Special Announcement: Welcome FanFiction.Net Users

Recommended Posts

Thanks for a warm welcome. I'm not in particular against FF.net deleting content with explicit material as much as I am opposed to how they're doing it. The rumour mill has said that there's a group of people on the FF.net forums who have organised themselves into a "Flaming group" who flame or troll an author with stuff they don't like. So as they search through the archives, they report anything with the slightest hint of "Adult material" (So far, I've heard experiences with one or two or two "bitches" in a 100k word story getting deleted.) The site admins then delete the fic without even obtaining any sort of context at all.

That's ridiculous, but regardless, I'm heartened to know that such random deletions will not be present here. Good that this site is present, because I can finally continue writing my own fanfiction with a peace of mind.

Hi there Ward_Point. Welcome to AFF! I think the group you're referring to started last year, with the Red Booton script thingy. As they used a script and that's ALSO against FF.net's ToS, they've had to go back to manually reporting. That at least slows them down somewhat. ;)

Such a shame whats happening with Fanfiction.net, but in the end its probably for the best always considered there seeming stranglehold as not a good thing.

Just a rumor? See that thread they got for stories the members don't like and want them to group flame? May be some substance to that rumor :D

Guest - Our running theory is the whole 50 Shades - It's getting a lot of press and people are finding out that such raunchy (delicious, but raunchy) fiction was originally posted on a website that teenagers can visit. I think they are running scared personally...

That is exactly what I have been figuring since this all started. I totally forgot AFF even existed but I'm sure after this AFF will definitely be a well known replacement.

You forgot us? Eeep! ::pouts and looks forlorn::

But seriously, we are delighted to welcome new authors to AFF, and if we haven't covered it in our FAQs, please feel free to ask! :D

AHAHAHAHAHAH, I remember seeing one of the 'authors' who were affiliated with them - some Spyro kid. Jeez what douche bags, xD This makes me laugh more than anything else. I dunno, I was wanting to leave FFN and FPN for awhile now and I'm glad a lot of people are migrating here.

Now I can post whatever the hell I want without having to worry about offending people if I mention the word 'blowjob' or a graphic violent scene.

My friend just joined as well. I'm so glad I left, I have no regrets. It was starting to get bad there anyways.

The only thing I'm saddened by is now my friend Jaz can't read what she calls the 'bad smut' on Twitter/FB to me now, xD I'll have to get my laughs elsewhere. Lmao.

I still don't think anything is really going to happen. Hmm, but the whole '50 Shades of Grey'. That's a good point! Didn't think of that! Then if that's the case, then yes. Twilight IS ruining it all.

Ah well, we'll see what happens. I've had an account on this site since I turned 18, and I still post on both here and ffn. Just as it did 10 years ago, it'll pass.

What annoys me is that most writers don't realize that, technically, sexually explicit content hasn't been allowed since 2002. They weren't there at that point, so they didn't go through it all. So they're all freaking out.

Gosh...I was on ffn when it happened in 2002...Makes me feel old! (even though I'm really not)

As a newbie to adult fan fiction dot net, first I'd like to say 'hello'. Second, I joined here in response to fanfiction.net's crackdown. I am happy that I did, don't get me wrong, but I must say that I feel betrayed by them. I've been on ff.net for nine years. I have 12 stories up, most of them rated M. But I fear that, with their ever changing definitions of what constitutes M vs MA, or whatever rating, my stories may be at risk. I am afraid to even update them for fear of being too explicit. It's really frustrating! I am grateful to them, but I agree with many of the posters here that point out that other options such as a separate, password or age verification protected portion of the site could have been a better way then just deleting stories without warning (allegedly).

But hey, keeping to the positive, at least this has directed me to adult fan fiction dot net. I feels more comfortable here and I don't have to worry about crossing any invisible lines in the sand. I will try and maintain a presence on both sites in the immediate future. I look foward to reading everyone's stories, hopefully giving useful reviews, and perhaps posting some of my MA stuff here.

Cheers,

Koiame

You know, it's funny...under every other circumstance usually means one can expect violence, sex, blood, death, swearing or drug abuse of some sort to be included in any given "M" rated form of entertainment, yet FF.net has a different standard of what constitutes a mature rating. I'm having an argument with a FF.net advocate over what is widely acceptable in an "M" rating. He doesn't believe sex scenes or graphic violence are a part of that, and belong only to an "MA" category.

If sex acts or violence aren't included in an "M" rating, then what the hell is with all these evening television shows with the soft-core porn and the blood and gore? How do all these crime shows or doctor shows manage to make it on the air during primetime, with all the fucking, fighting and crude language they use?

The problem as I see it is that FF.net (and evidently, some of their supporters) aren't willing to accept that "M" rated entertainment does sometimes have sex, violence and other mature scenarios. Not everything with a sex scene is porn and not everything with a character death or bloody is a snuff story or film. To me, it's like trying to compare a show like Battlestar Galactica (which does has violence and sex, but isn't raunchy about it) with a more raw, sex and violence driven show like True Blood, Game of Thrones or Sparticus.

They're generalizing too much and I think they've either got some immature minds running the show, or they're trying too hard to bubble wrap the site for the sake of complaining parents and they just aren't willing to openly admit they don't want anything higher than a teen rating on their site. They know they'd lose people in droves, if they were more honest about their heavy-handed definition of what constitues material too "explicit" for a mature rating.

You make very good points Xenobia! There is a very big difference between a PG-13 sex scene and a porn. I know there are several times that I've gone to see a PG-13 movie (which is basically what my understanding of their M rating is after they had to scrap the MPAA rating system) and questioned if it was truly something that I would allow a child of mine to see at 13. Then again I also tend to be more conservative than many people nowadays, preferring the times when kids were kids!

As an author, I feel for everyone from FF that is trying to hurry and back up their stories before something happens. I know from when they did it the last time that they use a very broad brush and don't look close, just delete... But, as I know I've said before - Welcome to everyone coming over and please be assured that you won't see anything like this from us happen :)

Oh, it's happening alright...we have quite the number of sigs on petitions, though at this point I fear that it may come to nothing, given that there hasnt been so much as a peep from those that 'mod' or 'admin' the site, was this what happened to you back then?

This is pretty much exactly what happened in 2002, yes. I yanked everything and came to AFF.net just to be safe, but I'll admit I started putting stuff up there again after a while, because I saw that adult material was still present and I wanted to get more feedback to help me improve my writing. These days, the reader feedback is really the only thing that makes FF.net worth uploading to anyhow. I yanked my material again, the moment I heard they were doing another figurative book burning. I doubt I'll ever upload to that site again, even if they do back off this witch hunt and start taking a more logical approach to preventing unsupervised kids from reading things they oughtn't be reading.

My origional plan was always to put my lemon chapters here and just link from the main story, it breaks flow, but I've done more than enough beta tests and the like to know when and how to adhere to the terms and services. However, to just delete things without warning the authors is just wrong. I have a mate in basic training right now that just lost everything due to selling his stuff before going in, and they deleted his profile without notice.

I considered uploading "watered down" versions of my work there and linking back to here for those who want to read the real stories, but I'm running my own site with my original fiction on it and it wasn't worth the effort of going through all that trouble for fanfiction, to me. I think people that choose that route are probably doing the smart thing and saving themselves a lot of frustration, though. It all depends on your personal schedule and what you're willing to do to follow their puritan guidelines, hehe.

I too signed the petition, but I doubt it will make a difference. I'll bet someone's paying them money to keep that place nice and censored.

It's quite possible, though I think they are largely funded from their banner adds.

Understandable, but the lack of communication on the admin's part is troubling, if all the authors leave then there will be no readers, thus no income...one would like to think they would see reason, were just asking for an e-sig or the like not unlike this site has(or hard, it's been a bit since I was out here)
