WillowDarkling got a reaction from Melrick in My Sweet Ilithil - Review Replies.
WOW, that was a bit of a blast from the past I had gotten a few reviews for this story when it first got put up, but then suddenly today, I got another one, which totally made my day. And made me want to reply.
    * * * * *
So… *squee* Thank you, Melrick, for the wonderful review, and I'm still blushing
I'd like to clarify that the reason for those periods after their names are because for some reason I felt shy (or overprotective) about putting their full names in the story at that point. But this is sort of the first draft of my story, Polinues Marines, the would be mage. (and yes, the name should be Mariness, since that's how it's pronounced.) Ley. stands for Leyjen, and Pol. stands for Polinues. If you want to check that story out, there's ton more detail, ton more smexy goodness, and a shitload more characters but, still, all slash, sorry.
Thank you again for the ego boost, Melrick. I'll be all squeeing for a week now, and I really needed that.

Is referenced in the appendix anyhow, as are a few other users listed by name - foe, willow etc.
I sure hope my random bullshit posts weren't given too much weight in the conclusion
I vaguely recall someone talking about some fanfic research project, but I totally missed seeing this if it was shared before, found it on a random google, and figured I'd link here. Obviously this kind of research is published on the University website because publishing research is the best part of it. Still, if there's a peer review somewhere that said "needs more JayDee" I could dig it

While fan fiction is a great hobby and has been proven training grounds for some authors (Not Twilight or 50 shades) but some darn good fantasy writers, I think if someone is THAT obsessed with a fictional charater that they will spew off a crap ton of profanity and hatred at a total stranger who did nothing to them, perhaps they need to rethink their mental state. That just isn't healthy.

Thank you guys so much. I have had some flamers before, when I first started writing band slash waaaay back in the day, anime people are just way OCD lol.
Potter fans are pretty wild, I have a friend who retired from writing altogether because of the fandom. Broadening horizons is a term these people are not familiar with, and it why I stay out of it. I was never able to get into Potter and my ex burned me out on any comic fandom.
I still write Inuyasha. That fandom is slightly easier to handle. Though it is horribly cliche'd with hot springs mating and mating marks. Write anything remotely nice about Kikyo and you'll get crucified. No lie.
I think I said to someone last night, "So these people are okay with Naruto/Bolt yaoi incest but not OK with some Sasuke/Karin s&m. Seems legit."

I think that's the part of the rabid fandom thing that bothers me the most. When you drive a person away from writing simply because they wrote a pairing that isn't "beloved" of the masses, there's something profoundly wrong with that fanbase. Some people need to step back, look long and hard in a mirror, and think about how they'd feel if they were on the receiving end of the vitriol they spew with such abandon.
Maybe there's a "50 Shades of Cyberbullying" out there handing out misinformation on what constitutes appropriate online behavior in a fandom?

If I was going to read fanfiction, I'd much rather read stuff that I won't come across in the book/series/movie/whatever. After all, what's really the point if you can simply see it in the show/book/etc? I've really never understood that. A bit of variety is always nice.
A relevant quote from the wonderful English author Terry Pratchett: Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one.

Yeah, we enjoy ripping flamers a new cavity, so feel free to report them.
As far as annoying, overly obsessive fans are concerned, I'm not sure if Harry Potter is as bad as it was, because as much as I really enjoyed the books, I found the fandom just a giant pain in the arse, where people demanded that everyone write stories exactly the way they know they should be written, so don't you dare write anything even slightly different! Screw that; screw that right to the wall and hang a picture on it. As much as I can see the appeal of writing fanfiction - all the hard work has been done for you - I much prefer to just stick to original fiction... when I can be bothered. I really don't like having my creativity stifled to such an enormous degree that it inevitably is when you write fanfiction.

I believe I will have to check out your stories! Because, like you, I'm not a true to life fan of the anime. I only watch it here and there and half listen when my brother and hubby talk about it like a soap opera! Also like you, I hated Naruto. And Hinata. JFC; whoever did her English dubbed voice needed to be shot: it was like listening to someone scrape a chalkboard with their nails for nine hours straight! UGH!!
Anyway: it makes me kinda glad I'm into a lesser talked about fandom although I do see it in the DC world as well: if it isn't about Young Justice or Arrow or SuperBat, no one's interested! Like, would it kill people to broaden their horizons...? Me personally, I like the crack pairings. So, I may be one of the rare few that probably won't read a Naruto/Hinata or Naruto/Sakura... or even a Naruto/Sasuke fic. Give me something like... Neji/Eno (although to be fair, I didn't like Eno either because she was just a bully for no reason)!

The Harry Potter fandom isn't much saner, to be very honest. I'd wager most fandoms can be obsessive. When I do write for a fandom, it's for a game fandom. The Dragon Age fandom doesn't seem quite as hysterical about sacred pairings, and I haven't been shot for my Neverwinter Nights 2 sidestep from the "canon" romance.
But, like Melrick, most of what I write is original fiction.

Okay, because I was obviously NOT clear enough in my previous post:
DO NOT POST LINKS TO A STORY THAT THE AUTHOR HAS REMOVED. DO NOT POST LINKS TO A SITE THAT DOES NOT HOST THE STORY WITH THE AUTHOR'S CONSENT AND PERMISSION.
Michally took the story down, does NOT wish it posted, and we will not allow this forum to be used as a conduit for piracy. If you can't abide by our rules, don't post here.

The very first thing I ever wrote was handwritten, because I just love dating myself here. I put it aside until I had time to type it, and never saw it again.

Also, writer voice is not speaking voice. If you try to follow the rules of grammar while writing your dialogue, you're more likely to end up with something that sounds stilted or forced.

One of the things lists like that don't take into account is author voice. For creative writing, as opposed to blogging or writing textbooks/technical manuals, every author has a voice, a personal style. Stephen King abhors adverbs. George RR Martin takes delight in killing off as many characters as possible in as short a span as can be managed. Ray Bradbury strings together words until they become music. But all of those differences are why readers love them. It's their voice.
I think a writer needs to care about good grammar in the narrative portions of a story, while dialogue can be looser. I think worrying about repetitive use of certain phrases is fine, and looking for alternatives to the more common action phrases (he looked, she smiled) is wonderful. But I also think that worrying too much about conforming to a checklist runs the risk of ruining that voice. If you've ever done that little test to see who you write like, it's our quirks that make us sound like one of the "name" authors, not how well we pare out the forbidden words of the moment.

One of the limitations of communication via post is the inability to determine tone and mood. I am not hostile, and in fact, I was making every effort to interpret your post as merely youthful brashness.
To edit a simple misspelling does not require administrator input. In reading what you wrote earlier, it appears that you are confusing the procedure for merging stories that have been rewritten from the ground up, generally after the stories were completed, or if the author has decided to go in another direction. In such cases, we ask that the author post the rewritten version of the story separately, since editing multiple chapters in the Rich Text Editor, especially when there are extensive changes to be made, is difficult at best. At such time as the new version is either fully posted, or has reached the same point as the original story, we merge the statistics and reviews for the stories. This allows the author to retain all the original reviews, ratings, and hit count data as well as the statistics and reviews accrued on the rewritten version. In other words, we are not penalizing the author for rewriting a story.
This is NOT the normal procedure for editing a story, which I do believe is quite clear in the FAQ on the topic. Database access is limited to DemonGoddess alone, to prevent corruption of the data. Given that she works full time and more, beyond the time she volunteers here at AFF, it would be irrational to have every single edit require her approval.
I do not believe that I ever said to you that I know where everything is because I've been here forever. You would be hard pressed to find any of the staff having said that, nor do any of us see ourselves as part of an exclusive clique. I would prefer that you not put words into my mouth, so to speak. I am a blunt old thing, and I will say exactly what I mean. I will point out that your tone in your initial post was not exactly conducive to establishing a cordial atmosphere. Generally, when I offer constructive criticism, I do try to offer a bit of positive input as well as pointing out areas which can be improved. You might want to keep that in mind when you offer your critique of the site.

I do not appreciate you reading in to what I say, something entirely different from what I said. As with Bronx, I'm a blunt old thing. In point of fact, I'm blunt enough that I TEMPER that here, so as to not offend people.
No one, was, in fact, hostile, except perhaps for you.
"Freezing" a site, as you say, to rebuild from the ground up is not practical. By doing that, we have an archive that cannot be added to while this ground up rebuild is done. That is not going to happen. The whole POINT of what we're doing, is to stay live while the changes are made.
If this archive is not to your tastes, find another one.

I would never, ever write or change a chapter just to please others. My story, my rules, and if others don't like that then it's not like there's a shortage of other stories out there for them to read. Ultimately I write stories to please myself first and foremost, and if others like them too then that's just an added bonus.

Honestly? No, I wouldn't change a chapter if I really believed that was the direction the story needed to take. I've upset readers before, and I'm sure I'll do it again. I understand that in fan fiction, their perception of a character may differ greatly from mine, but if I've taken that character to a certain point, I can't back off and wave a magic wand, and make it all better.
I love my readers, and I value their input. Ultimately, however, it's my story to tell, and I have to tell it the way that feels right to me.
