ApolloImperium got a reaction from Shadowknight12 in SHAME on James Patterson!
So I'm watching a movie I had recorded off TNT Saturday and an ad for James Patterson's newest book. I've always enjoyed his Alex Cross series to I actually watched it instead of fast forwarding only to hear the following words from his mouth: "Buy this book or I'll have to kill off Alex Cross. Its very good by the way..."
*head thunks* Really Mr. Patterson? You are a New York Times Bestselling author! Do you really need to sales whore to sell books???
So with out further ado, here is the letter I wrote to conform to the 600 character count. Feel free to use it for your own letter!
    Contact Link for J.P
    Mr. Patterson,
I saw the commercial today for your new book & I am very disappointed in you! You, a NYT Bestseller, resorted to the lowest of behaviors – “If you don’t buy my book I’ll kill off the main character.” I lost respect for you after seeing that. It doesn’t matter if you meant it in jest, that type of behavior is unacceptable from a published author like yourself. It’s not accepted on major amateur fiction sites, so why should it be acceptable for you? Shame, shame, shame. I’m going to have to truly consider if I want to even bother reading any more of your books.
    Sincerely,

These are my replies to reviews of the Week 6 Challenge Cornucopia, "I'm Stuffed" (Bones): (Story) (Reviews)
Apollo: Bones is very complicated but I think she really does feel that she feels, even if she'll never admit it. At least she does show appreciation. It also gave me some satisfaction that they could pull one over on her, sort of April Fools, Halloween and Thanksgiving all wrapped up together. Oh, and again, big thanks for pointing out that bit that needed correcting to make the timeline fit.
Kisakimiko: I was trying to think of something that would keep what was inside invisible but keep the outside bones of the skeleton visible. In my mind the rough coating of grape lollipop just looks neat. It's a good thing I didn't have to explain how the coated just the outside of the thing while making sure that the stuff wouldn't stick to the fake bones.
Shadow Knight: At first I didn't even realize the last part involved some UST because it just seemed so natural for Brennan. They've connected on a very deep level and on the surface, but they're scared of the space in-between. As for the skeleton cornucopia, it seemed like a good gag but subconsciously I may have been thinking about how most family Thanksgiving dinners bring out some of the skeletons in our closets.
Yeah, I totally just made that last part up on the spot.
pittwitch: Thanks. It was fun to write.

    TOS Review: Archive Intensive Activities
Welcome to this week's TOS review. I'd like to take you on a journey into the center of our database... A tale of gentle giants and overloaded tables... Okay, you got me, we really won't be going into the database and it really isn't so much a tale, but maybe a fable since your supposed to learn from fables, right?
To give you a bit of history, the archive at this point is 7.7GB. Yes, that is giga with a g! Every single entry into the database creates an entry that takes space and with over 2 million entries? Well that adds up really fast! Because of that, when DemonGoddess took over the database, she immediately knew that changes needed to be made before the archive got very unwieldy.
After reviewing how the data was spread out the following changes were made: Author's Note chapters were no longer allowed and capped, review board conversations and lengthy review replies in chapter became taboo and an entire section (Challenges and Searches) was outsourced to the forum. Just to make sure everyone is on the same page, a breakdown is below:
    Author's Notes
Author's always want to talk with readers and we support that, however taking a chapter just for Author's Notes is no longer allowed because of the space that it takes in the Archive. Along the same note, we've capped the length to 600 words max to ensure that they aren't taking up a large amount of space. More indepth disclaimers, summaries, warnings and citations do not count towards the author's note length. If you have one at both the top and bottom of the chapter, the combined length cannot exceed the 600 word limit.
    Review Board Conversations
Each review is an entry in the database and as such, having conversations on the review board is not allowed because it takes up space. We know that author's want to talk to their readers, so what we recommend is to create a thread in the forums and link to it in the story. The Fan Fiction Category is open to guest posters so you can let your readers know they don't have to register. Now since review replies do count towards the 600 word count in Author's notes, again we recommend the forums!
    Searches/Challenges/Requests
These haven't been in the archive since May 2008 when they were moved to the forum. When DG made this change it cleared up 500MB of data, so you can see the value there.
Basic rule of thumb: If it's not a story, it doesn't belong in the archive.
    AFF 2011 Calendar Contest
Well we had to extend the contest because of so few entries, but we can't do it again! So there is just 24 hours left for submissions for the AFF 2011 calendar! TOS Review: Disclaimers
Welcome to this week's TOS Review: Disclaimer Issue.
Why are disclaimers important? Disclaimers are our biggest legal protection. As everyone knows, where fan fiction often gets in trouble is the fact that as authors, we are basing our stories off of copyrighted material. The most common legal argument that fan fictions writers and sites use to justify what they do is the Fair Use part of the copyright code. In this it states that copyrighted material can be used for transformative purposes, which is our loophole.
However with that loophole we still need to make sure that we are covered as much as possible. The site has reached out to friends in the legal field to determine what steps are best taken and the response was disclaim, disclaim, disclaim! That being said, they provided with basic aspects that should be in any disclaimer which we have based our disclaimer policy off of.
This doesn't just protect the site, this also protects you as a user. How you may ask? Because if an author gets up in arms about fan fiction, this protects you from being sued for profits as you state that you make no money from it.
That being said, disclaimers vary depending on the section you write for so here is a basic breakdown of what we look for:
    Fan Fiction
Name the world/title/fandom and say you don't own it.
Clearly state no money is made.
There are examples of what is needed, exactly, in the FAQ as well as in other areas.
    Real Person Fiction
Name the person or persons and say you don't KNOW them. Not that you don't OWN them.
State that it's a work of fiction.
Clearly state no money is made.
    Original Fiction
There are a number of requirements for original fiction/non fiction/poetry.
This link has it all exactly.
    Public Domain
These are things that copyright no longer applies to: Fairy tales, folk songs, religious works such as the Bible etc.
For these, use the information needed in an original disclaimer and note the work that inspired such as 'Cinderella' or 'Snow White' etc.
Basic things to keep in mind:
    - We need the fandom to be named, not the characters.
    - With original fiction we need to have a clear fiction and resemblance clause. That makes it so that somewhere down the road, John Smith can't come to us and say "Hey, that's based on me" and in turn we have to pull the work because without proof that it's NOT, we have no choice in such a for instance. That's where the resemblance clause is a protection to the author.
    - For original non-fiction, it's critical that the author clearly add the permissions clause. This is detailed in the link we posted earlier in the Original Fiction setting. Without having permission from the people you're writing about, it can cause the site issues in the future if the person you are writing about stumbles upon it and gets upset.
While not directly related to disclaimers, since we are discussing Original Non-Fiction, I would like to take the time to point out that authors should not write about real minors unless the person they are writing about is currently of age and consent information can be provided. Along the same lines, in real person fiction again, if the real person is a minor they cannot be written about.
So please, when one of our moderating staff asks you to correct a disclaimer, know that it is so the site can stay protected. The staff volunteer hours each week reviewing the archive to ensure compliance to our policies, so they honestly do deserve a round of applause for their dedication and not a hard time when they ask you to correct something.

    TOS Review: Minors
As you may have noticed last week, I did a review of part of AFF's T.O.S. regarding plagiarism. To ensure that everyone is aware of the major aspects of our Terms of Service, we will be doing a weekly column here in the news. This weeks topic will be minors on the forum/archive.
I think we've done a very good job being clear on the fact that you must be 18 years old to access the site through the splash page, age verification page, putting the RTA tag on our pages, as well as the TOS for both the archive and forums. Since we are an adult themed site, this is something that all users need to be aware of and we can always use an extra set of eyes. Having any users under the age of 18 puts the site in a very precarious legal position. I can't tell you how many times over the years we've dealt with angry parents threatening legal action despite our many efforts to keep them out.
I've heard all the excuses: "I just wanted to share my fiction," "I didn't know," "I'm not in the US, your rules don't apply," to "It's not fair." The fact of the matter is it does not matter. Unless you are 18, you are not welcome on AdultFanFiction.Net.
We know that kids will be kids and ignore the many warnings, but for those that have ignored them and are reading this: We take your presence here seriously. We will find you. If you don't believe me, take a look at the statistics as of September 6th, 2010 found here. If you are a minor reading this, I ask that you turn yourself in to our moderator team.
To all of our users that waited until they were 18? Thank you very much. Keep an eye out for any possible minors and please feel free to report it to our moderators so that we can investigate it and take appropriate action.
    Outlined below are the consequences:
    Minors
    First time offense
User is deleted, and databased so we have record
    Second offense
User is deleted, emailed and told not to return until after they're 18
    Third offense
    User is deleted, re-emailed
    Fourth offense
Account is taken over by the moderating team. As part of the take over, we edit the profile and put in sarcastic humor detailing why we took over the profile. Author is not allowed to return for a year. Where we've actually been able to find the true birthday, the return date is given in the profile.
If they're persistent enough to come back after that, then the ban is permanent.
    Posting for minors
Since minors aren't allowed on the site, posting for minors is also not allowed.
Author is deleted, no notification, nothing. If part of a writing group, the writing group is deleted, as well as any of the individual profiles for authors IN the writing group. These authors are allowed to come back, with the understanding that if they do it again, they will be deleted again, and at that point not allowed to return.
What determines 18 years old as the minimum age requirement
US Laws determine this. The site is hosted in the US, so age restriction laws (based on content and age restricted materials, which which means the users MUST be 18 years of age or OLDER) for users in the US apply to the site. It doesn't matter what age of consent is outside of the United States, as that is not relevant to how we have to work with age restrictions within the site. So, the rule of thumb here is, if one is old enough to vote in the United States, one is old enough to use the site. If you live elsewhere than the US, the minimum age still applies, whether or not your country allows this access at a younger age.

    Clean up Update
The following top levels have been created, or will be shortly:

in books subdomain - Twilight in cartoon subdomain - Kim Possible (coming soon) in comics subdomain - DC 'Verse Comics, DC 'Verse Cartoons, DC 'Verse Movies in xmen subdomain - Marvel 'Verse Comics, Marvel 'Verse Cartoons, Marvel 'Verse Movies To help facilitate story moving, here is what can be done. This is something requires a member assist.
Email to technicalsupport@adult-fanfiction.org, subject Cleanup req
Where a subcategory does not yet exist (this applies to the DC and Marvel top levels), start with the category req for it.
Then, link to the story you need moved to the new top levels. Re-add the story to the category if it already exists, if not, I will email you when it's created, and then add it then. DO NOT delete the old story. I need that for some of the data, which I will then add to the new upload. After I'm done with that, moving any attached reviews, and adding the story rating that was pre-existing, I will delete the old story. Alternatively, this can all be posted in the category requests forum. Once I've finished with any data migration needed done for that request, expect to see the topic closed. I would also ask where there are stories in process of migration already (such as Angel in the tv subdomain), that those users do this as well.
If everyone who's affected by this can help and follow the instructions above it will make the process go a lot faster as it means I only need to move reviews and rates, and change the dates to reflect the original add date, also create subcats where needed. None of which takes all that long. If I have to move each story, it can take hours depending on how many chapters I have to move etc. So your help is greatly appreciated!!
    Forum Updates
There was a minor update installed on 10/28. As always if you notice any bugs, please let us know.
If I have time this weekend, I have found a new arcade system that will work with the major upgrade we did recently and will be installing it. That way you will have games to play yet again!!!

ApolloImperium reacted to Shadowknight12 in Physical Sensation of Erection?
I think there's one or two things I can contribute with, that haven't been touched yet. For you girls, I think that the best way to imagine how an erection feels like, clothes or not, is to think of your clitoris. Some of you may not know this, but a clitoris is basically an internal penis. The actual clit would be the equivalent of the male glans (the 'head' of the penis) and it's just the tip of the larger body that extends behind your vaginal wall. If you want to know what an erection feels like, then get aroused and pay close attention to how your clit behaves. You'll notice that at first it's just small, but that as your arousal increases, it begins to swell with blood and become very responsive to pleasure. That's pretty much what we feel, too (and really, it's the exact same erectile tissue, the sensations are practically the same), including the build-up to an orgasm.
You can also draw a parallel between a clitoris and an uncut cock. A clit has a 'hood' covering it, called prepuce, which is pretty much the female equivalent of a guy's foreskin (so if you want to know how foreskin feels like, well... you have a way to find out). It protects the clit from abrasion and chafing. This varies from guy to guy and woman to woman, but generally, a woman who's not aroused or only slightly so might actually feel discomfort or pain if (for example) a guy rolls back the prepuce and tongues her clit directly. That happens to uncut guys who aren't fully hard, too. As the levels of arousal increase, the erectile tissue is capable of enduring more direct contact, to the point where it's actually very pleasurable for both to apply direct stimulation.
And finally, a penis is not (usually) something that can be turned on and off like a lamp. Going from limp to throbbing hard and back again isn't something that happens in a matter of seconds (save specific exceptions, like exceedingly powerful stimuli). There are stages of hardness, but the time that takes the guy to go from one to another varies depending on the guy in question and what's triggering the arousal. Also, not all guys have the same amount of stages. Some have just four, some have more, some may even have only three or two.
The first stage is limpness, which is the cock that hasn't even begun to experience arousal. This is the default state (when an erection is the default state, it's called priapism and it's a very hilarious illness). Then there's the 'stirring' stage, where the male first sees something vaguely arousing. He might catch a glimpse of cleavage or start fantasizing. The cock is not hard here, but it sends 'warning signs' to the guy, telling him that if he keeps going down that road, things are going to get stiff. If the guy is clothed, nothing is visible. If the guy is naked, his cock might twitch on its own or even roll lazily a little, across his leg/navel/hip. Might grow an inch or so if the guy's a grower (that is, if his cock changes size between limp and hard. Some guys have the same size regardless of arousal, they're usually called 'showers'). Then you have the 'half-hard' stage, in which the arousal continues its course and blood begins to flow into the penis. Here is when the guy starts to get slightly stiff and his dick starts to grow. If the stimulus isn't strong enough, the growth might stop here. If a guy catches sight of a nice ass, for example, maybe it won't get him fully hard (depends on his personal tastes), but it might be enough to get his blood flowing. Usually the cock remains like this for a few moments even after the arousing stimulus has passed, it doesn't immediately go back to limp (assuming he doesn't see something horrifying that completely kills his mood, of course). It's like his cock is saying "hey, are you SURE you don't want to keep thinking about that ass? I already have all this blood here, it would be a shame to send it back to the body..."
Some guys have different stages of hardness, and whether all or some of them should be called "fully" hard is a matter of debate. What they all have in common is that a guy can orgasm in this state. If a guy is jerking off, for example, to relieve stress or because he's used to it or because his body demands release, he might not become 100% hard. He might only reach 90% of his potential, but it's still enough to climax. It's like a chore, the guy's not really into it. He gets hard enough to do his job, comes, and then he goes back to limp very fast (in a minute or less). Now, if the guy is actually interested and he's very aroused, he might reach his peak and become as hard as he can get. The main difference between these is basically the intensity of the orgasm and the volume of cum. In the first case, the guy may have a quick orgasm and shoot a small load, maybe a couple of shots. In the latter, the guy may have a longer, 'better' orgasm, and his ejaculation might be a little or a lot more copious. Oh, and in the latter case, the cock usually stays hard for a long time after climaxing (from a couple of minutes to remaining hard enough to go at it again once the refractory period is finished). Of course, some guys have more than these stages. Maybe a guy gets 80% hard when he's jerking off every day, but he can get 90% hard when he's getting laid, and 100% hard when his girlfriend/boyfriend has him tied down and spanks him with gusto; or he engages in his favorite fetish. It varies.
And as a closing advice: watch porn. No, seriously. The best way to familiarize yourselves with a penis is by looking at it so often and from such different angles that you can practically draw it with your eyes closed. Look at the different shapes they come in, how they change color depending on how hard they are, how most guys will start dribbling precome if they're REALLY aroused and they're not getting any. It doesn't need to be video, of course. Pictures/manga/etc work just fine, too. The key is to get as familiar with it as you can.
I think that's all, hope this helps iron out some leftover details on the matter.
