I wish I had more reviews, but I'm glad I don't have troll reviews. I write for fun, and I haven't posted most of my stories. Just having one reader who genuinely enjoys my stories is enough for me. It would be nice if I had at least one review for every hundred hits. I like feed back to, which I never seem to get. I would like if people said do more of this less of that. I write for the love of writing though, which I remind myself when I get down on not enough reviews. And AFF is a better community than others I've been in, where you felt like you were intruding on someones private party. At least here feels like an open and inviting forum for everyone. At least in my section it's about the quality of what you write and not a popularity contest.

Why is everyone assuming the only reason the author would choose to delete a review is because it's negative? This isn't a problem I have, but I'm sure some authors have readers who get into a dialogue in the review section. If there is something keeping useful reviews from being easily accessible to readers, it would make sense to delete them. The mods seem to have enough to deal with without adding review deletion to it.

I'm doing the same thing! I decided to rewrite the first story ever wrote when I was a very young teen, and its taking forever! Which is why, this newer, much shorter story seems like it might be alright as it is. It's a weird story that's always been a back up in case I feel like writing something different, so it's slowly grown over...7 or 8 years? lol long time for 24 pages!

I was thinking about posting a story I started writing a very long time ago. So I opened said story, read the first paragraph and realized it doesn't sound like something I'd written. My writing style has changed so much over however many years. True to form, I never actually finished this story on paper, only in my head. So what do I do? It's not so drastic that a reader would notice in a big way, but the transition will likely be noticeable.Do I rewrite the whole thing? Do some touching up? Leave it alone and finish it? Anyone else have this problem?

I was trying to help a friend edit a terrible star wars fan film. It was pretty bad, but the line: "As long as the Jedi are pursed by the Empire..." Made me cry I was laughing so hard. I got a visual of Darth Vader with a purse, going around putting very small Jedi in it.

I've had a lot of pets, and my recommendation is to not get a ferret. For the most part my larger animals have always been afraid of my rodents, until I got a dog who was hell bent on killing my pet rat, which he eventually did. Not only might your cats become obsessed with killing it, but you might get tired of it. I've found having cats and rodents, then dogs cats and rodents, that at a certain point the rodents feel like a burden. When life is insane and busy nd miserable larger pets have a way of making you feel better The ferret, if it is not the only pet, won't rub up against you after a hard day and make you feel loved, it will on the other hand require food, water, cleaning, and perhaps bite you. Stick to the cats and visit the little guys in the pet store. That's my advice.

I listen to pretty much everything but country, so what I listen to for inspiration depends on what I'm writing. Occasionally a song will inspire me and I'll leave it on repeat until I'm done writing. I would suggest you get together with friends to do a music exchange to beef up your library. I do it with my friends every now and again. It definitely keeps my music collection surprising, good or bad lol.

Recently my life fell apart. As lives often do in this economy. Well during this time I did a lot of drinking. One drunken evening I apparently decided to back up everything important from the newer of my 2 computers onto flash drives. My newer computer is now dead, just a few months later. Now that life's getting back on track I thought I would do some writing, only to find the story I was working on had been lost! But wait... I had the feeling it was on a flash drive... thanks drunk me. It was in the wrong file format for my old computer, but that's fixed now. If I did lose something I can rewrite a little. Ever find you've done something mundane and practical while drunk? Also, had you been reading this story, it will be updated soon thanks to alcohol!

I have the same problem! I found the best fix for getting stuck was a co-writer, even if it's a friend who writes a couple pages you have no intentions on keeping, it kick starts things. Another solution, glass of wine, or other drink of choice, to loosen up. It gets you past the over thinking stage. And my last idea, just remove the scene. If your that stuck on it, maybe it's time to edit it out and think up something you're more excited about writing.

I have a feeling there are more people who like, or are indifferent to OC's than there are OC haters. Just like anything else in life, if you like something, and are satisfied with it, you're less likely to review it and talk (or complain) about it than you would be if you didn't like, or were unhappy with it. I don't think it was until I started posting on boards with more authors than readers that I became aware of OCs being an issue. This may be because the other boards I posted on were pretty Star Wars specific, and there are very few female cannon characters.

This is a very well written fuck you to your flamer. It honestly makes me want to write a bunch of abortion fictions just to piss someone off... I'm also the person that hits the big red button that says "do not touch" I won't though, that would require time I don't actually have.

Aside from the main stories (all centered around the OC) and the one AU I wrote the stories with the OC are all pretty brief. where/when the characters are is pretty anonymous. I also tend to use the same cannon characters. I guess that's the problem. I really just need a woman for sex. Does it matter who she is?

I agree with all above. When I get stuck on a word I'll use one that's similar to what I want and play around with a thesaurus until it gives me something or jars my memory. I'd say though, if it's a big deal that the eye patch has been removed, to briefly describe him taking it off. Maybe go into the way cool/hot air feels on the exposed skin. Not knowing how long he's had it on or why it's harder to give specifics.

All good advice, though I'm still not sure what to do. Ironically its because I want to avoid creating a bunch of mary sues that I want to reuse the same character, that and laziness. I completely agree that seeing the same character popping up everywhere can be incredibly annoying, depending on the character. Since it's my character though I don't find her annoying, which I think makes me a poor judge. I'm probably over thinking this. I think I also like OC's a lot more than the average person. I've never gotten what all the hate was about for OC's. Sure some of them suck, but people suck, so it makes sense that characters suck too.

Yeah I use the start menu for most of my programs. The desktop is mostly full of newer programs and files I move to and from my flash drive. I really have no excuse for it being as cluttered as it is right now This thread has inspired me to tidy it up though.

Wow you guys all have such nice clean desktops! Mine is a disaster! I do a lot of work on my computer, so at the moment if I posted it it would give more about me away than I'd like.

Think about book and movie titles, what comes to mind? Long ones, short ones? Random titles, or ones that describe in a few words what's going on? I try to keep mine short and catchy. I also try not to do anything to melodramatic, as I feel it'll turn people off. The best advice I can give is think of a title, then let it cool off before you post it, look at it again, and decide if you like it.

I hope I am posting this in the right forum. I thought as it is not about developing an OC it would be best here. I'm trying to actually finish my current story, which is a long one, and in the interim to combat writer ADD, I've wanted to do some one shots. The problem I'm having is working with characters. I tend to write star wars fics, and there aren't many cannon females I would want to use. Making up a new character just for random sex seems... well odd. But will it come off as annoying if the OC from my main story starts popping up everywhere? Will her sudden increase in sexcapades turn her into a marysue? So good, bad, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think bittersweet is that hard. Think about life, it's not a happy go lucky place. If you look at it as an observer and take a slice of people, you have the characters of a story. For example, my best friend just got married last fall, I went back east for her wedding, which was wonderful, no sooner had I come home than my grandfather passed away. If my best friend had been the main character, it would have been a happy ending for her, and a sad one for me. I just finished reading a book where one character fell in love, and another character's wife got shot. I don't know enough about your particular story to give any specific advice, but for one person's sadness there is always an equal amount of joy in someone else. Another example, a friend of mine is trying to plan her wedding. She got laid off and cannot afford the wedding she wanted, or much of a wedding at all, but she's still in love. Her husband to be has a disease which may take away his ability to walk, but he's gone back to school to get a promising career, and is getting married. That's life, good and bad.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me I will usually do a lot of thinking in my car, and since I commute quite a ways, that gives me a lot of time to think. I never manage to get it all down on paper though Different people are blessed with different strengthens, some can write more than others. For me over thinking is my biggest enemy. I seriously have to give myself a pep talk and remind myself that I can edit what spews from my brain, but I can't work with nothing. I always go with the approach of "brain spew" for writing assignments, but not so much for creative writing. I do recommend it though, as it gets the ideas on paper and gives you a workable draft.

How fast I write depends on my mood. I once wrote nearly 200 pages in a week (while working full time). My writing partner nearly had a heart attack when I sent all that to her... Some nights I'll sit in front of the computer for hours and get half a paragraph I'd say my average is about a page a night, which involves a lot of me going off to do other things. I totally suffer from writing ADD (sorry forgot what you called it) I'll get into one story then suddenly think, "oh I could write that instead!" I'm currently rewriting a story I wrote ten years ago (but quit towards the end) and I'm dead set on actually finishing it this time! Aside from one shots I've never actually written the ending to anything... It's a problem. I think I need therapy. Part of the reason I started posting here was I knew if someone was actually reading the stuff they'd care that it never ended.

I agree with the other posts. It needs to fit the fic. I hate endings where things are suddenly perfect for no reason but to end on a happy note. I think if you want to kill off the main character you need to end with the other characters moving on with their lives. I like bittersweet endings personally, I think they're more true to life. I'd say do what you feel fits your fiction best. If you can't decide write both versions, post them both, and make the last chapter a choose your own adventure.
