DemonGoddess reacted to BronxWench in Commentary that can ruin a story - a reader's plea
I view author's notes with a jaundiced eye. I want to read a story that will hopefully pull me in and hold my attention. Author's notes are jarring and drop me back into reality with a resounding thud. It's unpleasant and mostly unwarranted, because if you need to explain to your readers what you're doing in a chapter, either you are not writing clearly or your readers are potted plants.

There's an almost way - using google's site command with specific domains, then the quotation marks around the code, eg for a bi search in harry potter:
    site:hp.adult-fanfiction.org "bi"
You'll get some reviews, a few dupe returns etc, and there's probably stuff that doesn't come up, but it can be pretty useful in the meantime.

    SFW rating
This rating means "Safe For Work", meaning no sex or anything explicit. If you wouldn't want your boss - or grandmother - reading it then do not using this rating.
    Adult rating

Simple drabbles, songfics, and poetry usually belongs here. Stories that are rated "Adult" can also include things such as strongly suggestive imagery or situations, heavy groping, insinuations of sexual activity, adult language, and violence -- the key is that stories rated this way are generally nonexplicit in their descriptions.

    Adult+ rating

Most AdultFanFiction.net Stories fall into this category -- these are Stories that are clearly for mature audiences only. Stories that might be given the "Adult+" rating include things such as explicit sexual activity, unapologetic violence, descriptive fight scenes which allow for all due blood and gore, and a limitless adult vocabulary.

    Adult++ rating

No holds barred here, really -- this rating should be applied to all Stories that are not for the faint of heart. "Adult++" is how we suggest you rate a Story that involves heavy or off-the-wall kinks, the darkest of plotlines, intense psychological mind games, excessively gory or disturbing depictions of torture or death, unusually graphic descriptions of sex, gratuitously crude language, or the addressing of acutely controversial subjects.

DemonGoddess got a reaction from The-Bat-Lady in What is needed in a Disclaimer?
There are consequences to having a non disclaimed or improperly disclaimed story.
When an improperly disclaimed fiction is found, the Admin will post a REVIEW stating the disclaimer is in violation, and what needs to be corrected.
The user will have one week from the Review date to properly disclaim their work. After one week, if the fiction is still in violation, it will be HIDDEN.
After a story is hidden, the user will have 30 days from the date the story is hidden, to properly disclaim the work and contact the Admin, requesting the fiction be returned to public view. If after 30 days, the fiction is still in violation, or the user has not contacted the Admin, it will be DELETED.
Finally, yes, WE ALL DO realize that fanfiction by its NATURE is not for profit. However, if it's not stated, it's still not a proper disclaimer. So, whether some of you think it's obvious or not, it still MUST be stated. A blanket disclaimer in the user profile is not acceptable, it HAS to be attached to the story.
  7. Thanks
DemonGoddess got a reaction from Anesor in What is needed in a Disclaimer?
    Why-
Disclaimers are needed to not only protect the archive itself, but the user, individually. By disclaiming stories, the archive is protected to the point of worst case scenario being deletion of content, and the user is protected whereby the archive is better able to protect the user's information on file, particularly the emails.

    What is needed-
    For fanfiction-
Say that you do not own the fandom, by NAME of that fandom. Character disclaimers are not enough. Say you make no money on the fiction.
    Example

    Crossover fanfiction-
ALL fandoms in the story must be disclaimed. If the user knows they're going to exceed the 240 character limit in the disclaimer field, then put in that field “see full disclaimer below”, and do the FULL disclaimer as required. It only needs to appear in the first chapter, if disclaiming in this manner.

    Celebrity/Real person fiction-
The author must state they do not know the person (or group), they must state that it is fiction, and they must state that there is no money/profit made.
    Example

    Original fiction-
The author must state it's a work of fiction, and include a resemblance clause.

    Original poetry-
The author must state it's a work of poetry, and include a resemblance clause.

    Original non fiction-
The author must state that it's a work of non fiction. They then must state that where possible, permission has been granted by the person (or people) involved in the story.

Fiction based on Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales-
The original fiction disclaimer should be used for these stories.
    Example for the above

Fiction based on books which are now public domain-
The author needs to acknowledge the fandom in some fashion (whether inspired by or whatever), and add a resemblance clause, like what is required for original fiction.

    Blanket disclaimers in profile
We don't accept them, as there are entirely too many categories throughout the archive, for it to be effective. You MUST attach a disclaimer to each and every story you add.

I have included links to examples, so that you know exactly what we're looking for. The reason for the brevity, is the fact there are ONLY 240 characters available in the disclaimer field, and spaces do count as characters within the field.

Verbose disclaimers within a chapter do NOT count as an author note, as that is not what they are. If you need to make a disclaimer which is more than 240 characters, in the disclaimer field, simply input -See full disclaimer below (oneshots) or See full disclaimer chapter 1 (multichapter). This TELLS us where to look.

There seems to be a misunderstanding among many of you. Thinking that ONLY adult content is wanted here. That is not the case at all. Fiction of all "ratings", with or without adult content are welcome here.
While the archive certainly has a great deal of adult content, the ADULT in the site name is geared towards the fact that users are to be 18 or older, and that this is a group of ADULTS who come here to write, interact with each other, and etc.
A suggestion for you authors, should your stories be "fluffy", contain no NC-17 type stuff, or whatever, you should make a note of it, so the readers who are looking at your summaries understand that. With the current reworking of the archive, I will suggest that some additional tags be added for this kind of story.
Finally, if you, the author, are FLAMED because someone thinks you must have adult content, because you are on this site, please DO report it.

As this story is now published, by E.L. James, under the title 50 Shades of Grey; and this was/is her old fanfiction pen name, you'll need to prove that you are, in fact, her. We cannot allow a user to pose as another, whether or not the old pen name is being used by that author anymore.

As stated many, many times before JennMarie was deleted for being underage at time of sign up. Not once, but multiple times. She was well aware of the requirement for being 18 or older to join and use the archive. This is NOT a new policy, the age requirement. It's been in place since the site started in 2002. That she consistently flouted that rule is, quite frankly, her issue. That I deleted her content and profile is not an issue, but simply something that HAS to be done with underage users as they're found. Perhaps you've not read the prior posts, but you know, these children who do this don't give a rat's ass about the consequences that their presence can have on the real people behind the site. Which is EXACTLY why we're so aggressive about finding and deleting them and their content. To PROTECT the real people behind the site.
As to dextrousleftie, read this topic. As Apollo pointed out in her answer, there was a valid reason behind the deletion.
We don't play favorites, as I'm sure you can see. There is a Terms of Service in place for a reason. Users who sign up agree to ABIDE by the ToS and Content Guidelines. If someone has continuing difficulties with following that, then yes, eventually they can and will be removed. It is patently unfair to the bulk of the users who do their damnedest to follow and do what they agreed to at sign up, for us to not deal with those who choose not to, repeatedly.

DemonGoddess got a reaction from dena.gray in Requesting A Beta Reader
    Just a few things...

Give a brief description of what you're looking for from your prospective beta.
Say what fandom this is for, or if it's an original story.
Let the prospective beta readers know what type of story this will be (in general). For example, if it's an erotic story then you really should point out what they can expect to find, so if it contains slash or rape, for example, and the prospective beta isn't into either of those things, they'll know not to bother enquiring. On the other hand, if it's right up their alley then they'll be more likely to enquire with you further. The prospective beta reader needs to know if what you're writing is something that will interest them.
State whether you'd like to read examples of the prospective beta reader's works before you agree on anything. This is a good idea, since if a person is going to be critiquing your work, wouldn't you like to know whether they really do know what they're talking about?

Very simple, and up to you guys to flesh out from that.

Put what fandom you'd like to beta for
Be sure to state what you will NOT beta, as to story type and pairings
When making your post, show good language usage, so the authors looking for betas have some idea as to your capabilities.
Finally, tell us a little about yourself, if you like.

Those are the basics of what you should post. The rest is up to you.
To expand on the above a little, something else that would be a good idea is to provide a link to a profile where your stories are located, giving people a chance to read your stories to see if your writing style is appropriate for them. Some writing styles just clash too much, and would likely cause arguments over what's "right" and what's "wrong". If you don't have any stories uploaded anywhere but you have them on your hard drive then tell people that you'd be happy to send them some stories of yours for them to go over. If you don't have any stories anywhere, then... why are you offering to become a beta when you have no practical experience? Would you offer to teach someone how to fly a real plane simply because you've read a lot about them? I should certainly hope not! Being an avid reader is no substitute to being a writer. If you're offering your services as a beta then you really should be able to prove that you know what you're talking about.
Finally, if you later change your mind about being a beta reader, or you feel you have enough on your plate without taking on any more, then it would be a good idea to come back here and update things to show that you're not taking on any more work. That way you save everyone's time!

DemonGoddess reacted to Shadowknight12 in Is this a racist question?
That study is highly questionable, mainly because it suffers from clear gender bias. A proper study would have had cross-references with different genders and sexualities (female tears on straight women, straight/bi men, gay/bi women and gay men; male tears on straight/bi women, straight men, gay women and gay/bi men). The study as is presents more questions than it actually answers. What is the alleged pheromone or chemical those tears have? Nobody thought to run a simple HPLC on the tears? If they had enough to significantly wet a piece of paper (several, in fact), it's ridiculous that you couldn't spare a few microlitres for HPLC, spectrophotometry, spectrometry, gaseous chromatography or anything that actually lets you figure out what chemical is causing what effect (and in the event that tears contain several unknown components, then you repeat the test with a pure sample of each unknown chemical and see which one gives you the same reactions on the test subjects).
Furthermore, the study leaves unanswered whether this is a gender-specific mechanism (i.e., if only women have it), a sexuality-specific mechanism (i.e., if only those who are sexually attracted to the gender of the crying person find their arousal diminished), or if it's a species-wide mechanism (i.e., everyone, regardless of gender or sexuality, will find their arousal reduced when they encounter the tears of any other human being).
And finally, there's the most gaping, ridiculously ignored fact: the effect a pheromone or volatile olfactory chemical substance has is extremely limited. We have pheromones in our hair and skin and their ranges have been repeatedly confirmed: you have to be very close in order to feel the effects. If the effect tears have is biological, then it should only work within a certain range, which is empirically not the case. There is a psychological (or sociological) component to the whole issue and trying to be simplistic/reductionist and blame it all on biology lets us wash our hands of psychosociological responsibility.
That is the worst kind of science: the sensationalist kind. I'm pretty sure everyone already knew what the study was going to turn up and they simply went through the motions to publish something sensationalist. Ugh. I wouldn't be surprised if they faked or rushed the whole thing and nobody bothered to fact-check or repeat it.

My personal favorite are the stories which are utter trash and get loads of reviews. Why? Because all the authors "buddies" review to up the count. Are the reviews meaningful? Nope, not at all. In those stories, you'd be LUCKY to see actual concrit that either hasn't been deleted by the author, or caused an attack of the reviewer by the author and his or her little friends .
When I go through the archive looking to actually read something in a fanworld I'm unfamiliar with, I'm more likely to read something with many hits and little or no reviews, than to read something with smaller hits/reviews ratio.
When I actually have the time to read, I do leave a review.
