That is one of the biggest problems with Sues, that they are not realistic, The details of the setting are ignored and other things stuffed in, like the one famous Sue who clothed herself in American goth boutiques and chain stores in a HP story. Or very commonly, a complete unfamiliarity how people got/get around without cars and trains. Simple fact checking would take about 15 seconds online, because people still do endurance rides on horses as competition or drive buggies through the countryside in places. I don't know how many times a read had come to a screeching halt because I'm going WTF when I reach something that's not a simple typo but a serious lack of understanding by the writer, If they have a beta, too, I really don't know why their artistic vision requires that they keep a travel detail when it's not a part of their story and it makes them look really bad. Lack of believability kills a reader's enjoyment.
I think you are probably right when the Sue lovers get upset at more realistic depictions. They confuse realistic competence with Sue 'perfection.' That is actually a little sad that they believe that women cannot be accomplished and three dimensional What it says about their expectations and society's, is troubling as well. A recent review was upset that my lead still had to follow orders even after the mission ended, that she couldn't do everything she wanted because she was the lead.
I haven't been accused of Sue very often, almost never, though my leads hit a few traits their Sue purity scores are good.. A strong competent lead will do that in fanfic, especially if they fit the standard for the universe. Magic in a Harlequin romance is special, but in a high fantasy or a CRPG is normal.
Yeah I ran my various leads through a Sue purity test, just to be sure. The problem is the ones who write the worst Sues are convinced that they aren't.

I look forward to the day you resurrect this series, or add other works in the fandom.  If you're looking for a beta at the time, hit me up.  Email is the display name used above at gmail dot com.

Awesome way to learn characterization. I was into D&D years ago. Got me started with creating characters, and led to writing. I'm not a frequent back story O.C. writer. I prefer to throw my O.C. characters to the proverbial rabid wolves form line one. Brings out lots of flaws, and shows the subtle sicknesses so to say. Then again, I tend to write the psycho loner that thinks He/she has to save the world. My O.C. characters last only so long a necessary to carry off the plot requirement. Most of my characters tend to be somewhat psychotic with illusions of grandeur that make them easy enough to kill off as soon as they finish their job.
I did enjoy your how to Mary Sue though. That made me smile. It usually is the oh so perfect that irritates everyone around. Then again, I've known an FBI lady my uncle worked with for several months who was damned near perfect. Took nearly four months to find a single flaw in that one. She was scary perfect. All I can say is that when I found out she had driven herself into a really huge emotional hole from the stress, she finally became human. It took her needing emergency surgery to put her damaged guts back together because she had so many bleeding ulcers for people around her to recognize that there is such a thing as an imposter of perfection. One thing I would love to see is the Cannon that sees and O.C. as perfect. Then show the O.C. away from the Cannon do something like bulimia fits or any kind of huge emotional crack up where the other characters can't see the supposed perfect one completely lose it. the O.C. resumes his or her spotlight on the stage with the cannons, and voila, you have seen how imperfect and fake the O.C. is pretending to be.

With much help from Nexcess, things are now resolved.  Apparently, someone was attempting either a DDoS or a hack, neither of which was ultimately successful.  Nexcess will be monitoring for unusual activity, and manta2g is adding further security layers to the code.
I'm 90% complete with data restore in the comics subdomain.
For stories where the chapters didn't quite convert right (it's a long and involved process as to why, so I'll not bore you), you'll see black diamonds with question marks in them instead of punctuation.  To temporarily fix this, set the encoding in your browser to Windows-1252.  This will make the punctuation display.  We are manually going through and fixing all these chapters, so that the conversion to utf8 is finally completed.

Kurahieiritr reacted to Melrick in Can I offer paid commission for stories on AFF?
I’d like to offer paid commission for stories here.  Is that allowed?
No.  That’s the short answer.  And now a more detailed answered for those of you who don’t have the attention span of a hyperactive 2 year old.
Firstly, let’s be clear what we mean by ‘paid commission’.  Basically, you want someone to pay you money to write a certain kind of story.  The commissioner might have the exact details in mind, or they might only supply you with the very basics and leave the rest up to you.  We don’t allow these.
There’s an extremely good reason why we don’t allow paid commission on fan fiction: It’s illegal!  Always has been, always will be.  You can’t profit from someone else’s copy-written works; that’s just simple legal facts 101.  Doing so could land you in a lot of trouble for doing it in the first place, and us for hosting it.
But what about commission on original works?  The answer is still no, I’m afraid.
There’s no law against that, it’s true, but it’s still against our Terms of Service.  Adult Fan Fiction isn’t an indie publishing house; it’s nothing more than a story archive.  Work written on paid commission becomes the property of the person for whom it was written.  Given that you accepted payment, our Terms of Service would prohibit your posting that work under your account.  Similarly, the person who commissioned the work could not post it, because it is not their work, any more than a novel I purchased for my Kindle would be mine for the purposes of posting it online.  We just don’t want to go down that particular road.  Everything here is free and we want to keep it that way.
There are other story archive sites out there that couldn’t care less about this, so if this is important to you then I’d recommend trying one of them (and crossing your fingers, if you’re offering commission on fan fiction).  But for us, it’s not allowed and will be shut down the moment we see anyone advertising paid commission services.

    Hey, Kura!
What we need is for your co-author to email us with permission for you to post the story on your account. If they have an AFF account, their pen name would be good. If not, we'll need their email address for our records. We never publish that information, but we do need to have it.

The picture of "George Glass" (actually a CPR dummy being lugged around by Jan Brady) that I use as my avatar on other sites did not have the right dimensions to use on AFF. So I found a sort of "invisible man" pic that at least conveys the sense of a wholly imaginary person.

Kurahieiritr reacted to Ryder in what made you want to write in the first place?
I started writing stories when I was a teenager to combat loneliness and severe depression. Writing was simply the best form of escapsm for me; it was a distraction, keeping my mind busy and at least a little bit excited. I wasn't living a life I wanted to live at all, didn't have any friends or a boyfriend, but I could at least lose myself in my characters' wonderful, exciting, love-filled lives, even if only for a moment. Though I only still write (from time to time) for the exact same reasons I started all those years ago.

Thank you Magus! Omg I was waiting for someone to say that. I understand the frustration with so many writers doing the stereotypical top/bottom roles in gay relationships. I do. And they have every right to be frustrated when there's a lack of representation for the other relationship options. That being said, strict top/bottom relationships are valid. Any relationship style you want to explore in writing is valid, and I hope new and seasoned writers alike don't let anyone tell them otherwise.
Pet peeves and frustrations are valid too. Just makes me feel bad to see writers told they're wrong about the subject matter they enjoy... I'm not talking about the obvious and hateful misconceptions, though. Screw those!

MYTH: you can make generalized statements about human behavior and sexuality.
FACT: Nope, won't work. There are as many preferances as there are possibilities and if its possible then someone somewhere is doing it. So if you are trying to classify gay, straight, or Bi; well you're gonna piss somebody off...so take heart yaoi fangirls, some where out there your fantasy is coming true
    Just my two cents...

Myth: If a gay guy hangs around with other guys, they must be gay too.
Uh, no. I'm sure it happens -sometimes- especially in locations/situations with a vivid gay/lesbian scene, or in areas where the majority of straight people persecutes them, but generally speaking, no. I used to be part of a group of friends. One guy was gay, three were straight, one was bisexual with no preference either way, and another just didn't know, then the females, one was bisexual with slight preference for females, one (me) bisexual with no preference either way and the other five were straight or didn't know/care/etc.
Oh, and one was an asexual, hetero-romantic female.
Myth: If a gay guy spends a lot of time with a straight male, he must be trying to turn him gay.
That assumes a lot of things, such as that gays only hang out with males they're (romantically or sexually) interested in. Which is not true. It also assumes that someone can be turned to a different sexuality, or that all gay guys believe it's possible. I highly doubt that.
Myth: If a straight guy spends a lot of time/is friends with a gay guy, it means they're always secretly bi-curious, bisexual or gay.
No. Just plain no. Not to say that it never happens, but always?
Myth: Lesbians fall in love with every female they come across, and if said female is in a (heterosexual) relationship, they'll attempt everything to break that relationship so that they can get the girl.
No more than that a gay guy would fall in love with every male he comes across (unfortunately, that myth seems to be going around a lot too), or that every straight person falls in love with everyone of the opposite gender they come across with.
Myth: If a girl hangs out with a lot of guys, she's either a slut or lesbian.
Gotta hate that stereotype. Why are females apparently not allowed to get along better with males than females without immediately being a slut or lesbian? -sigh-
Myth: Bisexuals want sex with every person they come across.
Nope. I am bisexual. Does that mean I want sex with everyone I come across? Hell. No.
Myth: There is no such thing as a stable, long-term lesbian or gay relationship.
False. My former neighbours are a lesbian couple who have been together for over twenty years now and married (gladly, that's possible here in the Netherlands) for over ten.

I know it is a myth that all gay/any relationship has a strict top and bottom. But I must admit that the majority of people who are inclined to discuss their sex live with me are set in their ways and always top or bottom. A large part of this is due to these people being a part of the BDSM community. I do however feel in the case of fanfiction some of the original authors/producers wrote overly emotional emo and or girly male characters to begin with. and those particular characters I feel just belong on their knees or need to top once or twice to get over themselves.
I have also had some friends, male, female, trans, straight, bi and gay cry on my shoulder, I've done it a few times to friends it doesn't have anything to do with my preferences in bed. I'm still a guy. So yeah it happens maybe a bit too much in fanfiction and BL and Yaoi, but we have tear ducts for a reason. Vulcans on the other hand do not have tear ducts and therefore should never cry (as it is physically impossible).

    Myth: All homosexuals are pedophiles.
Umm, FALSE. I don't know where people get this idea, or even when I first heard this stupidity, but, there you go. That's like saying "all straight people can be trusted with children". Men rape/molest little girls and women rape/molest little boys in Hetero-land just as often as it occurs in in the homosexual world.

I have to agree with this. The only time that I can orgasm from penetration only is when I am on my period. I don't know why, but any other time, no matter how wet I get (And I fucking drip down my legs, people) I can't get enough stimulation from penetration to orgasm. I need my clit stimulated most of the time except for those five wonderful days I mentioned before.
    Also...
Myth: Women can not get pregnant when they are on their period.
Truth: FALSE!!! I have known several women who can not get pregnant at any other time! How's that for a biological kick in the nuts? Which is why protection at all times is necessary.
And guys, when she's on the rag, wearing a condom can prevent her from getting the mother of all yeast infections since everything is wide open for obvious reasons.

thank you for saying so! My cousin and his husband have a daughter through his sister using his husband's dna and everyone in the family was freaked out, not because of the process, but because there would be a child in a 'gay' home. Recently, his mother was deemed unfit by the state of Nebraska to, not only have anymore children, but be able to care for the ones she has. He has ten other siblings that were being looked at to care for their five year old sister and twin infants, but he was the only one given the sister because, out of all of them, he was the only one they deemed fit to have a child! Naturally, this created even more screaming between families, but if the state of Nebraska agrees that he is the best parent out of everyone on that side of the family, that should be good enough for my mother and her relatives.
That is another myth that needs to be listed. It isn't as strongly believed as it was before, but it is still out there: some people believe that two men or two women cannot raise a child because the missing gender parent would somehow mess up the development of the child. If you're going to believe in that and want to create a law saying that no homosexual couple can have a child, then you must also create the same law for a single parent that has no intention of marrying. A man and a woman can screw up a child and a gay couple can produce well adjusted children. I look at my cousin's daughter and see the truth in that. She is brilliant, kind, and loves her two daddies more than anything. Then, I have to look at some of my cousin's brothers. Raised by a man and a woman, both church going Catholics, they abused and neglected their children until half of them became so messed up, one of them ended up and jail and the rest of that half can't hold down jobs or have families because of their problems. I don't believe that sexuality of the parent has anything to do with how you turn out. As for that myth that gay couples create gay children and straight, capable parents create straight children, that's a myth, too. Awhile back, one of my gay aunts had a child. He is now twenty-three and happily married to a Korean woman, hoping very much for a child. Then there's me who has a mother and a father who are both Republican Conservatives, Christian, and almost died of a stroke when I told them I was a lesbian.

I read somewhere that in women multiple orgasm is a learned response, and therefore women are more likely to experience it as they get older/more practiced at sex, making it correspondingly rare for first timers and young women. Whereas men tend to lose the ability to come more than once (always assuming they ever had it) as they age.
Don't you just feel SO sorry for those guys?
On the flip side - there has to be SOME compensation for periods/pregnancy/menopause!
