Let’s see. I celebrated on Sunday, because my brother in law is a nurse, and had to work Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It actually worked for me, being midway between my Solstice and Christmas.
So, it was family, and neighbors, and lots of food which everyone swore was wonderful, and and small presents for the adults, and more for the kids. It was laughter, and telling old stories, and new stories. It was amazing desserts from my sister’s favorite bakery in Brooklyn. It was glorious, and everything I could hope for in a celebration.
I think this was the first time since my dad’s passing that I really let myself enjoy the holidays.

BronxWench got a reaction from Daye in So, who here got sidelined in the government shutdown? ::raises hand::
Honestly, it’s just that sort of pure blind luck I seem to have. I’d worked for the government before, they were recruiting, they made puppy eyes, and I said okay. I went through all the paperwork, and vetting, and clearances (I’m shockingly clearance-worthy). I was sworn in on October 29, and I’m now having a lovely little unpaid vacation.
In truth, I work because I’m bored otherwise. I’m not dependent on that paycheck, so I’m fine. BUT there are far too many other people who do depend on that paycheck, and this was simply wrong. I feel worse for the people who have to work without pay. My hat is off to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, however. Once again, as she did in the last shutdown, she is donating her salary during the shutdown to a Nevada charity. I admire the gesture.
I’m not going to dip my toes into the actual politics. I’m fairly moderate, and view both the far left and far right with the same sort of wary distaste generally reserved for things best not discussed in the drawing room. I will say that if one does not have a grasp of economics, or even the patience to read a one-page precis, one should not attempt to govern. Governing from the gut tends to fail miserably, which one knows if one reads their history.

Basically there was a funding bill in place to keep everyone working and getting paid over christmas into next year. All approved by the senate and Trump refused to sign it
    Absolutely Trump’s fault basically.

For the government shut down – It’s pretty funny that when Congresss of any political side majority has a government shut down all of the congressfolk’s wages aren’t included and they still get paid.

I woke up to my mom and twitter all talking about the US gov shutting down and everyone was commenting on it but no one was saying wtf actually happened, so I had to get the tea from my friend in Trondheim, Norway. Does this wall building tantrum mean him and Ann Coulter are bffs again? Oh well.
I’m curious though, how does this shutdown affect Americans? Like we’ve had Parliament prorogued in Canada back when Stephen Harper was pulling his tantrums, but I don’t think that’s the same thing.
