  1. Hate it when I find a good article, useful for my writing, locked behind a paywall.  It’s like… I’m not making money on my writing here.

While I appreciate the vote of confidence, I’m not that great of a writer to get into the formalities of being published.

  2. Happy Winter Solstice Everybody!

Blessings of the Solstice to all, and let the fire burn through this night to welcome the return of the light at dawn.

She’s showing off her true draconic self… properly menacing, don’t you think? :D

      BronxWench

Yes, well, sometimes it’s just exhausting to maintain a human guise.

  4. Should we have a Halloween countdown?  :freak:

      CloverReef

Sure! What do you have in mind?

    2. JayDee

      JayDee

If only you were the Swedish band Europe you could also have a Final Countdown.

  5. Don’t mind me, chuckling where I had Dumbledore refer to anybody under a hundred twenty as a “youngster” in my potter fanfic.

    1. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

      Well you/re spot on.

Wizard/ witches have a lifespan of about two hundred years. Dumbledore had at least 80 years left

      haha.

      Desiderius Price

In my fanfic, I went with an earlier interpretation that put him around a hundred fifty to sixty.  But, by that point, what’s a decade or three?  :)

  6. As of this morning, my potter fanfic has risen on AO3 in word count, now #16 longest in the category.  Got some writing to do!

I take it The more explicit the merrier !

I do have a “cleaner” version ---  974k vs 334k, but one misses most of the really fun stuff.

  7. “I don’t think I’ll ever finish that book on optimism.”

I’ve been meaning to start that one on procrastination for ages.

I never quite got around to getting the degree, which might be possible if I ever get around to enrolling.

  8. Is it bad when I’ve kinda stopped keeping track of my story’s body count?

    1. Wilde_Guess

      Wilde_Guess

If you’re writing fanfiction, I guess it depends on the fictional world you’re writing in.  If you’re writing in Elfen Lied or Game of Thrones, it’s understandable.  If you’re writing in My Little Pony or Sponge Bob Square Pants, not so much.  If you’re writing in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, that’s one hell of a way to not run a railroad!

Fun non-factoid one:  Post TV series, Sponge Bob tried to get a job as a contraceptive sponge.  But, he was too big-headed, and he just didn’t fit in.

Fun non-factoid two:  Thomas the Tank Engine and the original Steely Dan were erected in the same British Locomotive Works in the twilight days of the Second World War.  William Burroughs and William Audrey have spent vast fortunes to cover this up.

Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood would be equally disturbing.

Nah, my Harry Potter fanfic is gaining a body count.  And on this rewrite, I realize I’m adding to that count.

  9. And I get to buy a new boiler this week, yippee!  (Grrr...money...)

    1. CloverReef

      CloverReef

Buying would be so much more fun if everything were free.

    2. GeorgeGlass

      GeorgeGlass

They should at least trick it out for you. A boiler really ought to have a flame job.

  10. Grrr…. when the cats decided that I ought to get up early, and I find myself awake, unable to get back to sleep.  Thus, I’m up earlier than a workday … on a holiday!

  11. November’s over and I’ve missed my goal for the month :(  Still, 40k’s not too bad I suppose.

    1. GeorgeGlass

      GeorgeGlass

40k is pretty damn respectable, IMO.

  12. Got about five months to work on a Halloween story.

Purely coincidental it mirrors the collection on mine :)

  14. :yahoo:  After a short burst of writing, I’ve finished the chapter that’ll let me reach my nano goal.  My story will make 200k words on Friday!  (Still need to wait, proofread, so that’ll be Friday, the last day of the month.  While this will be cutting it close, on time is on time.)

    1. CloverReef

      CloverReef

Way to make that story your bitch!

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

      I’m trying to come up with next month’s goal… somewhere between 250k and 300k (for a 50-100k net)…. decisions, decisions….

  15. I posted a chapter, which means, I’ve met my NaNoWriMo goal, with a little extra, several hundred over 200k.  :yahoo:

Next month….hmmm, I need a goal.  300k would be a bit much, but 250k seems too small, maybe 275k?  Thinking about it.

      Desiderius Price

      I’ve already got 200k in the bank…. so it’s only 3k/day.  Maybe.

  16. The caret is blinking, teasing me into revising.  Must resist.

    1. BronxWench

      BronxWench

Resistance is futile. Revision is inevitable. :P

    2. Darkalley_Muse

      Darkalley_Muse

      Yes, one has no choice but to yield to the terrible splendour of Revision, the dread god of writing. -snicker- Seriously though, I feel you. Learning when to stop tweaking definitely isn’t the same as learning to actually stop. -_-;

  17. Like this FB meme going around.  “There are literally NO rules saying your New Year’s resolutions can’t be for evil.”

    1. InvidiaRed

      InvidiaRed

      The inverse is also true.

World Domination can be used for good :spank:

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Good vs evil can be in the eye of the beholder too.  Ends justify the means sort of thing.  Aside from Halloween fics, I tend to write my originals like this, where both sides believe they’re doing good even though it’s interpreted as evil by the other side..

  18. What sucks is I’m on my second power outage of the day :(

    1. BronxWench

      BronxWench

      Dear gods… I’m sorry!

Luckily, it’s come back (for now), so I made sure to heat up some dinner!

  19. YAY!  I’ve finally met my NANOWRIMO (November’s) GOAL!  Yippee!

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

The game’s been distracting, so haven’t been sinking quite as much time as I’d like into the story, it was otherwise a semi-reasonable goal.  This is also where having a daily morning writing habit helps, because I hadn’t really abandoned that (simply because it’s too unsafe to delve into the game before work), means I’m still plodding along at hundreds if not a 1K per work day.

  20. And my halloween fic has been finished!  Now,  the usual week for it to age properly, and I’ll be posting it next weekend.  :)

    1. BronxWench

      BronxWench

      Awesome! I’m working on mine…

My habit has been a week, finding that to be about the right balance to forget enough so that a proofreading catches most of the cruft.

  21. From those quotes you’ve likely never heard before: “Quite punctual, even showed up three days early to his execution!”

“Typical, she didn’t even show up to her funeral on time.”

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Or, in reference to a crazy driver “late for their funeral”.

  22. Poor Barron, having to watch his family getting evicted today from their home of the last four years.

...I thought they mostly lived in New York and Florida and only went to Washington when taking a break from golf?

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

That was like the only negative I could think of on EVICTION day.

  23. Feeling a bit… old when somebody review comments that they were born eight days before I first published the story.

    1. Wilde_Guess

      Wilde_Guess

It’s harsh.  But, it’s far better than the alternative.

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Yep, with as long as the story was on hiatus, there was a very strong possibility it’d go abandoned too, until I decided to pick it back up a few years ago.  A fast re-read turned into a rewrite, and so it’s now ballooned over that 1.5M word mark.

  24. Another passing of Dumbledore, the second actor Michael Gambon 1940-2023.

    1. Wilde_Guess

      Wilde_Guess

He was a very good actor in many things.  It would have been nice if he’d stuck around healthy for a few more years, but eighty-three isn’t young, even now.  All of us who appreciate a well-acted role will miss him.
