BronxWench got a reaction from pittwitch in Trying to download stories for offline reading
We don’t have a function for downloading stories like some other archives do, largely because we have found it encourages the theft of stories by people who post them elsewhere under their own pen names. We take a fairly dim view of plagiarism here at AFF, and do our best not to facilitate it. We have also encountered instances where an author has taken their work down from the Internet, only to have fans of the stories reposting them without permission.
So, the answer is that we don’t encourage copying stories for offline reading, but we’re well aware that people will copy stories. No archive that I know of has found a way to prevent it entirely. We won’t explain how to do it, though, simply because we respect the rights of our members with respect to their intellectual property, even if that property is fan fiction and not something that would bring them monetary gain.

No worries, not a super urgent matter because people can still read it in full. Just thinking about consistency for readers. Might seem weird to them.

Also I was worried that I’d somehow missed something in terms of formatting. But again, not urgent.

The RTE has been a bit odd lately. We’re aware of the quirks, and hopefully we’ll get those cleared up.

Yeah, that’s what is weird. I used the same document editor for this type of thing. In fact, the final piece actually looks fine despite it being weirder format wise. For some weird reason, it seems to have happened when I copied and pasted it to the web.

I’m not entirely sure what’s causing the initial font changes, but… I know in Word, you have the option to select a format for different sections of a document, like “Heading” or “Title” or “Normal” and those affect how the text appears. You can apparently set different fonts for some format options, I believe. If that’s what happened, you can fix that by selecting just one format for the entire document. I usually go with “No Spacing” myself.
There’s a similar format option in my email interface as well—I use Thunderbird to see all my email addresses in one place. (Don’t ask. It’s complicated.) I can choose between things like “Body Text” or “Paragraph” or “Heading” which then formats my text. It’s useful if I’ve copy-pasted something into the email that doesn’t match the format of the email client.
Other than that, you can try selecting all of your chapter in the Rich Text Editor, and then setting a single font and size for the entire document.

The other night I was working on one of my many, (probably too many), short stories. I decided to move a folder that held the scene I was working on, and then attempted to save the document the scene was in. The document acted strangely and then I realized I had just moved the file itself, I double checked the file and found the thirteen hundred word scene I had just finished, had not been saved. Luckily, I keep scenes, completely separate, while I write, so I only lost one scene. Of course, being the surly, impatient person, I am, I decided to end my writing session for the evening. But this made think, it has to happen to other writers now and then, right?

So tell me, what's the highest word count you've ever lost, when your work wasn't saved?

The highest word count I've ever lost, was one thousand eight hundred words.
I'm sure that's not much for the more prolific among you, but it's a lot for a featherweight like me.

After a rather disturbing moment in archive cleaning, I can most honest say that I will not be telling anyone how to get to Sesame Street.

I write for a very few fandoms myself, based on what interests me, but I do read outside those fandoms. There are just those few that I will not ever seek out when I have time to read for pleasure.
Of course, I also avoid certain tags, but that’s not the question here.

Like it seems most people agree, I don’t go into the real person fic thing. I think I read a couple of them way back when I first started reading fic and it just wasn’t something I was into.

I also generally don’t write or read fanfic based on animated characters. The closest I come to that is live action adaptations of comic book characters, like superheroes or Riverdale, things of that nature. Just not into the idea of animated characters having sex. It’s a line I personally draw.

I’m uncomfortable not only with real-person fanfic but fanfic involving characters played by real people. So I stick with cartoon fandoms. And mostly Western ones, because I’m not a big enough anime fan to have seen a lot of the ones people tend to write about.
The only non-cartoon fanfic I’ve ever written was about Adam and Eve, because that’s not a particularly recent fandom.

Oh yes, real person fiction is a line I cannot cross either!

I’ve gotten unsolicited requests that try to push me into writing for fandoms that I know nothing about.  Guess that’s my hard stop for writing, along with the desire to finish what I’ve already started.  And TBH, if I had fallen into the potter universe today, it’s unlikely that I’d even delve into fanfiction.

Knowing this website, the question will morph with the conversation, and the answer will always remain the same (42).

    Good question!
I’m not a fan of anime in general, but I have to say, I avoid Naruto like the plague itself. I’m also deeply and profoundly disturbed by real person fiction as a whole, and I will never read it for enjoyment, much less write it.

Reminds me of an ancient joke I heard when I was a mere lad.
A young woman comes into an embroidery shop and asks the proprietor if they can do custom work on something delicate.  Asked what she means, she pulls a pair of nylons* out and says, “Up here at the top where it’s reinforced for the garter.”
Examining it, the owner says, “It’s kind of touchy but I think we could manage it.  What do you want it to say?”
“Something I saw on the back of a truck, ‘If you can read this you’re too close.’”
“Okay, would you like that in Roman or perhaps script lettering?”
    “Braille.”
    *I said it was ancient.
