  1. *slaps Agaib upside the head* That only makes things worse! *sighs* You stay by the body while I get some big strong medical security guys to carry her in. When you see them approach, run. And don't make that mistake again. As for pregnancy, I've got nothing for personal experience. Just try to relax, keep the kitchen fully stocked, and make sure you get plenty of food, exercise and rest. Try to avoid stress and devote your time to activities that relax you. Meditation doesn't work for everyone. Maybe writing in a nice, quiet room is your thing. I think fluid intake is something to watch out for. Try to avoid caffeine and diuretics. Stick to water (but not the flavored bottles), juice, and milk. Ooh, and chocolate berry smoothies really did the trick for my cousin when she was pregnant both times. Well, that's all I can think of. Congrats!
  2. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It causes extremely low fertility, facial hair, thinning of scalpal hair, deepening of voice, extra testosterone production, and insulin redirection. The discovery of this hormonal discovery is still relatively new and they learn more each day. I rarely get a period. The most frequently I've ever managed is a 5-week cycle without hormonal control pills. Even then, it lasts around 3 days, 4 if I'm lucky, but I bleed so much that I end up with mild anemia. Good thing I like steak. PCOS can also cause hypoglycemia-turned-hyperglycemia a.k.a diabetes. It's not so much your health regimen as it is that the insulin attacks your ovaries instead of your blood sugar. Your body produces extra testosterone in self-defense. That means that insulin injections could potentially backfire on you and make the PCOS worse. PCOS can also increase your risk of other illnesses related to the female reproductive system, such as cervical cancer. I actually have one of the worst cases of PCOS any of my endocrinologists have ever seen. The only area where I lucked out is my voice. I do have a deep voice, but it's no longer masculine. It was masculine until I was 15, then it cleared up and settled. Now I have an excellent alto singing voice, people constantly tell me I have a pleasing voice whenever I speak, and straight/bi guys ask me not to quietly moan into my mocha expresso (but that just encourages me, doesn't it?) My endocrinologist can only check up on me every 3-4 months. Sometimes it's not enough, but I have to make do. If your symptoms go nasty again, go to emergency immediately. When I was 12, my legs would become completely numb as a side effect of an absent period, so that's what my parents did. Meanwhile, I'm going to hope it's not the worst for you. Once your gyn diagnoses you, you'll be hooked up with a specialist who'll have a better idea of what to do. Look at it this way - you'll actually be able to deal with getting tons of meds and frequent medical exams. Most people can't.
  3. DO IT! While you're at it, let everyone know that you're her un-appreciated, self-proclaimed beta. God knows she needs a super-beta.
  4. That's because too many of them are "marriage law" or "truth or dare" fics. Then there are the fics where Hermione gets both of 'em. Personally, I'd rather read a Fred/George, leave Hermione to Ron, and hope that the twins didn't give Ron any advice. Those two lovebirds argue enough as it is, and it's time to channel that pent-up sexual tension into a more pleasant form of foreplay.
  5. In that case, we can call it a social experiment where the readers are the test subjects. I, for one, would love to read more about every dictated moment of Dr. Tickledick's exploits.
  6. It's not that I don't like rape fics. If it's handled realistically and doesn't become wangsty, I can actually enjoy it. The problem is that way too many people equate incest to rape, then take the stigma of rape and apply it to incest. They don't bother to differentiate. That's why I prefer to read consensual incest. It deals with just incest without adding rape to muddle the equation, and allows readers to discern the difference between the two. If they don't like it, fine, but at least it's the incest they'll be disliking rather than rape or sex between minors.
  7. Adults talking down to kids and kids hating it? Count me in. I'm not a warm or fuzzy person by any means, but kids tend to like me. Why? Because I have never talked down to them once, no matter how much younger than me the child was. Other adults would get pissed off at me for doing so, take me aside and give me warnings about how it's inappropriate and the kids wouldn't understand. Bullshit! I hated it when adults talked down to me or acted as if I wouldn't understand. If anything, kids understand better. Most adults lose their sense of empathy and their minds narrow as they grow up, and start to regain their empathy and open-mindedness as senior citizens, when they realize how foolish they had been. Sad but true. As far as I'm concerned, I have reasonable limits. I don't bring up sex with pre-pubescents. I don't ever curse in front of anyone (I don't curse out loud, period.). However, if a kid's parents are arguing a lot, I will explain the concept of divorce if the kid asks about it. Boo-hoo to the aunts and uncles who disapprove about bringing up the topic. The kid matters more and I'm positive s/he will need to understand the concept, and the difference between argument and divorce, if only for peace of mind. BTW, if some irate parent starts to harass me, would the choir be willing to back up my vocals? Just asking for future reference. As for the video game concept; I watched Bowling for Columbine in a high school psych class. I may not like Marilyn Manson's music, but I think I fell in love with his verbal eloquence after watching that interview. The only reason they didn't attack Ozzy Osbourne instead is because the parents grew up with him. If anything he's worse because he bites the heads off live animals as opposed to Manson who'd rather not harm a living creature. Despite what we'd like to believe, human beings are not a rational species on the whole. I'll have to go with Max on this one.
  8. That's a really bad reason to write a fic, unless you're writing on commision and getting paid well. Which you're not. Might I suggest contacting the reader you wrote this for and having him/her review it?
  9. I can read anything because I can stomach anything. Scat, watersports, cannibalism, necrophilia, rape, mutilation of bodies, mutilation of the English language, girls having sex with snakes and horses, boys buggering their dogs, a 12-year-old having sex with a 60-year-old... I'm sorry. Am I rambling? Like I was saying, I can handle anything, but that doesn't mean that I like everything. I'm not fond of wading through bad English, but it does help me find people who are looking for a beta and need one badly. I work in small fandoms, so my offers are usually appreciated. I'm not fond of scat, golden showers, human urinals, or rimming, but the mention of it in a fic isn't going to deter me. I'd rather not read if they're primary themes, but a few acts in a fic isn't a problem. I can actually find necrophilia sentimental when it's someone humping the corpse of their recently deceased lover/spouse. I know. I'm sick and twisted. At least I'm not a true fan of necrophilia (no offense to those who are). My kink is consensual incest between two people close in age, and even then they have to be in their mid-teens at their youngest.
  10. Did I mention that I can't stand self-help books and seminars on "How to Raise Your Child/Teen"? They lump us all into one category and then teach parents how to "deal with us" and how to "solve our problems". Um, no. You can't stereotype us because we don't all fall into a stereotype. In fact, the majority of us don't fully fall into a specific stereotype when we're at home. Children and teenagers are multi-faceted individuals, same as adults. What works for one person will not work for another. The parent has to take the time to really get to know the child, and vice-versa. It's never simply about the parent-child authority bond; it's also about how the two personalities interact. You know how my mom dealt with me after my dad died? We went to visit one of her best friends in Michigan, because said friend had a personality very similar to mine. (Ironically, I was named after her). She helped us clear up a lot of issues. Parents need to take out time from their extremely busy schedules to spend quality time with their kids, and plopping down in front of the TV together does not count. Something like a restaurant outing, where you can talk, does count. I also think parents need to worry more about violence and less about sex, especially in North America. I like the fact that this is precisely what they do in Europe. Sex is a natural part of life, and so is curiosity. It's not something evil (unless it's rape). I know it's nerve-racking to give the talk, but teens need to know. My advice to parents - allow your kids to visit informational sites about teen sexual health. It takes some of the pressure off. Right from the start, make sure you teach them how to discern right from wrong, and fantasy from reality. That way, when you catch them on a site like this, you can explain why they did something wrong, punish them reasonably, and rest assured in the fact that you raised a good kid. Not a perfect kid, but a good kid, because you know that they won't act on the bad stuff no matter how curious they are, because they're not completely stupid. (At least the majority aren't, I hope) After that, please don't flame us. Don't leave a nasty review. Our e-mail addresses can be viewed on our profiles. E-mail us and let us know that you caught your kid, a minor, on the site reading our work. We'll take note of it and work with you in whichever way we can, short of censoring our work. We don't post here just so minors can read our work. Quite the opposite, in fact. I don't think I'd mind a 16-year-old reading my fics here, but I'd much rather have them reading it on FFN. That's why it's posted there and non-members are allowed to review. (sigh) Why am I ranting here? It's not like I can get across to the parents who need to read this. The parents on this forum actually get it and don't need to be told by me.
  11. No creepy reviews here. For that I am thankful. I've seen other fics with reviews such as "Thanks to this fic, I've managed to seduce my brother and now we're having great sex." or "I really wanna rape my sister" or something equally creepy. Personally, the second type bothers me more because at least it's consensual in the first review. There are some people who make jokes about things that bother them as a coping mechanism. However, I'd expect it to take a while for the mechanism to kick in when it comes to rape. At the fastest, I'd say 2-3 months, but never just a few days. Just go "Uh-huh, sure, that's nice dear.". Don't take it seriously. I wouldn't. Another possibility: this reviewer doesn't get the difference between rape and extreme BDSM. But I doubt that.
  12. That's actually a pleasant update. There are times when I tend to read several fics at the same time, and this would help me keep track. Thanks a lot, Echtrae. I'm also glad to hear that there's three techs now. There's still a lot of work that needs to be done on AFF, and having another person join the technical team should allow things to go significantly faster.
  13. Read the sig. I'm a grammar Nazi. too. However, GAFF is one of the best military training grounds around for this kind of thing. After a few months, you develop a stronger physical resistance to bad English. You don't stop caring, but you can keep the contents of your stomach down, wade into it with a stronger mind, and come out a better soldier. Heil GAFF!
  14. Interesting fact: the producers of the Looney Tunes were aiming to make Tweety an androgynous character. At first, they were thinking of giving him an obviously masculine name (Chester, was it?). They ditched that and went with Tweety because that name doesn't denote a gender. So they wanted us to wonder whether Tweety was a boy or a girl. As for Bugs, apparently Lola was introduced for an extra reason. They tell us that they wanted to add a female to the group in order to lure in more female fans of the Looney Tunes. I say that's BS. One of the stronger underlying reasons was because they wanted to dispel myths about Bugs homosexuality by introducing a female love interest for him. They kept Lola on, but nothing other than platonic has occurred between the two after Space Jam.
  15. Seven Minutes in Heaven It's the only complete fic I have at this point because it's the only one-shot I have at this point. I'm at a point where I'm severely doubting that I have the ability or potential to write erotica or a decent sex scene. As far as I know, this is the closest I've ever come, but I'm still not sure if I can actually do it when I put conscious effort into it. I think it would help to get concrit. Not so much a review about the pairing (Jan/Peter) or the fandom (Brady Bunch), but about my potential/ability at writing erotica/sex scenes.
  16. There's not much I can add here. Like everyone said - be as explicit as you want/need and remember to put the proper labels on. Then again, your trepidation will ensure that (the labels). Right now, I'm finally getting some free time to start working on my fics again. The hard part is writing two different versions of the same chapter. I'm posting my adult fics both here and on FFN. The version I'm writing for this site can be as explicit as I want it to be. In fact, I'm taking advantage of that and trying to write scenes that are more explicit than what I'm used to writing, but trying to keep it somewhat realistic. It's to build my writing skills. On the other hand, I have to censor things for the FFN version. The maximum I can go is a soft R, so I have to watch what I write. The hardest part is making sure that the two versions aren't too different from each other. If a minor reads the FFN version, there's not much I can do. If they read it here, I can give them a verbal lashing. The same goes for whiny parents. Now to get repetitive. You have no responsibility to censor yourself on this site. You have no responsibility to cater to a puerile audience. You do have a responsibility to post a piece of fiction that is well-written to the best of your abilities. Just because others don't try to do that doesn't mean that you shouldn't. If upholding this responsibility includes writing a bunch of graphic sex scenes to add a dimension of vividness to your story, then by all means go ahead. You have my support.
  17. Now that's just plain insulting to 7-year-olds.
  18. I'm the one who started the AFF Orgy thread over at Games, so it's obvious that I know about it. I haven't been participating in it though. Sorry about that. I'm just not sure how to add anything at this point. I'll keep reading though. I'm gonna be sitting in the row behind Knorg on the other side of the aisle, listening to him jerk off while watching you guys. Love RedSliver's new title, BTW. It suits hims.
  19. So that's how you avoid stupid reviews about how your reviewer wants to do something that's done in your fic even though said action is unwise and not recommended. And all this time, I thought the solution was an annoying in-text AN claiming "Do not try this at home."
  20. I think I saw one of her fics on GAFF once. The friendship madsciency one (did I spell that right?). That bio was too confusing for me to ge through. I've read plenty of extremely long bios with ridiculous fantasy profiles, especially on FFN. But this... wow. Maybe I'll try again after my fever subsides, because I'm overly prone to migraines at the moment and I don't want to risk it again.
  21. I've finally visited the Non-English archives after the renovation (took me long enough). I have to say that I'm very pleased at the new format. I realize that the majority write in English, but that's not to say that the people who read and write fics in other languages are so few in number that they deserve to be lumped together in one category. I like the fact that each language is subdivided into the main archives. Unfortunately, the fics are unevenly divided at this point. There's just way too many HP fics at this point. I'm thinking of posting the Spanish version of one of my fics. I'm still working on the French version. My French is weaker than my Spanish, but hopefully I'll improve. I've just managed to gain a volunteer position at my campus which would require me to communicate in French and Spanish as well as English. Apparently I did a good job at the interview, despite the fact that I lack confidence in my own language skills. I know no one's likely to respond to this, but I might as well boost my points with a relevant topic.
  22. What do I think of that AN? I'm a GAFFer. 'Nuff said.

    College

Other than your bank and FAFSA, check for any financial aid available in your home state and the state your daughter is attending college. It's also a good idea to talk with someone in Financial Services at the college. Certain businesses, such as fast food places and clothing stores, also offer scholarships. You can check with them. There are several sites that are good scholarship resources. Scholarships.com 2006 Colleges, College Scholarships, and Financial Aid Page CollegeBoard FinAid:The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid I hope that these sites are useful to you and your daughter. Remember to discuss everything with your daughter and let her take care of the discussions wherever she can (such as the Financial Services office on her campus). It'll go a long way if she's the one attempting to garner financial aid, and is told all the details. College is the best time to assert her independence and take responsibility for adult matters. Obviously, you should be there. My mom helped me out last year (first year of university). This year, however, I took care of matters myself because I have a much better idea of how to handle these things. I hope that helps. Good luck to you and your daughter. I also hope she enjoys her first year of university. I remember my first year being a bit overwhelming, but I enjoyed my courses and made a lot of new friends. I sincerely hope that her experience for the first year is as good as mine.
  24. Seven Minutes in Heaven is a personal favorite. It's a Jan/Peter in the Brady Bunch fandom. I remember writing this roughly a year ago. I had just started my first year of university. I was nervous about doing all of my first papers at once. I was suffering from insomnia. I was still recovering from having all of my wisdom teeth pulled out. I was still bummed out over my dad's death. My blood sugar levels weren't at their best. My old friend the migraine decided to party with me. I was on 5 different medications. I was completely spaced out when I wrote and posted this fic. It was my first fanfic ever. That's one of the reasons it has sentimental value. It's also a favorite because I surprised myself. I had never been able to write smut because I was too self-conscious. This fic may not be very graphic, but it is the hottest thing I have ever written, hands down. Maybe that's the reason so many of the greatest authors were constantly intoxicated. It certainly did wonders for my writing. Come to think of it, some of my best work is done when I'm sick, taking extra medication, and slightly out of it. I tried getting drunk once, but I have an unusually high tolerance considering my height. So yeah. Click the link, read, and review. I like concrit the best. (I usually don't pimp my fics but that's what this thread is for, isn't it?)
  25. Because fat-free makes you fat anyway. Why?
