Sex Scenes Too Long?

Every time I write a major sex scene, it's like 20 pages long...I'm beginning to wonder if I'm over describing...is that possible?

My first thought upon seeing the title of this thread:

"Light speed too slow?!"

Two pages, twenty pages, whatever floats the boat, right?

I agree with Big Samurai. No, not really. Everybody has different tastes. happy.gif I personally enjoy a long, drawn out sex scene. But my own sex scenes I write are cliffhangers. I like keeping my readers on the edge their seats until the next chapter.

Whatever the situation calls for, long or short. I personally prefer long (I just hate the number of "single page" one shot lemons on AFF that are over before I'm even vaguely excited ohmy.gif )

As a writer I think you naturally develop a feel for how long you feel a given scene should be.

If it's twenty pages of wonderful, bliss-inducing erotica, that's great. Do whatever you're most comfortable with. Although if it's bothering you, don't be a afraid to edit a little bit. laugh.gif

I don't have really long lemons but they can be quite time-consumeing. Most of my focus is foreplay though. I tend to breeze through intercourse, just because I find it so hard to keep my focus on all that thrusting.

Yea, same here. XD

I like to put all the emphasis and all the delicious descriptions in the foreplay.

I love a good bed wetting, head board pounding, wake up the neighbors without leaving your keyboard foreplay scene. X3

The in and out gets kinda repetetive unless you change positions constantly. And that in writing can make things far too confusing. O_o;;

The danger of writing one single sex scene lasting 20 pages is that you really need to write it very well indeed, otherwise it could become repetative and, dare I say, boring. My own personal tastes are usually to write stories WITH sex scenes in them, rather than sex scenes with a little bit of story. But if you get positive reviews for your stories then that should be a good indication of whether people like it or not. Overall, though, you always need to write stories to please yourself first, and if they also please others then that's a bonus.

I have a problem with writing more than 7 or 8 pages, and that was an Orgy. There just seems to be limited ways one can describe the act, but I keep coming up with new ways none the less.

Charging Handles Forward did this really long lemon and I swear, he had to have stopped to beat off every paragraph, because as a reader, I had to pause several times myself (it was an Inuyasha fanfic) It was beyond lemon. If you can do that, hats off to you. (please ignore the bitch that was barking earlier.) (random insanity)

I try and keep mine for about three pages or so but after that I get a bit bored of writing them.

20 PAGES? Wow, um, your keyboard and computer must have been sizzling after that!

If it's a PWOP (Porn With Out Plot! as I like to call them) then I guess 20 pages isn't too long as that is basically the story.

If it's a PWP (Plot with Porn! I know I'm contrary aren't I? rolleyes.gif ) then it might get a bit boring after a while and you could lose the heat.

So, yeah, that's my take on it.

I think there's a thin line between going on too long and doing to much.

I think a good sex scene builds up sexual tension mostly on good foreplay, and then when it gets to the intercourse you only need a paragraph or so to finish up well.

I'm not entirely sure there is a line sir/ma'am. They sound like different ways of saying the same thing to Me.

Being descriptive, and doing too much has a nice little line. However fine it may be.

Sometimes it is...for me at least. But really it just depends on the quality. If your telling about the surroundings, (ie: The light in the room, the clothes they're wearing, what time of day it is, the exact area they are in the room) then yeah. But if most of it is about what they're doing, then no.

But that's just my opinion.

Oh yeah, that's true enough. If there's two or three paragraphs forcusing on every scrap of clothing being taken off then that can get a bit tedious.

Although it should also be noted that if there's too much of what's being done to who, that can be a bit annoying as well. I mean...I guess it all depends on the writing style really, but I still wonder if describing every little swipe of a tongue along the head of a dick might not be just a little excessive.

If its well written it shouldnt matter...

Ive read sex scenes that were half a page that were really good and Ive read ones that went on for 5 or so pages that were good.

Personaly most of mine never reach 5 pages- I run out of things to say without sounding redundant and boring LOL I HAVE written longer ones but that was with a lot of dialouge and what the characters were thinking in their minds.

So relaly it depends on the story.

It would be a turn off to me to read a 10 page sex scene in the first 1 or 2 chapters of the story- Im bad about fics that rush to the sex too fast. If you are going to have an actual plot and story line at least try to make it believable.

The way I write sex scenes is like riding a roller coaster. First, there's the build-up; flirting, touching, smiling, etc. Then there's kissing and the embrace. After that it gets into the beginning of foreplay and their thoughts considering the other person involved. Then comes the actual sex. It starts slow then goes faster and faster until you reach the peak and begin the exciting journey all the way back down. Then there's the after glow.

You can fit all of that in the space of a paragraph or make it the entire story. It depends on the characters you are putting together, what their sexual styles are and how deep their feelings go.

Longest sex scene I've ever written? 87 pages, but it involved a lot of kinky stuff, not just straight up vanilla sex. Still, I think only one person complained, but I got multiple reviews (like 8 or 10) saying that it was the hottest thing they've ever read, so I don't think that the length, or being overly descriptive is a turn off.

I guess you must be referring to your Solstice story? Since when I looked at your author page, the majority of your stories/poems have zero reviews. But what's curious is that your Solstice story has three chapters. And when I looked at the reviews - here's what I found:

12 were made by Tenpenny - either this penname is spamming/filling up your reviews, or can't remember that they've reviewed it already?

2 were made by Anon.

1 was made by Incarous_complex - and wasn't a review, it was a threat to report you for something or another..

The rest were made by yourself, replying to Tenpenny.

So, ok, TWO readers thought your story was good. So don't go making it sound like it was so INCREDIBLE that tons of people loved it. Makes you look foolish when someone bothers to go look at the story/reviews for themselves. And frankly, I scanned through the first chapter. But when I hit references/descrips of Molestation - I quit reading. Frankly, it turned me totally off. And if I don't care to finish a chapter - I don't leave a review. Which is actually very rare for me. (most current stories in my preferred fandom HAVE at least one review from me)

Actually, I WASN'T referring to Solstice, at all, if you had been paying attention to my post at all. I mentioned a story that had a sex scene with 87 pages, most of it kink. What exactly was in Solstice that had kinky sex scenes? None. Instead of bashing me, could you at least pay attention to what I had actually said, and not make assumptions? I do have other stories, and not all of them are archived here. It makes you look foolish by referencing something that doesn't even track with what I said. Oh, and Tenpenny wrote a review after everytime I posted, not exactly troll behavior. I know a lot of people don't like my originals, I barely reference them anymore and Solstice was hardly sexually driven. Considering my gundam wing fanfiction, my originals are actually very tame.

Ok, correct me - but she wrote 12 reviews for a story consisting of three chapters. That doesn't exactly add up you know. Or was Incarus_complex right in their criticism?

My bad, it was Sklylar Schaeffer that threatened to report...

Early onset Alzheimers...LOL .. or maybe just female forgetedness..
