel. Here is a list of things that AFF considers plagiarism as well as how we handle it:

Direct copy and paste from another author's story: This also includes wishing that a person posted to AFF and putting up their story on AFF. Even if you put up a disclaimer such as, "This is so &so's fiction. They don't post here, so I'm gonna post it for them," it is still plagiarism. If we find that you have directly copy and pasted someone's story, you will be added to AFF's Hall of Shame. No questions asked. We will put you out there for all the world to see you as the thief that you are. We will also ensure that the administrators and moderators of other archives that we work with have your information so that they can make sure that you aren't in their archive as well.

Cobble-Fic, or taking bits and pieces from other people's stories and publishing it as your own: If we find one and have enough evidence indicating that the user has stolen from other authors, the offending author is deleted from the archive and is never welcome to return.

Continuation of a story with out permission from the original author or a sequel of a story with out permission from the original author: This is also includes taking over a 'abandoned' story. Even if the author hasn't touched the story in years, continuing the story without permission is considered plagiarism. We hide the continuation or sequel and send an email to both the original author and and the one doing the other story to ensure that it is authorized. If it is authorized, the story is unhidden. If it is not authorized, the story will be deleted. If it continues, we will delete the author.

No citations of quoted works such as songs, poems, novels, etc: The author is emailed and left a review on the review board since some authors are ignoring the email and given 1 week to correctly cite the items. If the author does not fix it with in 1 week, we will hide the story and the author will have 30 days to correct it. If after 30 days it is still not fixed, the story will be deleted.

Plagiarism is very serious and we treat it as such. If you want your account to remain active, just don't do it. When in doubt, either don't do it, cite it, or contact the original author. If you are still in doubt, feel free to contact us and we will help make the determination.

On a positive note, our staff is also always on the look out to ensure that your works aren't posted else where without your permission! To give an example - Our staff recently found a site that with out the owners knowledge had some of our Author's work posted with out their permission. The owner and I worked together to ensure that the stories were removed and everyone walked away happy! As I said, we are very serious about plagiarism and it does work both ways.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our very second prompt, "Witch!" We have 7 responses so far this week! 6. Seems a little insensitive to the idea that a writer can be motivated to write more quickly and confidently when he/she receives feedback. I don't understand how it was being interpreted that way. I mean, I update when I finish a chapter, no matter what. Then again, yes, if I don't get any reviews after an update, I will likely be discouraged and in turn take longer to update, because it suggests my last update wasn't as good as the other things I've posted. But even if I do get that way, I'll still update IF I finish, there's just less of a chance that I'll finish because I'm a little put off by a story that no one likes enough to review. I guess you could say I feel like I'm generally better than that. So yes, my update frequency can be based on reviews, depending on whether I personally still care about the story or not. I'm a social motherfucker, other people liking what I write is what makes me care, and if they don't, I'll stop caring. That's what it means.

I understand where you're coming from - Reviews are an Author's lifeblood and keep us going. I know it's always disappointing when your hits jump up 200, but not a single person takes the time to review. While you may not view what you had on your story as review demands or holding the story hostage, it can still come off that way. Your wording is a lot less extreme than some, but it does still fall under that category.

Asking for reviews is allowed. You can always place something like "You're reviews are always appreciated!" or "Please read & review" at the end of the chapter. Or if you want to indicate that reviews keep you motivated to keep writing, "Reviews let me know that I'm not just writing for myself." Just be careful to keep any mention of updating frequency etc out or mentioning a specific number needed to see an update. If you ever have a question if something is allowed or not, you can always ask any of the staff, we'd be glad to help.
