CL Mustafic Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 I’ve read through the comments and I get what JayDee is saying but I also see the problem you just pointed out Melrick and it’s a valid concern. I know this would probably be a big hassle but could you do a NSFW picture forum and make it so no one can put x-rated pics in threads outside of that forum? So instead have them post them in the picture forum and provide a link to it instead within whatever thread they’re responding to? That way, people browsing regular threads wouldn’t happen upon them but it would stop other people from redirecting offsite to somewhere harmful? Just a suggestion, sorry.

What can happen is people deliberately leave a link to what they describe is a particular legitimate picture when in reality it’s to a very, very nasty site, designed to do nasty things to your computer, or even to a website with highly illegal content. This can, and does, happen elsewhere. All we need is a pissed off person deciding to leave, but not before leaving a parting gift. Another problem is that they could be providing a link to a legitimate website with a legitimate picture, but that website later disappears and is replaced by one of those nasty sites previously described. That’s a problem that’s occurred here at least once. Oh, and I’m assuming this is what people are talking about, linking to pictures that are hosted off-site? I see your point… still it leaves some of us in a tricky position then. Would the code enable for spoiler tags to automatically be applied to images, and would that do the job? Or would our browser (and by extension hard drive & ISP) still clock as if the image had been accessed even if we hadn’t chosen to see it? Sorry if I’m being a bit dense. I’m not sure if that would be a solution or not… it’s just the first thing that sprang to mind. ETA: I’m assuming if that would work, that an exception could be made for the banner ads and profile pics and stuff. Edited November 24, 2017 by pippychick
Desiderius Price Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 Just a moment…. testing the spoiler idea…. Spoiler https://static1.squarespace.com/static/54e8ba93e4b07c3f655b452e/t/56c2a04520c64707756f4267/1493764650017/ pippychick 1
Desiderius Price Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 Based on what I’m seeing in the HTML, my hunch is the browser would load it automatically (it might wait, but it might not). pippychick 1
BronxWench Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 The spoiler tag just hides the image, but it still loads, as far as I know. We have the Art Room thread. Maybe we need to confine all images there, so people can avoid the image-laden posts altogether if they choose? It would be easy enough to moderate that—delete any post containing an image other than an avatar if it’s posted outside the Art Room. If you need to provide illustrations for your challenge or request, do it in PM, or email it. Does that work? WillowDarkling, pippychick, JayDee and 1 other 4
Desiderius Price Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 Exempt the emoticons, of course A text-only link (ie, like the archive) with disclaimers, should be acceptable anywhere since a browser wouldn’t prefetch that and it takes a manual copy-n-paste to follow. Also, we need to be careful with the activity feed, can that filter out images for anybody posting into the art room? (Note, I think the thread topic, in there, should contain something similar to the story codes.)
JayDee Posted November 24, 2017 Author Report Posted November 24, 2017 Yeah, that’s what I was describing. With the exception of the profile pic, pretty much all the hotlinked pictures so far have been offsite that I’ve seen anyway. I see where you’re coming from but if was likely to be a serous problem then what’s to stop them doing that anyway as things stand? Because there’s already links posted for things other than hotlinked pics – eg saying it’s a politics/legal story link in politics, or something on the wall of ads forum or just even “My request was inspired by this event” or similar links? I don’t know if the occason that already happened involved a supposed picture or something else, but certainly the capacity to claim something else is already there. For dead links especially, I don’t know how many previous URLS on the story searches sub forum are still valid – I know an old Harry Potter archive that used to get story links is gone, so there’s probably more dead links there than anywhere else.
Desiderius Price Posted November 24, 2017 Report Posted November 24, 2017 Let ‘em talk with the forum software writers, see if there’s a module that can help us here, there likely is, or a way to make one. I’d like this to be the narrowest rule change possible to get what you need, because, sure, if we ban all images including profile pics, it’d definitely solve the problem, but kinda overkill, especially for those putting up safer G or PG rated pictures.
JayDee Posted November 24, 2017 Author Report Posted November 24, 2017 ...For some reason I didn’t see any posts after Melricks when I posted so was replying to that post. The one time quoting would’ve been useful to me… bah,

WillowDarkling Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 I think that the Art room is restricted to users, so Guests can’t see nor use it. And I think that if we’re going to use the Artist forum for this, then we need to create a specific subforum for Challenges and requests pictures and such. And I also think that it might be better if we move the staff discussion of how to implement this to the Staff chat, instead of doing it out in the open for everyone to see.

As a regular user, I appreciate seeing the debate and the decision process, rather than just an edict/rule-change, because it helps me understand the rule change. (Now I wish we had the power to rewrite the law of the lands so we didn’t have to make the rule change…that’s a different debate.)
BronxWench Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 I can see the Art Room when logged out, and access the folders. I also think it’s not a bad idea to hash this out here. It’s not like we have hordes of other people chiming in. It’s really mostly staff, JD, and Des. But I do tell our members we take their suggestions under consideration, and I sort of like them seeing that in action, if you will. However, this is a forum matter, and I’m archive, so I leave it up to you two to decide how to handle it.
WillowDarkling Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 Oh, the Art Room is open for Guests? I didn’t know that… But then it’s probably the best place for pictures like this. We’d just need to create a new subforum for it, so it doesn’t get mixed up with the original art that people are posting there.
Melrick Posted November 26, 2017 Report Posted November 26, 2017 Okay, I’m closing this topic now since I’ve started another one in private. JayDee 1
