    Thank you, JayDee, so far it’s been pretty decent. Just lazying about and enjoying the sunlight through my window at long last. I might even do something today

    Not only is there all that BS, but there’s also the massive variation in what works for whom. I recently went to a panel discussion in which 5 writers talked about, among other things, hashing out story ideas. Some of them absolutely needed someone to discuss ideas with; some just needed to say them out loud, even to a rubber ducky; and one said that articulating his ideas made him lose all interest in them.

    My Bunny went through a phase for a bit where he decided he wasn’t autistic. Our response was to ask him what he thought was going on, and he told us they hadn’t figured it out yet. This year, he’s decided to embrace being autistic. But really, as far as I’m concerned, he’s my Bunny, and my best travel buddy.
    Sadly, in order to get him the aid he’ll need throughout life, we do need “labels” no matter how much I don’t really like them. On the other hand, I like seeing him defy expectations, and do things people don’t expect him to have mastered. He’s really a cool kid, even given my obvious prejudice in his favor.

    I wrote a bunch of tips here actually, speaking of which, although I couldn’t remember where they were so I had to go hunting for them.

    @Praetor I attribute a good part of what I love about my own writing skill to a healthy exchange between writers. Twenty years of exchanging stories to beta and giving each other advice is the way I chose to evolve. It’s what works for me. It’s why I’m active on this site. Of course it wasn’t all good advice, but you learn to pick and choose what to take and what to shrug off. Doing your own thing is absolutely important too. I just prefer a balance of both.

    I’m at that age where I’ve realized how little I do know, so like @CloverReef I’m happy to continue to learn and expand my horizons, so to speak.
    Twitter has its uses. There are far worse places one can venture, like Tumblr. Now there’s a circle in Dante’s little playground writ large.

    Absolutely, the labels we use for ourselves should be respected.

    @CloverReef
    There are quite a few in favour of support labels over functioning labels, which gives a bit more than the functioning labels by telling how much support one needs and is interchangeable with a lot of things aside from autism. If you want to use functioning labels for yourself, cool. Who’s authority is it to stop you from doing what you’re comfortable with? As long as the functioning labels aren’t pushed/projected onto me, I’m not complaining. And I totally get the mind acrobatics thing. I’ve had to do that too at times.

    That’s interesting. I’ve always considered myself barely functioning. I was diagnosed with severe social phobia and was housebound for 15 years. So even though I appear normal and polite on the surface and people think there’s nothing wrong with me, I’m shut down on the inside. To me, the functioning label helps me express where I feel I stand, but at the same time, what that lil comic says in the link you gave makes a lot of sense. It can be used to dismiss or unknowingly be passive aggressive.
    I don’t know. I personally think labels are important. We need words to refer to bits and pieces of identities, not just to understand people and ourselves, but so we don’t have to twist into pretzels to have conversations about important bits of our lives. But at the same time labels can become loaded and offensive like that, so sometimes they need to change.
    lol sorry about the ramble. I just had to do mind acrobatics to sort out my thoughts.
