  1. Talk about a Darwin Awards candidate. Tigers are maneaters by choice because we're soft, easy prey. The tigers were just being tigers, and he was attempting suicide by large cat.
  2. If you're writing in third person, I would honestly say to do the prose descriptions in what you're most comfortable with, which in this case is British English. There are so many published authors who are British, who write prose descriptions and narrative in British English, and then do dialogue in whatever idiom is appropriate for the character. As a reader, I've never found it the least bit jarring, as long as it's consistent.
