  1. Ah! I see. Okay, I am also located in central time and can certainly be on during that time.
  2. Got the link and cleared cache, history, everything (just in case). Unfortunately I'm still getting the same invalid message when clicking the link. 😓
  3. Apologies, I meant when I clicked the link sent to me, I was still getting the page that said the reset link was no longer valid. I tried to copy & paste the link but still got the same page indicating the link was not valid. If there is something else I should be trying, like if I need to clear cache or something I’m absolutely willing to try! Thank you in advance!! I know this whole thing has been frustrating for everyone involved and y’all work so hard to keep this site up and running. Thank you for everything y’all do!
  4. Strange, unfortunately it’s still not working. I tried copying and pasting it in a separate tab, too, but got the attached error saying it’s still invalid. Am I missing something?đŸ€”
  5. Thank you, BronxWench! I successfully received the link and authenticated the account but unfortunately haven’t had any luck resetting the password. Every attempt tells me the password reset link is no longer valid.😭
  6. To add to the list of requests – I recall when the announcement was made but after checking spam/junk folders, I never located a verification e-mail unfortunately. I opted to wait since it appeared there were some issues still ongoing but I still never got one. I attempted a password reset, but the links sent did not have the word “password” anywhere in the URL (if I was reading past posts correctly). This be my account down here if that helps at all: https://members.adult-fanfiction.org/profile.php?no=1296894852 I’ll continue to wait out this issue patiently as I know this whole ordeal has been difficult for many admins. ^^
  7. It could just be some people are waiting for the finished product, and I know that as long as the person my stories are intended for enjoyed them, public opinion doesn’t matter. I also realize I’m posting fics for a fandom that’s probably long since gone, but I’m a bit sad my story with sex is still getting way more hits than my story without sex. :D:safetocomeout: Again, it could just be because some people are waiting for the finished product. I dunno – it’s a conflicted feeling. Again, the people the stories are dedicated for: only their opinion really matters.

I’ve noticed a similar trend on hits with my main potter fanfic, which has two versions, a clean and an explicit – hit counters definitely favor the smut/sex-filled story.

I fear the omens are true. A large number of AFF users are truly colossal perverts.

  8. Wow! It’s been a while! So the second installment to my Saiyuki (fanfic) series is 98% finished. The person the story was gifted for gave me some additional feedback so I just gotta quick make some changes to the ending. Until then, 8 chapters are posted on AFF with 7 more to go. I’m glad she liked it despite it being way different than she originally requested.

  9. That feeling when beta reader 1 says the stuff you have sounds good because she goes wherever the author wants to their readers but beta reader 2 says there’s too much information being thrown all at once and everything is difficult to follow. TT-TT

Time for some (hopefully) quick edits!

I'd offer to take a look at a snippet for you, but I have a tendancy to be tough on background info so there's a good chance I'd be on beta number 2s side lol.

@Kei0523 That’s a very interested reader, cherish them!

For me and my stories, I’d definitely pay attention to a “too much” comment.  It’s *way* too easy to write an information overload, because you know your story, you know your details, your style, and so it makes sense to you, and perhaps a faithful reader.   Unless words are at a premium, I’d be considering breaking that apart, either in multiple scenes, or simply shifting some of the less important details to later in that scene (or even other scenes).  And the beginning of a story is much more susceptible to this.  That’s my two cents.

Haha valid points all around! ^^

I tend to be unnecessarily descriptive and provide too much detail or information all at once. That was one of the hardest challenges with the first fic I posted on AFF. That roadblock is what ended up fueling my hiatus because I knew exactly what I wanted for the climax of this one scene, didn’t want to give up a single detail, and in the end I had to accept the fact that it just didn’t mesh well with how I wanted to present the ending of the story.

Many thanks, both of you! This truly does help! :D

  10. Hmm...my muse does not care for the character created for her. But if i write her with all the characteristics she wants, she'd be this Mary Sue i've read so much about.

I really don't think you have to worry about writing a Mary sue. If it feels right going in that direction, go with it. Trust your instincts. Some of my favorite characters in best sellers would technically be Mary sues according to the typical criteria, but were so interesting and believable that they don't feel like Mary sues.

Don't fret. Listen to your muse. You can worry about any mary sueness once it's done and the editing begins.

  11. Prologue to the Tsuki story is up! Let’s se how dis go!:yahoo:

  12. @CloverReef Haha Yeah, I'm not even sure what i'm looking for myself. The character is definitely human, basically a priestess that abandoned her duties because she thought it was boring but that's about all I've got. It's one of those things where when writing for others, having them embodied into these OCs, I know exactly who their characters are (even if they sort of change from how i initially wanted to portray them as the story plays out), but I know exactly how i'm wanting scenes to play out. When writing a story catered to me, my alter ego or personality, or completely have the freedom to make her to be anyone i want, I have no idea.
  13. I get that every character an author writes has a bit of themselves or their mind embodied into the characters. My thing is I could be overthinking this topic. The 5-part series that I’m writing follows 5 different OCs interacting with their respective pairing in the anime adaption of Saiyuki with all 5 OCs loosely crossing over into each other’s stories. The first story was a piece of cake, aside from a long writing hiatus. The second one is coming along nicely although I think I’m trying to do too much in a short period of time. Stories 3 and 4 have a general basic outline of each OC along with a general foundation of how those stories will play out. I’m not really a writer so this has been quite the learning journey for me, but I’ve noticed I’ve come to really know a character as I feel them out in the scenes while trying not to make them Mary Sues (a term I just came across since hopping on the forums haha). Stop rambling! Okay, so the meat of this question: each OC is basically the alter ego of a friend in my circle. The 5th OC, however, is my own alter ego and I am stumped as to who she is. So how do you write an embodiment of yourself as an OC if you’re not sure where to go with it? Tips or suggestions? I found that if I write down the strengths and weaknesses of a character, what makes them unique, their struggles, while some of that may still be in the story, the rest is completely out the window as I watch them interact with their environment, or as they approach a situation differently (if any of that makes sense). I kind of have an idea about her character, but since her story will be the last I write, I haven’t put a whole lot of thought into it. I just gave her a race, a title, and a bit of an attitude but nothing too sassy. In my mind, because I don’t have much of a background for her or even an idea of how she will grow as she interacts with her respective pairing in the story, I’m afraid she may be a Mary Sue. All 4 stories, I know exactly how everything is going to play out and exactly what sort of rating to give each story but for her, because she is supposed to be my own alter ego, I see nothing. (I spent most of my early years having my alter ego be a magical girl in the Sailor Moon universe so this is new territory haha.) Perhaps I should just wait until it’s her time. So why would this be important now? I’m just not wanting to go through 4 stories and then when it’s time for story 5, if I write somewhere that she vaguely appears in another story or the other OCs recognize her from centuries ago in a previous life, I want to make sure it all fits when writing story 5 so it sounds authentic and natural. Not just random like: “oh, yeah, btw, us 4 OC’s know you too! What a coincidence lolz”. I’d like to just barely hint at her before her story. -Kei0523
  14. That awkward moment your search history for your story becomes questionable.

..... now i understand this fear.

And one thing i didn't consider when starting my second story was just how much background i'd have to breathe into my OC. And again, giftfic, but i'm choosing to post it publicly which means, friend aside, i need to give this character enough of a foundation that the reader would be enticed to read more about her since the story will not contain sexual content like the succubus story.

To be fair. I’m sure writers tend to have questionable search histories.

Searching can be quite annoying too, at times, like when Google keeps insisting on giving me cures to diarrhea when I'm trying to give it to a character!  Stupid google...grumbles.

  15. Hahaha Saiyuki has PLENTY of fodder to craft M/M. oh, the fodder.
  16. Now THIS is a thread I can get behind! The series i've thrown OC's into is male dominated. While there are female characters, it's few and far between which means plenty of fodder for the yaoi and WAFF tags. My first story i feel is fine as she's an OC (succubus) thrown into the series in a plausible manner and she doesn't require a whole lot of backstory. Her motives are clear and it's also clear as to the type of story it's going to result in. My worries are integrating other OCs that may border WAFF tags and if that'll generate interest for people to read them at all as I do try to stay true to the original characters and universe they reside in. While they're all giftfics, there is a part of me that still wants to throw those out into the world for some light reading. But i definitely worry they won't be as well recieved as the succubus story.
  17. Hmm... my second fanfic story is portraying another friend. She wants a character death , for her to die protecting the male lead the character is in love with. She's not one for tears but wants me to try getting her to grow attached to this character and cry.

Now it's a one-sided love, it's going to be manipulative, and he will use her for his own gain. They share similar goals but she will have no idea how extreme he's going with his own agenda. I'm not going to expose that this character has been strung along by someone she loves until the climax of the story when she dies (gonna twist this cuz i don't really want to kill off the character).

This is challenging for me and actually haunts me because i feel that angle is too much of a blueprint and typical. But another part of me feels if it's written decent enough, that can be overlooked.

Killing off characters can definitely be tough, especially when they’re main characters and you’ve grown sentimentally attached to them.  Of course, depending on the story and the role of the character, they can simply be there to be bullet sponges (ie, infamous red shirts of Star Trek fame).

    2. CloverReef

      CloverReef

You’re absolutely right, that if written well enough, cliches (I’m assuming that’s what you meant by ‘typical’) can be overlooked, even awesome. I, personally, would never suggest someone avoid a cliche just because it’s a cliche. I would, however, suggest writers avoid them when they’ve already used a lot of ‘em. That’s when it starts to get eye-rolly.

Sounds like you’ve set up quite the challenge for yourself! Good luck!

  18. Thank you! I'm more of a lurker than anything else, but I was very inspired by some of your comments throughout the thread. It's very encouraging. ^^
  19. That's honestly what I'm hoping for. Haha I mean, no biggie either way but as I amï»żï»żï»ż posting it for others to read, there's still that part of me that hopes it'sï»ż caught the attention of those that enjoy the fanfic category.ï»żï»żï»ż
  20. I actually felt a little of this coming back with my one and only story. I mean, I don’t have a lot that I’ve written or anything, but when I initially posted my story, I was basically ecstatic it was received so well. I think I became overconfident since I’m a novice at best and didn’t have the ending fully mapped out in my head. That’s what prevented me from finishing the story up until this year. The story was written for a friend, but I still had similar feelings as you, CloverReef. I was thinking: “are the readers that initially read the story still even on this site anymore? Is there anyone that’s been patiently waiting for me to finish this WIP?” I suppose the train of though is not the same since this story was a gift fanfic while you have a lot of originals, which is a lot more pressure when it comes to leaving a lasting impression on a reader and enticing them to come back for more.
  21. Relieved I finally finished my Naneko x Seiten Taisei story. I hit a roadblock for so long, the last few months really helped crank out the last of her story. It actually helped create more backstory with my next OC x Saiyuki story. ~K
