  1. Leonhart29 - I think that a word Deadline is pretty scary to people. However much people aspire to become professional writers, the Daily Grind aspect seems to be ignored. What I got out of this pole so far is:

    1) Most people are comfortable with 2-4 WIPs.

    2) Some people prefer to concentrate on one and make a good job of it.

    3) There are a few multitaskers who are thriving on a large number of WIPs.

    4) Fun of writing and inspiration (Muse) makes it alive.

    5) Deadlines and lack of inspiration are akin to death and not to be spoken of.

I do like your approach to having a deadline, Leonhart29. It makes sense. I'd like to note that as a person who actually has guts to talk deadlines, you might be the one to handle the real one smile.gif

    Hmmm... Pretty interesting.

  2. I feel your pain. I don't work with programming but know all so well what's it like try to make gold out of crap. Other people's crap, mind, not even mine smile.gif

I suspect that if the entire new code was to be implemented, then ALL stories and ALL reviews would have to be recoded and transferred manually. A group of 100 interns could have it done in a couple of months, LOL

To make you feel better, I like AFF the best out of all sites I go to and am a member of. I've made my home at the Original section. So, you guys are moving in a right direction to make this site compelling to people. I do like the crowd around here smile.gif

  3. Let's say, you are drunk at the party and two cute GUMMY BEARs ask if you'll give them head?

What's your plan for surviving the apocalypse?

A good one! Hahaha! I had no idea what question would work here smile.gif

Buns of steel and cotton balls.

  4. if it is feasible to code without wasting system resources.

That made me think in a different direction. Because if this feature is using system resources now then it should be removed, as it's not very useful in it's present form. I'd rather had system resources to be used for extra options on stories.

"Hey, are you rubbing one out to the latest?"

Hey, Knorg, you are reffering to a little fluffy puppy, right? Hahaha!

DarkCabaret - Totally agree on that point. smile.gif

  5. Well, there is a time difference between different countries. Many people IM each other and knowing that they are on checking on the same updates at the same time is pretty convinient.

I sort of wondered if Currently Online was actually showing 100% of people or not. It's never longer than 15 lines, right?

My guess is that Storyline started small, between few people who knew each other. Currently Online would be useful to small groups of people. Now we have hundreds people visiting, so it's a mess. But, if individual friends could be highlited, then the feature would regain it's original purpose.

  6. Hi, DarkAvenger and tech people smile.gif

I have a suggestion for AFF site. On Section Homepage we have a list of people Currently Online. I like that feature and use it to see if some people are on. However, it is 15 lines of small print in random order (I suppose, the list is made 'in order of appearence', so to speak)

Well, it's very hard to see people, there is no way I will read it ALL; the only ones that can be seen are names of people I clicked on previously.

Would it be possible to change random order to alphabetical? Or have an option of Favorite People List, which would make them permanently visible to an individual user?

  7. Anti-boredom recipie from madlodger's Recipie Book:

    1) Put on walking shoes.

    2) Put a bottle of Catorade and a bottle of water in a small backpack with wide shoulder straps.

    3) Get rid of all money but keep your ID.

    4) Have your friend drop you off 10 miles away from where you live.

    5) Walk back home.

On the end of this all boredom will be gone and you'll just feel tired (and skinnier).

  8. Reviewing depends on many things. Time, for one. I have periods when I do review heavily for a few months followed by a couple of months of sparse reviewing. RL seems to take over sometimes.

Overall, I only review stories which I like and would like to see continued. I am able to review ALL good ones during Heavy Reviewing Periods and only super-good ones or none during Review Draughts. That's why my reviews are almost always positive, I ignore crappy stories.

The only time a cuss word made it into my review was when one of my favorite authors got flamed. It was an ugly flame and I posted my answer to the flamer on the same board and quoted a line out of that flame.

Most good or even great fics won't get reviewed on every chapter. I don't have time to do that. Sometimes good fics turn to crap half way through and won't be reviewed anymore either.

The contents of a review are directly based on the chapter’s contents and how it made me feel. Usually it is pretty spontaneous. I do ask questions in reviews and sometimes make requests. A common request would be to insert character descriptions, because many authors just skip them. Personally I like to visualize things, so some descriptions should be in from the beginning, not in the chapter ten, for example.

Many times I've asked authors to double-space paragraphs and/or told them how to insert HTML code. Ones again, I'd only do that for the stories with a good plot.

I do welcome new authors sometimes and congratulate on their first fic. Not all new ones get that greeting either.

Overall I am a fan of Concrit.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about people who blackmail for reviews or use them as currency. There are little clicks that do that and review each other constantly. Well, I would normally ignore that fact and base my reviews on the story itself. However, at the times when I have to choose between a blackmailer and a few equally good authors, the blackmailer will be lowest on the priority list.

    Hope that it made sense

  9. Here is my take on perception (an excerpt from madlodger's Personal Journal):

Let's start from the beginning. Years ago... Here I was, in a little empty room with stainless steel walls and a single Window. Some light filtered in through the glass, but not much could be seen through.

The Window was ignored until boredom set in. At that point the Window was looked at and examined. A sudden thought occurred to me then: "What if I could see through the murkiness? Is there something out there?"

In order to achieve that goal, numerous books were read. Knowledge on Windows and how to see through grew exponentially.

Time went by. I realized that the cool opaque surface was uneven and that unevenness distorted mysterious Outside. "This I can work with!" I decided.

So, a long time was spent polishing Window's surface using various tools, until it became completely flat and smooth. That made a big change. More light filtered in from Outside and some strange moving objects could now be seen. Unfortunately, lack of definition prevented me from examining mysterious objects in great detail. I just knew that they existed.

"Why is it that after all that hard work I still can't see them?" That question bothered me until the realization came: "That glass is crooked on another side as well! And I can't step out to fix it. I don't have a spacesuit."

    How discouraging.

At that point the Stainless Steel Room was not empty anymore, of course. Hundreds of household items and books made it very comfy. Everything was arranged to my satisfaction. Yep, I like my room a lot.

Time went by. What about that Window, though? Well...

I am getting up from my multifunctional leather office chair and walking by my fridge to the Window now. Cleaning off thick layer of dust and looking Outside. No change. Still the same. "OH, SHIT!!!" The huge spider landed right on the middle of the glass with a smack. His angry red eyes bore into mine and the next second he was gone, knocked off by a tiny piece of space debris.

"God damn!" I pulled the curtain over the Window and walked back to my chair, grabbing an icy-cold bottle of New Castle from the fridge (Keeping supply lines short is the key of our success, hehe).

Need to check my e-mails. Let's see... There are three from God. Oh, not another chain letter! What is he thinking? Deleting them. He'd be better off sending me his nude pictures, honestly. The man IS cute. What's next? Here is one from Devil:

In regard of your inquiry about moving objects outside your Window:

There are just other spaceships, much similar to your own one.

And now, here are my nude pictures smile.gif

Yes, this is what I'm talking about! Mmmmm...

    The murky Windows of Perception...
