  1. Black’s so overdone as a nefarious color choice.  In my current potter fanfic, it’s now canary yellow!  Really helps distinguish this group from the others.  (The next group in this story will be using bottle green.)

Yeah, sterile white sounds good, especially when the nefarious group thinks/believes they’re doing the right thing.  Even in my case, the canary yellow group thinks they’re doing the right thing too.  As I re-read the material (rewriting), I did notice a lot of black, however, I think the switch to canary yellow is a *WAY* better decision.

For villains, I like to use colors that seem unnatural or out of place. I once wrote a Steven Universe fanfic about a nefarious collective intelligence called the Splinter, which could infect people and control their minds. Infected persons had swirling orange specks in their eyes. I chose orange because it's not a color you ever see in human eyes, or a color that was normally associated with any of the main characters.

I really make my plots complicated.  In my case, it’s not the intention of the canary yellow group to be evil, the canary yellow simply being a close proximity to the Hufflepuff colors around the martyr that’s been chosen, and this group is being tricked/fooled into being evil toward Harry.  Bottle green is by the next group is to (incorrectly) affiliate themselves with Harry, reinforcing the fears at the core of the slander/smear campaign being waged against him.

In prior drafts, I had both groups in black (ie “dark”).  However, this pass through (of what I hope to be the FINAL draft), the canary yellow simply evolved, and I realized it was more effective than the black had been.  I applied the same logic to the next group, and so they’re going to be in robes of bottle green, to match Harry’s eyes.

  2. YAY!  I’ve finally met my NANOWRIMO (November’s) GOAL!  Yippee!

The game’s been distracting, so haven’t been sinking quite as much time as I’d like into the story, it was otherwise a semi-reasonable goal.  This is also where having a daily morning writing habit helps, because I hadn’t really abandoned that (simply because it’s too unsafe to delve into the game before work), means I’m still plodding along at hundreds if not a 1K per work day.

  3. What sucks is I’m on my second power outage of the day :(

Luckily, it’s come back (for now), so I made sure to heat up some dinner!

  4. Wishing Dirty Angel another happy birthday!  (Maybe she’ll bless AFF with a visit?)

  5. Like this FB meme going around.  “There are literally NO rules saying your New Year’s resolutions can’t be for evil.”

      The inverse is also true.

World Domination can be used for good :spank:

Good vs evil can be in the eye of the beholder too.  Ends justify the means sort of thing.  Aside from Halloween fics, I tend to write my originals like this, where both sides believe they’re doing good even though it’s interpreted as evil by the other side..

  6. Happy New Year.  May 2022 fare better than 2021.

  7. New Years Resolution: I'm going to strive to avoid making resolutions/goals, I'll only let myself down.

  8. On the FOURTH day of Christmas, a true love ought to give:

FOUR scammers getting baited and losing their gift cards
    THREE busted spammers’ modems
    TWO broken spammer’s modems1
ONE spammer’s head in a pear tree

Can you tell I’ve gotten peeved at the spammers slithering across our website, littering our forum with their filth?

Don’t know the available settings on this thing.  However, if you can update the captcha requirements to post as a guest, and get all guest-posts put into a moderation pool (for approval) before becoming visible, that might help?  Even though, yes, you’re fast to remove them, it is pubic in visibility for a short period.

  9. On the THIRD day of Christmas a true love ought to give three destroyed spammers’ modems, two broken spammers’ keyboards1, and a spammer’s head in a pear tree.

1Credit to @BronxWench for the second line, maybe a forum topic would’ve been better?

  10. For the first day of Christmas, a true love OUGHT to give a spammer’s head in a pear tree.

One the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me two broken keyboards, and a spammer’s head in a pear tree.

Yeah, I’m going to say it’d be the otherway around. You’d think it would be like wolves descneding on some old dude but then you realize Old Saint Nick has one eye.

Word of advice to any Wall Street private equity firm thinking about this potential buyout? Do not fuck with the All-Father.

  12. 88 Kudos on AO3, does this mean I’m going back in time?

  13. Sure, November’s goal might’ve been a bust, however, I think I’ve overcome the hurdle that stopped my progress.  Therefore, my December’s goal is to advance my potter story from 1066k to 1125k (on-drive count).  Already had 1.1k this morning before work, so off to a decent start.

  14. November’s over and I’ve missed my goal for the month :(  Still, 40k’s not too bad I suppose.

    1. GeorgeGlass

      GeorgeGlass

40k is pretty damn respectable, IMO.

  15. Thanksgiving turkey recap:  It was tasty/delicious, didn’t bother with gravy based on the QA taste test :)

Being single & celebrating by myself, I opted for a turkey breast (which is less than a full bird).  Started this on Monday, when I let the thing soak in a bath of orange juice mixed with sugar, salt, & spices.  Yesterday, fired up the propane meat smoker, used cherry wood chips, let it sit for four hours inside.  (Also had some chicken thighs along for extra meat to enjoy later.)  Only mistake, didn’t fully dump all the OJ bath out, so it was still in the cavity at hour three, dumped that then … so at that exact spot, it was a tad under cooked despite the rest being well-done (I’ll get it with the microwave on leftovers).

All in all, quite pleased with how it turned out.  Quite moist, tender, and bursting in flavor with every bite, hence the decision to skip the hassle over gravy.  Carcass is now in the freezer, I’ll take it out once I’m inthe mood for turkey soup.

Turkey breast would’ve fed a small family’s feast w/o an issue, and way less effort than a full bird :fthrower:

    3. BronxWench

      BronxWench

      But I like the whole bird… :D

Actually, for a family dinner, a turkey breast is fine. It’s just not quite Thanksgiving for me.

    4. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

A whole bird would be nice, gotta admit, but then I’m one mouth, and that’d be a month of leftover turkey...gets old after awhile.  So, considering all angles, made the right choice IMO.  (Of course, having family living closer to go and join, that’d be even better, TBH.)

  16. Death penalty for spammers, anybody got an issue with this?

It’s not just the forums; I’ve been getting a lot of spam “reviews” in the archives, too.

But yeah, the wicker man solution sounds valid. :)

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

Cross my fingers, not an issue in my reviews, yet.  But yeah, tar & feathering’s too good for them.

Not even spammers review my stories, so I’m fine. lol

  17. Make yourself feel better, go back and re-read the reviews you do have for your stories.

  18. Only 74k left to go to meet my November goal!

  20. So, is eating a rabbi considered Kosher?  (Asking for...a friend :) cause ‘tis the season for questions.)

    1. WillowDarkling

      WillowDarkling

Not that I know anything about how that works, but I’d think, if the rabbi’s kept kosher for an x amount of time (how long does it take our bodies to entirely renew all its cells?) then he’d be considered kosher…

    2. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

So, liberally apply the Kosher salt to be on the safe side?

    3. WillowDarkling

      WillowDarkling

Oh, absolutely! Rabbi’s aren’t known for their flavour, after all...

  21. Now that November is almost upon us, setting a (stretch) NANOWRIMO goal, get my potter fanfic to 1.1M, on drive.

  22. Last week, I wrote past a million, this morning, I posted past a million on my potter fanfic!
