You should never, and I sincerely repeat never write without first writing an outline of your story—ever! My story, and my protagonists, have had a new band member foisted on them by the plot-bunnies! You’ll see him around Chapter 38 or so. 😉

To me, my process is mixed… sometimes it’s outlines, but other times, it’s going by the seat of your pants (ie, a “pantser”).

Lincoln Way was a “pantser” from Jump Street. Remember that it started out as a “anti-spank-o-wank” one-shot where questions got asked.

For my potter story, it’s not an outline, but a spreadsheet. Initially wrote that ages ago, but it was a godsend when I returned to working on it a decade and a half after starting. Basically, each column’s a person (or group), each row is a day, and I’ve got one/two of the major things that person (or group) is doing in the cell. Not every cell’s full, simply the main points.
