  1. “The Play That Goes Wrong” is utterly brilliant. I quite literally laughed until I cried. It was the perfect birthday present from my daft bugger, and I adore him forever!

Ohhh! On the off chance something from Broadway might make it’s way across the ocean and turn up in Sheffield, I checked, and it will be with me for my birthday in 2018!!! I’m going to have to see it, lol. Then we’ll compare tears of laughter ;)

  2. It is 33 F out there, with wind chills making it feel like it’s in the 20s. That’s 0, with wind chills of -5 C…

      It’s a heatwave today! 43 F/ 6 C! I might not wear gloves! :happykitten:

  3. So, Columbia lost to Harvard today, but is still ahead in the overall standings. I confess to being disappointed Columbia lost, but any chance to mock Harvard is always worth the price of admission. ;)

  4. I went to a funeral service today for a young man who died unexpectedly. He was one of the truly good souls. I was honored to know him, and the world is a sadder place without him. May his god hold him close, until we all meet again.

  5. So, whilst at the lake, my laptop decided its hard drive was gone. Not that it was much of a laptop to begin with, but a braindead laptop is nothing more than a paperweight. Time to buy a nice new hard drive, and grumble a bit about annoyingly inconvenient technology...

On HDDs, I have more issues earlier with Seagate too, though WDs have failed on me.  Most of my SDDs are Samsung, good luck so far.

    3. Melrick

      Melrick

I went for 20 years without a single HDD failure.  20 years.  I get SSDs and 3 failures in less than a year, all different brands, all top brands.  At least they were only used as starter drives so none of the important info was lost, which was just as well, because when SSDs fail, you rarely recover any data from them.  Still a pain in the arse though.  SSDs will get better and more reliable in time, but at the moment they’re far from ‘bullet proof’ or ‘fail safe’ like sales people keep trying to tell us.

I lose at least 2 HDD a decade and one took a good chunk of writing when I was doing parody more. I’d been thinking SSDs were better, but I never had anyone who could save files for me. I lost a 40k chunk as I didn’t know much on how to. I still miss that angsty story, but recreating it just did not flow. Guess I’ll stay with my HDD/cloud backup. Ineed to figure how to save my email boxes and custom dictionary.

  6. My bloody Internet is acting up, and service can’t come until Wednesday, so if I go missing, that would be why.

Only if you are putting in an IV and they have rolling veins. I think some medical personnel get a kick out of pain inflicted.

… besides that it would ruin a perfectly good pen you’ll need to autograph your books someday. You need something far more creative, think Edmund Dante!

sure, I think some med personnel do.  I mean, Kinda like my last blood test.  Can’t find a vein?  Well, lets jab you in the back of the hand!  (Never mind, I need to type for my profession).

And we have her home. The neurologist told us we could do just as much for her at home, since she wasn’t on the IV meds at hospital, so we went and broke her out. She’s not quite herself, and she’s still having small focal seizures, but she’s glad to be home, and we’re so glad to have her back with us.

God, I just loved that scene. The way Sansa and Arya played it. And Bran being all creepy in the corner. But especially Sansa and Arya. Will need to watch on demand just for that scene.

Though I do think they made one tiny goof. The shot of the Night King after the wall comes down should have come after the army marched through, not before. Would have made a good end to the season.

    3. pittwitch

      pittwitch

I can’t believe we have to wait 2 years for the next season …  Bran finally got interesting but dammit man, take control of that dragon and ice the Night King already.

    4. pippychick

      pippychick

Agree with all… but a political angle occurred to me. With Tyrion as Daenerys’ Hand, and Jaime having marched off to take his men north to fight the army of the dead. The “Lannisters” are actually with Daenerys. Cersei is now isolated in King’s Landing, and has lost the authority conferred by ‘family’ in facts on the ground as they stand.

Also, there’s this “I can’t have children” thing that is going to turn out to be a load of rubbish. Because any author who’s gone to all the trouble of having the recurring motif of incest > insanity, and of setting up Snow and Daenerys in such a fashion, fully intends to have that play out all over again (if nothing changes).

  10. So, NineStar Press has offered me a contract to republish Ghost’s Sight… :happykitten:

Oh, you must! While the series does diverge from the books, the weddings alone are worth the dvd set. :D

      JayDee

Yeah, my friends who’ve seen/read both say that they're both great for differing reasons and the series is good in its own right. I’ll just box set and binge. And keep grumbling ‘til Winds of Winter comes out.

  13. And I’m home. I had never realized before how essential I am, since it is apparently impossible for the household to function unless I am there to be the chauffeur, cook, laundry person, and all-around dogsbody. I’m going to fire my family, although the corgi can stay.

The older I get, the more I see that my family members are human and flawed. They kinda suck actually :P I know exactly what you mean… We live 10 minutes from my grandma and she’s been really sick. She’s in the same situation as me with my grandpa. He sits in his chair all day watching TV while Grandma runs around taking care of of their big house and their hyper dog. So she’s in and out of the hospital now and I’ve been going over to take care of her place. I’m doing shopping for 2 households, cleaning for 2, taking care of my 4 cats and grandma’s dog 3 times a day. I’m not working… So i thought I’d start trying to concentrate on writing… Thank god for google docs on my phone, that’s the only way I’m able to write constantly inbetween the hospital and grandma’s house and my apartment. I’m not sure what your business entails, but when family doesn’t support your ambitions, it’s doubly discouraging. and Oh god… When they guilt you to do things, it’s super annoying! Kudos on you for having mom move in with you. Jesus, I’m so glad to escape Grandpa at the end of the day. He barks orders at me and when I try to respond, I realize he’s not even wearing his hearing aid. I have to scream at him just to get him to understand what I’m trying to say... :P I’m sorry I rambled on your status. I’m going away now!!!

Clover, I love you and words!

A dogsbody is a British term for someone who does menial tasks, the sort of drudgery that you’d ask a junior intern to do.

And most days, my mother starts with a litany of all the things I must do for her, completely disregarding the fact that I have a husband, two kids, a dog, and a business, all in addition to my trying to actually make a name as a writer. It’s been nearly 21 years of this now, and I think I might have reached my limit with her this time. If she can’t handle things on her own, I’ll arrange for an aide to look after her next time I need to travel. I have neither the time nor the temperament to be what she wants me to be.

    4. CloverReef

      CloverReef

Oh! See, I was thinking it had something to do with the corgi! I have a pug attached to my ankles 24/7, and right now, quite literally attached to my leg. Dogsbody seems like an appropriate word for that.

But damn, tending to all that while trying to carve your way through the professional author world sounds so overwhelming. And for so many years! It’s amazing, and I’m in awe, but I hope you get a reprieve or two or twenty.

  14. I’m supposed to leave for Boston tomorrow on business, so of course the corgi had a seizure, and my mother is having gastrointestinal issues and my son is celebrating his 19th birthday with a flu. :bash:

JD, I’m beginning to think it comes in a baker’s dozen around here. I don’t make lemonade; I make lemon tarts.

Mom’s advanced to antibiotics, the corgi is about to go on her rescue meds because she had another seizure in the wee hours, and I’m not on speaking terms with the daft one at the moment (which will make getting some actual sleep in the car on the way to Boston easier). So, everything’s pretty much fine, and business as usual. ><

  16. Ten to twenty inches of snow? Really? It’s a week until spring, for feck’s sake...

We squeaked past the blizzard warning for the city proper, but where I am, it stayed snow a bit longer. We have about 8 inches of heavy wet stuff, and it’s still sleeting lightly. We expect more snow overnight and into tomorrow morning, so we may hit a foot.

  17. It’s snowing. Why is it snowing? Did no one bother to note that spring is a mere ten days away? To whom do I complain, please?

On the bright side, my computer has finally decided to update to the latest version of Windows 10, after I manually updated Windows Update.

Not going to start a fad?  Wearing the cocktail dress and snow boots?  Might be the next greatest thing to start around…  Then all the Hollywood elite will start wearing them to the red carpets and you’ll have started a whole new…  No?  Not likely?  Okay.

Yeah.  I’ve had some minor issues on mine, but overall, I don’t mind it.  Granted, I’ve come to the conclusion I know more about my laptop than the…  techs that actually work at the repair shops around here…  So, either I know it or I ask someone who does…  lol.

Every OS has its virtues, some things can be easier in one or the other.  Privacy/security being different between the two.  Once I know how I’ll pay for it, I’m thinking about creating another desktop, so I’d have separate dedicated windows and a linux machines.

In answer to your question: because the weather system is fucked.  And computers are often wonderful, sometimes bitterly frustrating chunks of metal and plastic.

  18. I do not like winter storms, at all. I most certainly didn’t ask for 8 to 12 inches of snow, with strong winds and gusts up to forty miles an hour.

For our metric users, which is most of the world, this is 20 to 30 cm of snow, and wind gusts of 64 kph.

  19. So.

My almost 81 year old mother is wobbly and not feeling top form because she has a sinus infection, but doesn’t want to take the nice antibiotics which will clear up said infection.

My YoungerSpawn is acting out at school and being generally a difficult young male creature, complicated by autism. We may, for the first time, require behavioral therapy.

My corgi was back in hospital with cluster seizures, and now has a second medication which makes her sleepy. We’re hoping she’ll adjust to the new med and come back to her sunny self, but the current flattening of her lively nature is heartbreaking.

I need it to be April 15, so I can open the lake house and go hide there for a solid week. Alone. With wine and coffee.

You are more of an expert than I will ever be. Only you can tell how serious it is. That’s not in doubt.

But, having said that, with all the other stresses this week, it’s hardly surprising you feel down.

And, also, those things will be adding to his stress, making it difficult to keep an even keel.

If he does need some therapy, is that such a bad thing? It is there to help, and it might just be the thing that helps him over this little bump in the road. I’ve actually heard some good things about DBT, and he might find some tools in that to help him in future.

    3. BronxWench

      BronxWench

Oh, I’m sure it will be fine, and he’ll do well with the therapy. I’m just feeling the stress of too much going on at once, and very little assistance from the rest of the alleged adults around here, all of whom need me for various things.

    4. WillowDarkling
  20. Apparently, the Trumpian effect has struck. My son’s bus has managed to pick him up on time these week once. ONCE. I have set a record for the number of complaints filed in a single day, and I’m now going to drive the poor kid to school, because the driver is out and there isn’t anyone who can drive the bus.

The ill-prepared nature of this bus company is breathtaking. Equipment breaks down? No problem. Wait for another bus to finish its route, and send that out. “These kids” aren’t really learning anything, so they can miss the morning at school. No driver? Same deal, wait for someone else to finish a route, and that’s good enough.

    1. pippychick

      pippychick

*sighs* They’ve been useless for a while now. I don’t know what else to suggest except to keep complaining. Is it the school’s responsibility? Surely they must be thinking of getting some other bus company to fulfil the role by now…

I did most of the cooking last night. The lasagne is prepared and only needs baking (2 pans of it), and the filling for the steak, mushroom, and onion pie is done. All I need to do is prepare the pie crusts, fill, and bake. I have Italian bread, salad, and lots of nibbly things, as well as a case of wine, hard cider, Guinness, beer, and Campari. The place is mostly tidy, and I’m ready! :D

While we’re all trying to get our rights reverted back to us, our books are still listed for sale on Amazon, Torquere, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Google Play Books, and All Romance, to name a few. Check before you buy: if the publisher is Torquere, please don’t buy. We won’t get paid.
