Ugh! I soooo wanna take part, but I’ve started and given up on three halloween fics so far! lol Goddamnit. 

I lose at least 2 HDD a decade and one took a good chunk of writing when I was doing parody more. I’d been thinking SSDs were better, but I never had anyone who could save files for me. I lost a 40k chunk as I didn’t know much on how to. I still miss that angsty story, but recreating it just did not flow. Guess I’ll stay with my HDD/cloud backup. Ineed to figure how to save my email boxes and custom dictionary.

I went for 20 years without a single HDD failure.  20 years.  I get SSDs and 3 failures in less than a year, all different brands, all top brands.  At least they were only used as starter drives so none of the important info was lost, which was just as well, because when SSDs fail, you rarely recover any data from them.  Still a pain in the arse though.  SSDs will get better and more reliable in time, but at the moment they’re far from ‘bullet proof’ or ‘fail safe’ like sales people keep trying to tell us.

Absolutely loving the new selection that’s being added on! Do you have any recs for any Netflix stuff right now? I definitely recommend It Follows if you’ve not seen it already – it’s just tremendous.

On HDDs, I have more issues earlier with Seagate too, though WDs have failed on me.  Most of my SDDs are Samsung, good luck so far.

A good backup plan should mitigate failures, which so far have been none with my SSDs but plenty with HDDs.  Maybe it's my luck or something.  Misbehaving OS, or the accidental reformat..been there, done that, and can't recall specifics because I try to block those things out.

It’s the opposite for me: I’ve had little trouble with HDDs but loads of trouble with SSDs failing.  And anecdotal evidence suggests that’s not at all unusual.

Technology is terrific until it plays up, and then it’s Satan incarnate. 

I do most of my writing on the desktop, fortunately, and everything is either Google Docs or saved to flash drives as well as hard drives, so it’s not a lot to recover. All my really important stuff resides on the desktop, and gets backed up to external hard drives as well.

Omg, I know, right?! Me and my mother have a tradition that we watch a horror movie together every day in October. She’s a huge zombie fan so every second day is, of course, zombie time. It always makes me happy to see fellow horror buffs on here: not a whole lot around here in a small town on the prairies. 

And a little office, with a bookshelf for my reference stuff, and a door I can close when I want to write undisturbed… LMAO!
 

It’s true! Usually the horror film offerings are bleak, but not in October!
 

And, having a proper desk, even for a laptop, could be a nice thing to have at the lake.

Never said anything against the laptop … BW can still get the laptop *AND* kick the kid out
 

LOL, some imps are coughing “eviction, eviction...”   But a laptop is more convenient for the lake, since you can sit with it anywhere, reading nook, deck, pool, etc… 

Kick the kid out, that’d give you more peace and quiet.

Very true on both accounts… but then you know what you’re doing when you start poking at their innards. Me poking at the computer innards would be like letting a plumber do a gastric bypass… 

This particular halloween fic has been tough to get started, with so many options, but not wanting to stomp over where my other stories are heading.  Same universe, as always, with a nice bonus that it’ll set something up to feed into another story.

That sounds like a good idea. I’m just going to write a scene with established characters so the temptation doesn’t strike me to write something longer.

Thanks… I’ve got exactly twenty minutes before I have to mess about getting ready for work. If I go. Not at all certain right now. Though if I go, I’ll probably feel better. Something else to think about and all that.
