There are actually a looot of interesting word processors out there for free. I’ve tried most of them because I’m not a fan of the typical MS Word style. Too many features I don’t use so it takes up too much Memory. Like yWriter, which is designed by a writer for writers. It lets you plan and organize scenes and keep character lists in the writing file and much more. Downside was it cluttered the folder it was in, which was what made me ultimately stop using it.

There are a lot of distraction-free processors (Designed to write full screen without panels/menus visible) , from simple no-bells-and-whistle ones, to slightly more complex. My favourite of these is FocusWriter, because it has a spellcheck and wordcount, and it allows you to customise the background so I can write on any picture I stick in it, from blue birds to half naked men to, I don’t know, Grumpy cat. These kinds of writers you’ll wanna pair with something like Libreoffice or WPS writer for formatting/editing.

But when it comes to ones like MS word, I agree with the others, Libreoffice is excellent. I like it much better than OpenOffice even if they are from the same vein. If you want something lighter with similar features, WPS writer is an excellent lightweight alternative, and Google docs is great. I use google exclusively for collab work, but I prefer to work offline for my solos with Focus/Libre combo (since I’m on Linux and WPS doesn’t work well on mint, sadly.)

An unusual one I haven’t mentioned is Jarte. Some people looove it, some people hate it. It’s certainly different. Have fun with your return to writing! Trying new processors is fun. I envy you!

I agree with everyone, JayDee.  LibreOffice is quite functional, and does everything I need it to do.  Google docs is great for sharing and working with others in!

Thanks again folks, especially for the re-assurance on the google docs sharing.
I actually use a much more recent version of word occasionally in the day job, but that’s not a good setting to write porn with
I’d not heard about LaTeX, but yeah it does seem like much of the typesetting features wouldn’t be needed for me since I mostly publish to AFF and don’t put out e-books or similar.

You have to actually share a Google Doc with someone deliberately. You can invite them to edit, or share with them by naming them when you click the blue “Share” button in the corner. So, unless you’ve opened up the document, it remains private.

I have Word on my laptop, but I still use Google Docs because of the ability to look at the same documents on my computer and my phone. (This is handy when inspiration strikes while I’m on the train or in line at the grocery store.) And there’s a little icon that shows whether a document has been shared with someone else.

I use LibreOffice from draft to formatting final layouts for self-pub. (Open Office pretty much lost it devs after it was required and hasn’t added anythig in over 10 years) I use iDrive for backups which has been as low as 10$ for a year.

JayDee, if you’re coming from word 2000, I suspect libreoffice is closer to what you’re used to than the latest offering in Word.
While I’ve been shifting from LibreOffice to LaTeX, I still recommend Libreoffice. (LaTeX has a learning curve with way less GUI).

Thanks guys! Im leaning even more towards google docs now. I already have the google account even! I know google docs has the document sharing features, is it easy to check you havent inadvertently shared something? Some of my stuff really needs to ensure it has a detailed Dont read any further notice. Especially the WAFF. I suppose one way to do it would be to start with google docs and then maybe look more at libre office if I am missing the extra functions.

I quite like Google Docs. I do use it now for collaborative writing, and it does have some distinct advantages in the auto save feature as well as the ability to access your documents from anywhere you have internet access. It has a word counter, spell checker, and I’m not sure about double words.
LibreOffice is also very useful, and free, and definitely mirrors Word’s functionality.

Dragon prints are visits to the story, so each time someone visits the story, it will add a dragon print. Flipping through multiple chapters in a story will not add dragon prints, however. One per visit.

Futanari is an anime-specific term, whereas hermaphrodite refers mostly to the medical condition of having genitalia of both genders, although it may or may not be functional, and most are infertile.
Warm and Fuzzy Feelings is the overly happy-ever-after trope, the neatly sewn up, everyone has cake and tea and loves each other sort of thing. Like kittens on the internet, and puppies.

I don’t believe it does. It’s just opening the story that does it.

So, most of the story codes are at least rather self-explanatory, but there are some that I’m having trouble deciding exactly when they should be used. If anyone could help me out with this I’d be extremely grateful.
The codes I’m having trouble with:
Angst – At what “amount” of anguish should this actually be used? Obviously, if the whole story is about someone getting over their grief of a loved one this should apply, but what if it’s only a brief scene(s)?
Contro – I’m assuming that this doesn’t apply to subjects that already have tags such as rape or bestiality.
CR, corruption – What kind of corruption does this refer to? Moral, spiritual, supernatural? Or just anything that could be considered corrupting?
HC, Hurt/Comfort – Obviously someone is hurt and somebody else comforts them but is that it or does “comfort” include sex? Also, how much of the story has to be about HC for the tag to apply (similar question to Angst)?
Herm – What’s the difference between this and FD? Is it the “male equivalent”?
Hum, Humanoid – Does it mean things like elves, orcs, and trolls? And is it a tag you would use for sex with these creatures, or just in general like the Anthro tag?
OC – Does this have to be specified when writing within the Original archives?
Spank – Does this refer to sexual gratification from spanking only?
WAFF – I’m just overall confused by this one.
Thank you in advance for any help on these tags.

    Thank you so much, Bronx!
Haha, Elrohir is a handful alright! Luckily for him, Erestor has very capable hands, and lots of firm guidance at the ready. I am quite sure he’ll get exactly what he needs, once Erestor has finished with this first little lesson about the twins and their capacity (or not) for being “interchangeable”… I actually don’t feel as though Erestor has a favourite. I think he intends to appreciate their differences, despite their identical physical appearance.
Elladan is a lot more serious about this adventure than Elrohir. He knows Erestor has something quite out of the ordinary to offer; something that runs much deeper than a little playtime. Elrohir will observe Elladan soon, and at this point I am not sure what his reaction will be. Will he seek to protect Elladan, and therefore court Erestor’s displeasure? Hmm… it might be a good thing if Elladan assures his brother of his consent in advance.
I am glad you’re enjoying it! This really is one of my favourite stories to write at the moment. Though it is some time off yet, I really can’t wait to let the two stories merge a little, and show the letters Erestor is receiving from Glorfindel and the twins while he is in Eryn Galen. They are going to be hilarious!

    Hi Argleena, and thank you!
lol… I think it’s going to go exactly where Erestor wants it to, or else But I’m sure the twins will get a great deal out of it too.

I am glad you like the new side to Legolas… I feel it makes him into a much more rounded character. Plus, it allows us to play with Thranduil, of course!
Ha… nothing good for the man, that is true. Legolas might find himself suffering a bit of a flashback, lol, but this time Erestor is there too. And that is all the hinting I will do *g*
You are such a fabulous reviewer – thank you for all the encouragement you give me!

If Erestor’s plan works, they’ll both find this a trial. They’ll each want what the other is getting so much they’ll probably be drooling over each other. In Elrohir’s case, that point might come sooner.
Elladan is really quite calm about it all. But I think you are right about Elrohir – seeing Elladan like that will affect him deeply. And I do believe Elladan will be willing to beg for Erestor to have him… poor sod. He isn’t going to get what he wants. Not yet, anyway.
I’m so glad you enjoy this story! If I am honest, it is my favourite of the two. Dark!Erestor is kind of nice to write. *g*

Isn’t that the best part? The Noldor were not so very peaceful and civilized then, were they? Quite the difference from Elrond.

Well, with so much rambling going on I guess I should poke my head in too, heh. Not a lot to be said that hasn’t been more eloquently covereded, so I’ll just share a little personal axiom I try to remind myself of often when I write: this is art, an ultimately formless creation incapable of perfection thus forever containing the potential of being more perfect. Basically, my way of over-thinking advise I got back when I used to draw (terribly). You can tweak something all day, but part of the skill is learning when you must let your creation go and let it simply be.
As for feedback … yeah, that is the bottomless hunger of the creative soul. I’m sure we all feel you there. -_-; I’ve been fairly lucky with feedback working on an original story, but there’s always that doubt, that uncertainty that the work was worthwhile. Honestly, I think that point of self doubt is part of the very basis of creativity. If any of us could throw together a few paragraphs and feel content, we wouldn’t build worlds and fictional lives that, if we can just get it to work blast it, communicate to a stranger something they can feel just as attached to as we do.
So … keeping pounding your head into the wall, I guess. In my experience, there is usually candy on the other side. Addictive, self-replicating candy you can only hope to gobble up as much as you can as the new pages fly by, all before the mountain of sweets goes poof and another wall hiding even more candy waits.
    Annnd on a side note…
… yeah, I did the spreadsheet shuffle too and it did help. I might not have known what readers were thinking chapter to chapter, but by golly some of them had to be returning again and again to keep thinking it. There is some real value in that.
(Now I must wander off again to fret over getting a big head after only one story. )
